Hey kids!

Off I go. Flying out early tomorrow. Then boarding the Costa
Mediterranea. Hey Gadget - email me at jeffcoud at mac dot com, since
you are sailing tomorrow too! Cruising Italian-style once again,
although, I'm going to do a "Diana Ball" and low carb it this cruise,
and do lots of active sports (snorkeling and kayaking primary), possibly
get a henna tatoo, and drink heavily, in that order. Lol.... Wish
y'all were going, but I'll see you on the Solstice right?? Hold my room
George! I'm thinking inside maybe. I'll take my italian lessons this
time and learn a few new words. Off I go to the Costa Med....3rd time!!!

Nice thing about low carb dieting, drink all the alcohol you want. No
mixed drinks though(unless you use diet soda), and no beer.

You should probably read up on Low Carb diets, Marsha. NET calories are
important not total calories. You may be correct that some may not be
able to drink all THEY WANT, but damn near it I bet.

Lost 27 pounds in 4 months. All the low carb food and alcohol "I"
wanted. Bad cholesterol is way down(doc says EXCELLENT) Heart rate is
great, all blood tests came back great. Feel better than I have in years.
Argue all you want about it, but it works IF YOU DO IT CORRECTLY AND

I have read up on low-carb diets, along with every other diet. You
cannot maintain or lose weight if intake exceeds output. Period.

Jeff must be having a blast right about now. I can't wait to hear how
eating low carb and drinking heavily works for him, LOL. As Marsha
correctly noted, alcohol is taboo on the version of the low carb diet
I tried one cruise (with great success).

Low carb is a very good way to eat, especially if you are diabetic. I
try to always eat that way, because it gives me so much energy. No junk
food and no carb crashes to make you feel sluggish. You can
occasionally have <some> alcohol, but it's not recommended.

My DH is a diabetic and is allowed to have a drink when he wants to, as
long as it isn't a sweet drink. Alcohol lowers the blood sugar and as
long as you don't become an alcoholic, no problem.

No one said it didn't have carbs. It does, however, have lots of empty
calories. A person can eat nothing but foods with no carbs and they
will still gain weight if they don't burn off more calories than they
take in. It's that simple.

Any plan, preferably well-balanced, in which you take in less calories
than you expend will work if you stick to it.

Marsha, since you've done your research then you know your body burns
off calories at different orders, and different rates in your body.
Meaning that sugar, fat, and carbohydrate based caloric values are burn
off in different orders.
If you cut way back on pure carbs and sugars, fat calories get burned
off sooner. Also low carb diets increase your metabolism greatly which
further enhances the caloric burn rate.(read up on ketosis)

You are correct that if you sit on your ass and do nothing then calories
don't get burned off very fast, and what you take in gets stored. On the
other hand if you are even reasonably active and you stop taking in high
carbohydrate foods, you will burn fat off.(once you go into ketosis)

Alcohol definitely slows you metabolism, but because it contains no
carbohydrates it is burned from your system more quickly.

You have to burn the calories that you take in, no question, but I can't
take in more calories drinking than I burn, not and stay conscious that
is. I weighed my self yesterday and I have lost 30# in 4.5 months. I
drink PURE no carb alcohol drinks 3-4 days a week and occasionally 4-5 a
day if there is a party going on. Except for the 1st 2 weeks of the diet
I changed nothing in my alcohol intake.

I don't contest the calories in versus the calories out, but I do
contest the math.

Let the dieter beware, do your own research and make up your own mind.

Your message was posted on the 22nd, which was our sailing date.

I got home early this morning and read what became a list of diet
reccommendations.

I should have followed my own diet as this cruise put a few pounds on
top of the few that I gained on the CostaFortuna earlier this month.

Sorry we didn't connect as the party was great.

Did you get rained on in Roatan?
We were picked up and shown the new cruise termial site on the other
side of the island, as well as places I've never seen in Roatan.

How did you make out in Grand Cayman?
After over 100 port calls and resort stays there the port where we were
diverted was a new one for me. We got back on the ship before the rain.

Stefano kept the spirit up and the crew show as well as the Roman night
were perfect. I was sprised the the old man who told his story in
French at the Roman night was not sent to the lions, He sat at the
table next to mine for dinner and when he discribed his "story telling"
I was going to tell him not to do it, but the crowd liked his
perseverance.

I thought that the ship was in great shape and had a tour with the
Services and Hotel Directors who are doing a great job.

I was suprised that no one seemed to know anything about the woman who
jumped off the Mediterranea a couple of weeks ago on the first night of
her cruise after an argument. Perhaps they were told not to talk about
this unfortunate incident.

All-in-all, I still like the Mediterranea and Atlantica layout better
than most other Costa Ships. Naturally, this being Easter week gave the
ship a "family flavor" unlike the Fortuna which was more like the
beaches of St Tropez with topless beauties abounding all over.

The math doesn't really matter. There would be no reason for a
no-carb diet if the goal wasn't losing weight.

But a plan that avoids carbs where you just concentrate on protein and
fat isn't well balanced. And of course the problem is with sticking
to it for any length of time. If it wasn't there would be no fat
people.

Congratulations on your weight loss. I do not have anything against
low-carb diets, as I follow one myself, but you stated he could have all
the drinks he wanted, which may not be true if he wants a whole bunch of
alcohol. Vodka has 100 calories in 1.5 oz. If I *want* 10 drinks,
that's 1,000 calories. If I've already eaten my normal maintenance
amount of 1500 calories for the day, that adds up to 2500. If I keep
taking in that amount and don't change my exercise patterns, I will gain
weight. Alcohol also burns before fat calories, so if you're trying to
lose fat while drinking too much, it isn't going to work. That's the
only point I'm trying to make.

I understand your point but the calorie formulas you state don't hold
true for low carb dieting. The daily allowance of 1500 calorie numbers
are only accurate if you are on a high carb diet.

But you already know that.

Hey Gadget! Glad to hear you had a good time. With the not so good
weather several days I ended up doing a lot of reading and relaxing, spa
stuff. I really do like the layout of the Med as well....the pool decks
and deck 2 are very well designed for strolling around! Didn't even get
off the ship in Roatan with the weather. Didn't feel like dodging the
rain all day, which is a shame, but I'm sure I'll get back there again.
Very interesting that they are building a proper dock there. Ended up
just going to Seven Mile in Cayman with some women from my dining room
table. Was a reasonably good day and I loved the heavy surf! Took a
LONG time to get back on the tender though, which was a drag, of course,
we were on the Carnival tender line for a while and didn't know it. A
bit of chaos there. Had wanted to go to Rum Point but none of the taxis
would take us there. Didn't do much in Coz...wandered around a bit.
Was feeling less adventurous this time. Did get to talk to the singing
twins a bunch and they talked about the "jumper"...sounded like such a
horrible week actually and really put a damper on everyone's spirits
apparently. The ship definitely had a "family" feel with lots of kids
and teens. Seemed like enough for little kids to do but not enough for
200 teens, but they were well behaved and I didn't see too many drunk
ones, lol...although there was a teen party the last night a few cabins
down from me but I don't think it lasted long. Had a great time in the
disco several nights and I was glad they set up a teen disco somewhere
else! That was probably smart. I always like toga night! I was glad
the last few days were sunny so I just worked on my tan primarily!
Didn't gain much weight since I hit the gym twice a day, lol...

Oh yeah! Wasn't that fun!? I was just leaving my cabin to go to
dinner, so I went down to the dining room to make sure my ladies were ok
and to hang out there....I guess some folks were really freaked out by
it, but I thought, what the heck I'm sure they'll get it fixed soon
enough. We were trying to decide if we were going to sing "Nearer My
God To Thee" or "The Morning After" from the Poseiden Adventure.
Fortunately it didn't come to that of course. We were thinking "cold
soups" and stuff for dinner, and lots of wine, lol....but all turned out
well.

First of all, it's low carb, not no carb. And there is a huge reason
why many normal-weight people eat low carb - to help control diabetes.

Any diet will work for anyone, as long as you continue to follow, which

Low carb doesn't just focus on protein and fat. You get most of your
carbs from vegetables. You still have to watch calories, just as you do
with any other plan. The whole point of low carb is to switch your body
to burning fat first (good fats) instead of carbs. You also don't get
that big swing in glucose that makes you hungry shortly after eating
junk food with a bunch of empty carbs, like a doughnut or a bagel. I'm
getting hungry :-)

That is an odd thing about the low carb diet I am on, I don't get hungry
between meals, and sometimes, don't even feel like finishing meals.

Incidently, some confuse low carb with NO carb. This isn't directed at
you Marsha.
The Atkins diet in the maintenace phase looks no different than many
healthy diet menus.

Sure now ya tell me! There's a Marriott there right? I figured we

You never asked. Done the Spots Bay mess too. That is when the seas are
rough. Better than skipping Cayman completely. Had that happen too. By

If you're talking about the no-carb comment, I'm glad it isn't directed
at me, because Rosalie is the one who said that :-). Some people also
think low carb means high fat. Atkins had the right idea, but I believe
South Beach is a bit better. Not getting hungry between meals is the
beauty of a low-carb plan. I lost my desire for sweets and junk food
within a couple days.

mine I spoke with that day said his (some time ago) turned into a big
blob in like 2 days! So I was a bit hesitant!!!! It was an odd cruise,
very relaxed, did almost nothing active and read books and sleeped (and
sampled many of the wines of Italy, lol.....)

Oh I had no problem with the decision at all....the seas were clearly
rough! Which I like swimming in but other folks were a bit afraid to go
in the water at 7 Mile. The tender operation though left a whole lot to
be desired! It was a disorganized mess! I did hang out with some
entertainment staff on line though and we yucked it up which was fun.

That is wonderful Clay, I am so proud of you! I have been living LaVita
Low Carb for 7 months, and I have been able to lose a few pounds. I
stayed on the diet through 3 cruises, a wedding anniversary, birthdays,
Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Valentine's Day, without getting
off the diet. I was so proud of mysself, then Easter came along. LOL
We made cookies and brownies to take to church, and I was decorating the
platters with jelly beans, and I broke my diet. I ate a handful of
jelly beans <blech>, and I was so sick, I thought I was going to hurl.
And I don't even like jelly beans! LOL

Congrats Clay, and good luck losing your last 7 pounds.

As I understand it Aqua class rooms have a specialty restaurant that is
free for them, but extra cost for the rest of the passenngers. Also Aqua
class gets first shot at reservations there.

So go and email George with all your questions. He does email very well,
so no more excuses.

We had concierge class on the Infinity and loved their room service
breakfasts. For the Solstice we didn't want to spring for the extra $$$
for concierge class.

My husband and daughter were on something called the Sugar Busters
diet. My husband had bacon for breakfast, and a low carb lunch and a
regular dinner with at least two vegetables. He did lose weight, but
he also had a heart attack. I don't really think that the two things
are related.

At home, if I don't eat breakfast at all, I don't really get hungry
until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. If I eat breakfast (no matter what I
have), I'm hungry again before lunch. I don't know why this is. We
have a regular dinner with at least two vegetables and one fruit in
addition to some kind of meat (usually actually is chicken or fish)
and eat about 6.

I rarely eat doughnuts. If I want to eat in the morning, I often have
a handful of nuts. I will, if they are available, eat a plain bagel
for breakfast but I do not go out and buy them, so that's only when
traveling. Or sometimes I will eat a banana

It just seems like everyone (menu writers etc) act like carbs are
evil, and I know that vegetables and fruits are basically carbs and
are necessary.

Many vegetarians I know are thin. Can vegetarians eat low carb?

When DH was first dx with diabetes, he was told to eliminate all white
flour, to follow a low carb diet and of course watch how much sugar he ate.

On a low carb diet you can eat many different vegetables, that isn't a
problem. Most fruit is very high in sugar, but grapes and berries work
very well on a low carb and low sugar diet.

Very true Sue.

Rosalie, the thing most people don't realize is that a low carb diet
isn't virtually no carbs it just LOWER than most people eat. I eat all
kinds of vegetables and fruit on the maintenance phase of the the diet.
The maintenance diet I'm on is has about 60-80 grams of carbohydrates,
which means I can't eat much bread, pasta, and pizza. If you cut out
processed flours, and sugars and you are almost on a low carb diet.
Also, the more fiber in your diet, the more carbs you can eat without
impact.

I eat high fiber breads, and cereals. Sugar free candies and drinks for
snacks.

I didn't see the singing twins of stage, and that was good enough for
me!

In Roatan Carnival is building a cruise terminal in a very attractive
area with shops, restaurants, pool and beach.

Royal Caribbean is building the terminal where we docked, so Roatan will
be able to handle many ships.

Are they all crazy? Roatan calls burn more fuel in this time of fuel
surcharges you would think that they would be trying to develop closer
ports to the US and drop 7 day cruises to 3 ports to save fuel and
speed.

Roatan is very nice for diving and unlike the mainland of Honduras
Roatan is safe, but not cheap. They are getting some of the old Costa
Maya traffic until it's rebuilt this summer.

I thought that my cabin was going to be loud, as it was on the first
day, but no problem as we were right at the aft of the ship. Where was
your cabin?

It's a shame that Costa and MSC keep there largest ships in Europe all
year as they have some interesting amenities.

We would all like to see a Dynasty-like hair-pulling fight up in the

Now I can not claim any spectacular weight loss stories cause overall I only
lost about 35 pounds. But over the years I have tried just about very diet, fad
or serious, or I have watched someone one of those diets, and guess what.
Usually they don't work over the long term and sometimes not even the short term

So here we go, if it works for you then continue what you are doing. In my case
I just decided that it would be a combination of less in and more out. Very
simple. I still eat fried chicken, cheese, ice cream, etc but just not as often
and in smaller amounts. On the other side of the equation I try to take a long
walk everyday and I take every little chance to increase my physical exertion no
matter what I am doing.

And the best part of my approach is that it costs me nothing. In fact my grocery
bill is about a third of what it was a few years ago. About the only processed
foods you will find here is a box of Ritz crackers. There is a box of instant
mashed potatoes for emergency use but that is about it. I like to take leftovers
and make a soup and sometimes I will use a little of the instant mashed potatoes
as a thickner. Much better than using flour.

On a Cruise I don't worry about what I am eating, just how much.In the buffet I
don't have to have a glob of everything just because it is there. A taste is
sufficient.

Last but not least, two glasses of Red Wine every day after 6:00 pm. It really
helps, both mentally and physically.

Very interesting about all the terminals coming to Roatan. I do like
it there, very primitive in certain ways. I was looking at one

Belize! Am seriously thinking either the GGC 2009 or a back to back on
the Serena maybe. Was your cabin all the way aft? I was pretty close

You mean you would rather sail on Costa than with all your friends???

Seriously, it would be great if your folks could join the fun.

Jeff,

Don't they have something like that on Atlantis cruises? I haven't been
yet, it seems like it could happen given enough queens and cocktails. ;-)

I dunno, I wonder. I think something like that could easily be staged
though. Never heard much about the Cirque du Soleil stuff on Celebrity
either...anyone out there ever seen it??

Thanks Jeff

I forgot about the Serena.

I wish that performers on cruise ships could just do what they do best.

I'll never understand why a singer has to be a comedian, juggler,
musician and puppeteer, just to fill time. The best acts I've seen are
those who don't have a "cruise ship act" and simply do the thing that
they can do best, like singers only singing, comedians only telling
jokes, and magicians making magic. When the Twins were singing Italian
songs, seriously they did well. But when they joke about it they appear
to be making excuses for their singing,

I've seen Presley from the Platters for years and he always gets his
best applause when he sings Platters songs.

Why he has to make the audience suffer through all the other songs and
jokes is beyond me.

Cruise ships seem to be unique in their demand fr performers to
"shmoose" the crowd in going down into the audience, or asking the
audience memebers to come on stage and make fools out of them. But, I
guess that's the only way you can get a 45 minute show out of a 15
minute act!

I should have said FORGET ABOUT THE SERENA!

The only Costa ship in Florida for 08/09 season will be the Fortuna from
the end of December to March.

I guess the cruise lines like those euros more than our $.

Don't be suprised if all the cruises in the Med this year will be
discounted, while the few ships left in the Caribbean go out full.

The beaches in the Med this summer will make Coney Island look good!
