then go to your Seapass card and it will be swiped before entering
show to see if you have a reservation. IF you do not then you will go

Sue, thank you so much for all this information.
There is so much to do on the Oasis, we are going to have to do a lot of
planing ahead of time. I am not crazy about the idea of getting tickets
for shows 3 months ahead, most likely if you don't it will be hard to
get into the shows.

We have been invited to be on the Oasis on November 20-22 for one of the
intro cruises to nowhere. I hardly ever do any of these two-nighters
because getting to the ship is too expensive and a PITA for just a two night
cruise, but if things work out, we are planning on making this one.
There are few times when a new ship comes out that changes or revitalizes
the entire industry and I think the Oasis will be one of them. I haven't
seen this much anticipation and advance sales since the Grand Princess was
introduced.

I was on the Jewel OTS June '08 and the Capt was doing his talk. He
said he thought that the Oasis would have the same impact on cruising as
the 747 did on flying. It would require a major rethinking of the entire
industry from ports (or airports) to both ends of the boarding, to
safety issues, to (in the case of the cruise industry) such things as
finding enough things for people to do at the ports.
I did not think at the time (nor do I now) that this was just Corp.

HEY George,
I go on a few days after you do... Then on to the Viking Cruise the
next weekend for the VIking Group Cruise, So need the 5 days to have
some down time after the 2 night Oasis. She will be something and will
change the Cruising World, But will it be for the better? or water it
down more? I do feel though how everyone was downing NCL for their PAY
venues that with this ship it is gonna not only cost you bigger bucks
to get on the ship but once on its going to be a cash Cow... I do not
think this class of ship will be for everyone as its size is emense I
hope I can walk the whole ship! But its a novelty a incredible marvel
and lots to do.... YEs things that are FREE but if you bring a kid its
gonna be like going to the Shore in Wildwood. Bring your Bank
account!

On these familiarization cruises, particularly for a new class of
ship, do you feel the TA's have a better passenger experience or a
more difficult one than a regular customer would have 6 months
later? For instance, I could argue that the line would have more
staff present, serve better food and pay more attention to detail
than after the ship is broken in. OTOH, I can also see these
cruises like you and Becca are going on to be fraught with the
"devil in the details," where the shipboard personnel are learning
their ship.
What's been your experience and what's the experience of the other
TA's?

Like I said, I don't usually go on these but here are some general opinions
and observations from the ones I have been on....
On a new ship, the vast majority of the crew are experienced people
transferred from other ships. It is easier for the entire fleet to absorb a
few new crew members over a few weeks to replace the experienced people who
are transferred than to train an entire ship of new employees. New ships
are usually considered plum assignments so you get some very senior people
on them.
Service crew and staff are generally on the ship a while before the first
paying customer hits the gangway.
I never noticed that there were extra crew members. Space is money on a
cruise ship... it isn't like they have extra room for extra crew. AFAIK,
they sail with the same full compliment of crew that the ships sails with
when full.
Food is pretty much the same except for TA cruises, the shrimp are bigger.
The intro cruises give the kitchen and dining staff practice at producing
the set menus that they will be serving the paying guest... they need the
practice. Some special banquets or buffets may pop up (again... big shrimp)
during a TA cruise, but the dining is pretty much the same as they paying
customers get.
One huge difference... the drinks are free. To me, no big deal as I don't
drink much one way or the other. But you would be amazed at eh number of
people who get soused as quickly as possible and stay that way. Sure is a
good way to impress the people at XXX Cruise Line that you are a
professional.
Another difference is that tips are supposed to be paid by the cruise line.
I've asked some cruise members and they tell me that yes, they do get a per
diem from the line but it isn't as much as they would get from the paying
customers. I usually tip these people anyway.
In general, these two day intro cruises are a lot of fun and if you are
smart, you can learn a lot from the seminars and shows.

engineers, mechanics and those types to keep on eye on those kind of
parts. I thought it was rather dumb that the FAA required an airline
mechanic be on board every new airliner until they had a certain number
of hours in the air. I mean what was he gonna do, walk out on the wing
and fix the engines (G). Same general idea, I would guess.

I'd never heard that, Kurt. Is it a current requirement, or one
from the past? In the days of the big piston-engine planes, I
recall seeing old photos and movies about passageways into the
wing and nacelle for just that purpose. Nowadays, I doubt if a
mechanic could even gain access to the luggage compartment.

I would agree with George that the service is usually first rate, but
the bar service can be dodgy due to heavy demand.
I do recall being on the Oostersdam inaugural and seeing Louis the XII
on the bar menu I asked and the bar tender grinned and said , you can
have Louis 7th they took my XIII away. We did find XO in the Pinnacle
Grill and the barthender poured a very closely guarded shot. After he
left the relief guy took the bottle and hit us with a free flow shot.
(Guess who was responsbilefor that bar's inventory!)
But really as far as crew goes the rest of the fllet usualy suffers
the loss rather than the new ship struggle. that said there is
sometimes confusion over where things are on the new ship as the crew
on the inaugurals is learnging to work together under hgih stress.

We were flying ATA to Las Vegas when they were still in business and
were receiving their new jets. Had to be late 90s. Got talking to the
guy in the seat next to me and he mentioned he was a mechanic for the
Airline deadheading because the FAA required it.
Just one the many weird things about the FAA I ran across over the
years. And don't EVEN get me started on the medical kit requirements
(g).

hahahaha they do not put out the Mountains like they used to! and I
can see why! SOMETIMES some of these TA's are a embarassment... Some
are pretend TA's too... Others are from the Media and other walks of
life that contribute to the production or the Selling/Telling of a new
ship. usually NO kids are onboard. Free sodas etc too they use to hav
a stocked Fridge but they took that away....
on the OAsis it will be hard to do and see it all in 2 dAYS.
But I would not say ours is better then paying folks just different
usually bettter entertainment, And we get to see all the room Types I
love that...and the Free Soda/Drinks.
I am not a big drinker either so maybe 2 or 3 per day... maybe none
depends on my mood!
the Menu though is similar but not as many choices for a TA cruise.
I am looking foreward to it
