DETROIT (AP) -- A Northwest Airlines flight from Detroit to Allentown,
Pa., was diverted to Cleveland today after a passenger was stung by
a scorpion.
Flight 3006, operated by Mesaba Airlines, left Detroit Metropolitan Airport
at 10:35 a.m. and was about midway through its journey when a man felt
a bite on his hand, Mesaba spokeswoman Shirley Doering said.
“He looked down and identified it as a scorpion,” she said. “I don’t
know
who killed it, but either the passenger or a crew member killed it.”
The 40-year-old man did not want to divert the flight, but the crew decided
it would be safer to land at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, Doering
said.
The man was taken to Southwest General Health Center in Cleveland and
was released later in the day, nursing supervisor Becky Mowry said.
The other passengers were put on different flights, and the plane was sent
back to Detroit to be fumigated, said Kate Hubben, a spokeswoman for
Hopkins Airport.
Officials could not immediately identify what kind of scorpion it was.
“Our guess is that it probably got into a passenger’s carry-on luggage who
was coming from the southwest, Mexico or the Caribbean,” Doering said.
“To my knowledge, it’s never happened at Mesaba, but it’s not
uncommon.”

During my first trip to Australia, met a pom cyclist who had been stung by
scorpion while sleeping on the ground (no tent). He showed his finger and it
was just swollen. He continued cycling the next day as if nothing had happened.
But when I first did encounter a scorpion (walked between my feet), I froze
and was quite concerned...
I did crush a big one with my front wheel once though.
But never encountered them or snakes on a plane.

I'd almost have to discount this story as a parody, but it *is* NW,
after all....
Despite spending some time in New Mexico, I never have seen a scorpion
-- and I'd like to keep it that way.

Scorps ain't insects---they're arachnids (like spiders).

Don't forget that you're also stuck in a coach seat with your knees
already stuck to that reclined seat back and millimeters to move side
to side. And this red scorpion is crawlin up your inside leg...
What a classic!!! :)

Aargh... and I'm flying Mesaba DTW-PWM next week...
By the way, do Mesaba's jets have seats lettered AB-CDE, or AB-
DEF? I ask simply because I've been preassigned 9E and I need to
know whether it's worth trying to change it.
We also have terrible, appalling, horrible seats (all middles,
none together for four of us) for BOS-DTW-DEN on Sunday; how
early do I need to show at Logan to have a reasonable chance of
getting them changed to better seats? Will 2.30pm for a 4.20pm
flight do? (We're WorldPerks members but without elite status;
I'm flying on a super-expensive full-fare ticket.)

With scorpions, your mileage really varies. The last time this
happened to me, II was at home packing for a flight the next morning,
and as I was poking around in one of the side pockets of my laptop bag
to make sure I had all my accessories, I was stung on the finger by
one of the big red ones. I had no idea how long he had been living in
there, waiting to dine on filet of nerd. No pain, but my arm went numb
all the way up to the deltoid.
I took my flight, no problems, but the effects of the sting took a
full week to wear off. It felt as though I were wearing someone else's
arm.

The only LoafHeads they like to see are the ones security stomps the

What you talkin' 'bout, Maryanne? Everyone knows that ex-Navy pilots
are the ones who like to make 'firm contact'--all those years of carrier
landings.
AF pilots only know how to land on wide, 12,000-foot runways! ;-)
Northworst, eh? Are they sure it wasn't one of the flight attendants? Good
thing it was just his hand.
And my late mother-in-law's advice was to keep the salt covered
because that's where scorpions like to pee. ;)

If you continue to harass me like this, I'll be forced to complaint to
your ISP. You have been warned.

Not that I ever wish to defend Maryanne, but she did not write the above.
Check the headers of that post and you'll find it is obviuously someone trying
to appear as maryanne.
Also, check the original list of junk newsgroups that were added (this post
goes only to rec.travel.air), another clear indication of a troll/spam.
BTW-Mesaba and Northwest are not one in the same, just as Continental and NWA
are not, but have a code-sharing agreement. NWA owns 30% of Mesaba stock.
That is definately a bizarre, unusual incident, but I really don't see why
Mesaba is totally to blame for that. How are they supposed to know if there is
a Scorpion is someone's bag? Or do you think they are coming from the hangar
in DTW? And, yes, I do work there. But, I had nothing to do with it! I'm in
charge of tarantula and Black widow patrol!!!! :-)
I won't take that personally since I work for Mesaba :-)

Earlier today, I sent ab...@corp.webtv.net a series of profane,
insulting posts from this newsgroup posted by a particularly malicious
"member" of our group and aimed at another. Haven't seen anything
from him recently. Wonder if they took any action, or whether he's
just out there lurking now. (Their privacy policy doesn't permit them
to tell you what they did.) I also noted in their automatic response
to my email that they apparently get complaints about folks who use
bogus names and who are not actually webtv subscribers. However, when
I printed out the whole header, various indicia in it (name of
launching server etc) made clear that this particular offender is
indeed a WebTV subscriber. If he begins to restrain himself, I'll be
glad to say, "Yay, WebTV."

Likewise. For someone with a medical education, you behave at the first grade
level. You have a wife, a house, a career (?). Shouldn't you be tending to
those things? Aren't they important to you? You feel the need to follow up to
every post that appears on r.t.a., usually with nonsense and meaningless
gibberish. That's for college kids. Pay more attention to your wife (and your
career, if you have/need one), or else one of these days you might find that

Nope, no mess at home or at work. Both are excellent. I'm not the one who

Yeah, I'm familiar with his take on her. I'm no fan of Mother T. for sure, but
Mr. Hitchens is a fairly nasty piece of work himself. I've seen him on TV a few
times. He makes our dear Dr. Laura seem like a cuddly and lovable kitten. He's
got the nastiest personality. A total cynic. And the poor chap's never heard
of taking a bath apparently. Shows up totally ungroomed, disheveled, unshaven,
eyes bloodshot and bulging out. I think he does crack right before he goes on
the air.

What a totally clueless individual you really are. How did you manage to get
into university? They're obviously not very selective down there in Australia
if they let you in. Elementary school children here in the U.S. have better
reading comprehension skills than you.

Again, what a totally clueless individual you are. I'm using the same handle
and e-mail address that you said you had killfiled. Obviously you either do not
know the meaning of the killfiling, or you don't know how to do it properly.
Let me explain something to you: when you say you're going to killfile someone,
you don't reply to them. But I doubt you understand this.
And please, by all means killfile me, if you ever learn how. It'll mean one
less asshole's follow-ups to my messages that I'll have to deal with.
Jeez, what an utterly oblivious and irrelevant imbecile you are....

Nope. He was indicted by a grand jury and is awaiting trial-- poor

to additionally resort to attacking one's spouse. What a man. Your
only defense for your lies are more lies.
I'd have a battle of wits with you---but you come completely unarmed.

No, only the ones you post your nonstop lies to.

Gee. more intelligent riposte from the liar. Babble on, Goebbels.
Yeah but it's cheaper and more fun than seat back videoscreens
Now there you have a plausible explanation, I must admit.
