Am I the only one who always meets everyone who paid a fraction of the
price for a last minute booking?

Just about every cruise I am on, someone tells us that they booked the
week before the cruise and got:

*a 50% discount
*upgrade to a balcony or Suite from an inside
*on board credit of a $100 or more

Or a combination of the above.

Usually these people are not big time repeat passengers of the cruise
line they booked or know much about cruises. Sometimes these braggers
are first timer's and they think that everyone got the same deal. They
all say they found the deal on the internet, but don't remember the
site.

On Florida sailings I am also bombarded by passengers who live up North
asking me if locals just go to the port on the sailing day, and play
"let's make a deal".

Perhaps I am missing the boat, as sailings that are half empty two week
before departure are always full when the ship leaves the port.

Where are all these deals? and how long before the cruise are they
available.

It would make sense for the highest level of loyalty club member
retirees living near a port to be notified shortly before the cruise for
a significant discount, but when we were offered a free cruise for this
month we already had another cruise booked and paid for.

There has been a lot of this... especially this Fall. Carnival has what
they call "Pack and Go" fares that change weekly for last minute
purchases but I am seeing fewer of them going into January than there
were in December which is traditionally a very slow month.

Princess makes the best use of Past Passenger data bases (IMO) when it
comes to offering good last minute deals. There was one last week for a
7 night Southern Caribbean cruise for $299 inside. Problem is that the
ad came out 5 days before sail date and airfare to SJU was either
non-existent or incredibly expensive. (FWIW - that was the lowest 7
night fare I have seen this year)

Cruise lines use a "yield management" software system that makes sure
that the ships go out full. They do that by adjusting prices based on
how many cabins are left and how many days before sailing there are.
There really isn't anything as a ship being only "half full" a few weeks
before sail date.

Pricing can change instantly based on sales. I have had times when I
booked a cabin in the morning at one fare and by the afternoon, that
fare had gone up. Last week I booked an Alaska cruise and three days
later, that fare went down $150 pp (I did get the new lower fare for the
customer). You just never know.

One other thought..... a couple of the cruise lines (Royal Caribbean and
Celebrity) are now trying a model where they accept less than 100%
capacity rather than lower fares at the last minute. This is an
off-shoot of their experience with the Solstice and the Oasis of the
Seas. It seems to be working so far as htey are holding their per-diems
higher than what used to be considered normal. It will take a few
quarters to see if this has an effect on the bottom line.

There is also an old saying about pricing.... "In any conversation on a
ship about cruise fares, the person with the lowest fare is always the
person who speaks last." <vbg>

Not that I would ever do it, but I also know some folk who have a
ball on a ship's elevator discussing with a "friend," just how
cheaply they got their cabin. "Yup, we got the same deal that you
did, John. They called us 3 weeks ago and offered the balcony
cabin for $175 per person for the 7-day. At that price, we
thought it would be cheaper going on the ZZZ this week than
staying home and eating at Denny's."

Another favorite is, "When Princess called 2 days before we left,
I almost didn't take the phone call I was so worried that the
cruise had been cancelled. Instead, they called to tell us about
the price reduction and offered the $500 per cabin credit or a
free cruise."

All travel agents have access to these last minute rates (when they are
available). The idea is to sell the cabins as quickly as possible... so
you make them available to as many outlets as possible.

Our June cruise to Alaska just went down almost $700 for the 2 of us.
My travel agent told me to watch the price on the Princess web site and
if I notice a reduction, let her know. She called Princess and our
price went down even more than the price on the web site. Would the
same thing happen if there was a last minute reduction, or is that a
whole other thing?

We had a group on Princess to Alaska last May and some cabins went down
$1000. It does happen.

Some of the last minute fares can be applied to established bookings.
Many times, the promoted fare will say "good for new, individual
bookings only" so there is no one rule that will cover all cases.

Your best tool in these cases is a good travel agent... but you already
found that out!

I just got off my 48th cruise and have never asked anyone how much they paid
for their cruise.
1. It's none of my business
2. They probably wouldn't tell me the truth if I did. Those who do discuss
it amongst themselves usually say that they got the best deal anyway.

Often people who tell you about the low fare don't include the taxes.

When people ask me what I paid and brag about a great last minute deal
I don't say anything about what I paid but when they have insisted on
telling me what their deal was it was either the same fare or more than
I paid.

There was a rumor on the Norwegian Gen transatlantic that some people
had gotten last minute pricing of $200/pp. That was for travel industry
employees only. I didn't talk to anyone who had actually gotten that
fare.

Is pricing for travel agents ordinarily really good?, or does it just
vary all over?

BTW, people on cruise critic were watching the fares and cabin
availability, and very few cabins could have been available at the rate.

Last minute pricing works best if there is no air required. Instead of
paying $699 for the cruise and $229 for air, you pay $299 for the cruise,
and $1000 for the air ticket. And a last minute flight to Europe probably
is a lot more than that. And doubtful you save much with a one way. The
only time we saw much savings with a one way was through Cunard (they
probably bought round trip tickets and split them between passengers on
consecutive sailings).

No. TA pricing used to be a good deal but now 1) very few sailings are
available 2) they are usually last minute and airfare is prohibitive and
3) the fares are often as high or higher than many promotional fares.
In addition, TA rates exclude things like shareholder benefits, onboard
credits, etc.

There are some good TA offers out there once in a while, but it is
nothing like it used to be years ago.

BUT - if you sell enough of a certain cruise line, that line may offer
select agents freebies or inaugural cruises, that kind of thing.

We agents rarely get them sometimes there is $50 a day plus tax, the
$200 ones are if your doing a Seminar at sea and they are few and far
this is through our DSM's it is actually paying the grats and taxes-
But we should get those it is a week of learning onboard and being
able to come back and tell all of you. kinda like george and I going
on the Oasis Someone else went too and I forgot, But to be honest with
you If you book Oasis you better book with a agent that went on
there, this is needed for this ship because there is alot of different
staterooms and different people need different things and this is the
one ship that you could sell to someone and they get their room and
not be happy- YOU NEED TO KNOW the CLIENT. and to book on your own is
a gamble because there is alot of fluff and sugar coat out there, what
looks so much fun on paper could be a disaster of a room!

Carnival also has a pricing for early bookings non refundable deposit
but if the prie goes down they will adjust this is the only way
carnival adjusts.
There are different pricing points Florida Residents get theirs
Certain states may be on a res special, Sr rates etc. some are better
then others. its just a catch 22 many times....

I just got back from the Ruby Princess and met lots of passengers who
paid $50 or less per day for balconies, outside and some inside cabins.

The very low prices were all found on internet sites at the last minute.

Many of the pan were cruising back-to-back and some
back-to-back-to-back.

It made me happy to learn that I'm not the only
real frequent cruiser around but I as a bit envious of their low last
minute rates!

When I asked for the name of the internet source of the rates most were
hesitant to reveal
it as they jealously want to protect these deals for themselves as they
sell-out immediately after the e-mail go out.

I had a great time anyway.

Then how would you know they really paid $50 less per day than you? You
can't trust what they say just on say so.

As far as an internet source for last minute Princess deals by e-mail
the source I know of is Princess itself. I got two from Princess a
month. The last one was on November 23 for a ten day Panama Canal
cruise on December 10 with insides starting from $599 a person to
balconies for $895 a person. It is no secret. Just log onto the
Princess web site. If you are not registered, register. Go to Captains
Circle and click on the Standby Program. It will ask you to check on
the ports and the notice you need in advance. Submit that and you
should start getting last minute Princess deals out of the ports you
select.

I got an e-mail from Celebrity last night with last minute deals that
have to be booked today. All you have to do is sign up with Celebrity
for their e-mails. Even without the e-mail call any travel agent. They
get the list of Tuesday deals too. For example one deal is sailing date
January 4 on the Century is as low as $219 per person for an inside
cabin. That is a five day RT. from Miami. Another is a seven day
sailing on the Summit for either Jan 16 starting at $399 per person
inside RT from San Juan. Sign up for e-mails with the cruise lines and
you will get e-mails with last minute pricing.

I saw those 3 and 4 day cruises on the Ruby advertised for $50 a day on
the Princess site. They did not include taxes and fees It is rare when
Princess has shorter than 7 day cruises and they all seem to be sold at
bargain prices. The Ruby normaly is doing 10 day cruises at that time
and did the 2 short ones so that they could do a Holiday cruise of 10
days. I don't think most Princess customers are interested in short
cruises. It is a very different type of cruise than the longer cruises.
Carnival and RCL do many of those.

Sorry but it was 2 three day cruises.

I too thought the cruise would be full of first time Princess guests,
but was surprised to see mostly Captain's Circle members who were try to
get 2 cruise credits in 6 days for their next level of the club. Some
were sailing the 3 day
cruise before their 10 or 14 day cruise over the holiday so they could
qualify for the Elite laundry benefits on the longer cruise.

Many of the passengers were sailing back to back with Princess or
another cruise line after this cruise.

These discounted cruises are not just for people on low budgets as many
of the passengers were well traveled and well heeled.

Unfortunately, there was no Captain's Circle event or Elite lunch on
these short cruises and no recognition of the ,most traveled passenger.

Matt Groening already covered this, Binky.

Bullshit. What about life before birth? Ova and sperm develop from
stem cells that are the direct result of divisions of the organism's
origin, a fertilized ovum. That ovum is the result of a fusion of an
ovum and a sperm, which are the direct results of... &etc. all the way
back to Mitochondrial Eve.

There is no "when does life begin".

I sleep on flannel sheets.

I don't drink... wine.

I watch both PBS and wrestling. Not at the same time, but still.

IWPTA "live afterbirth". I'm trying desperately not to visualize a
placenta crawling away from the mother and baby, and failing. Yeuch.

But how did they taste? Also, crunchy or not-crunchy? The world awaits

Sadly, Mr. Happy is not equipped with taste buds, and the ones I do
have were not utilized. From the clacking noises made when I dropped
the rock and the flakes onto the microscope sample holder thingy I'm
gonna guess they're crunchy, but again I didn't actually test them for
that.

I sent the damnthings to The Lab for appropriate tortur^H^Hanalysis.
Maybe they'll test them for such things.

Different people have different goals. I can't imagine jumping through

And I like getting free things by points and memberships. My wife, my
daughter and I all went to Hawaii first class this fall and my wife
and I had 13 out of 20 hotel nights there free on awards.

Carnival's Super Saver fares are supposed to be the guaranteed lowest.
If you're willing to book WTF out with a nonrefundable deposit.

RCI's "Sales Event" tomorrow has Navigator of the Seas 4 night OV for
$249 on the 12st and $279 on the 30th. But these rooms will vanish in
nothing flat. If you can get to Miami cheaply, that is.

OTOH, I've been the lowest fare from time to time. Usually, though,
folks tend to lie in either direction. Either they claim to have paid
more ("i'm so fracking rich I don't care") or they don't want to be
seen as a gulible yokel who paid too much (unlike all the liars at the
table who actually paid more).

I almost NEVER see resident rates for TX/OK/LA out of Galveston. But
I just had one for the Freedom of the Seas. And TN rates for the
Voyager out of Galveston.

The idea of showing up at the pier and getting a cheap rate
disappeared on 9/12/2001. TSA wants all your information 3 days in
advance. Heck, you can barely do that at the airport without finding
out which "inspector" has the biggest hands. :-)
