My wife and I and another couple are going to be in St Thomas and St Maarten
next month via the Carribean Princess. Does anyone here wish to share any
interesting ideas for things to do in these two ports of call? We're not
interested in any of the shore excursions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA
Spike

If you don't like any of the shore excursions, then there's not much I
can suggest. We rented a car in St. Maartin. And in St. Thomas,
there's always shopping.

Spike,

Instead of simply trying describe shore excursions, presented here are some
photo albums of things we actually did while in both St. Thomas and St.
Maarten. Since St. John is so close to St. Thomas, and available as a shore
excursion, we have included that as well. The second album of St. Maarten is
also included here, and even though taken way back when with a lesser
quality camera, does present some different views.

We hope you enjoy our albums, after all, a picture is worth a thousand
words.

What type of things would you be interested in? Beaches, shopping,
scenic views etc.

My favorite thing in St. Maarten was doing the America Cup Regatta/Race (I
did it 3 times with different people). See link below. While you can save
some by booking it yourself, the saving isn't that much and I think you're
better off booking it through the ship. It is very popular (and not cheap).

Both great ports .If on your own in St Thomas .You could rent a
jeep .We done it menny times .I would book it online and and pick it
up early and ride around the island ,stop and shop some then head back
to the ship and park it right there .And go back to the ship for
lunch .Then in the afternoon we would get back in the jeep and head to
Magens bay for a few hours !! Then just drop the jeep off in the lot
if the place was closed !!

In St Maarten everything is almost by the ship .Shopping and a great
beach !! If you on your own .Great port .

A few weeks ago we were in St. Thomas with two of the grand-children.
We had promised to take them to Magens Bay.

Going ashore at Crown Bay, we found that the local taxis (buses) were
charging $16 one way per person to the Bay, and it was $4.00 admission to
the park.

$64 one way for 4 people, plus $16 to get in the park, comes to $144
altogether, which is a fair chunk of change just to go to the beach.

That is still only $36 per person.
The shore excursion to Megan's bay is $34 on Princess.

Better book the excursion and save the $2 each plus be guaranteed the ship
will wait for you in case the bus is late getting back.

On one excursion in 2006 our bus encountered a tanker truck that turned
over. We got back to the ship an hour after sailing time. Because we were on
a Princess excursion the ship waited. They don't wait if you are late
getting back if you are not on an excursion.

The charge is pre-set (they should be able to show you the price list)
and while it is per person, usually it is less per person as there are
more people.

So what would it have been on an excursion?

When we did it, we found that we saved a couple of dollars each to go
to Coral World over what the ship excursion would have cost. But it's
not much difference really, either way IME
