Expedition Timeline
Every year, the Nakina River in British Columbia fills with chinook,
pink and sockeye salmon returning to the streams from which they were
spawned - and in their wake come grizzly bear, perhaps the most
fearsome predator in North America. Venture into the heart of this
four-million-acre wilderness to observe grizzly bear in their natural
habitat, and watch as they feed on the salmon forcing its way
upstream. This unique expedition brings you to the heart of bear
country, with no fences separating you from the animals. Spend five
days learning their ways and watching them in action, led by a guide
with nearly four decades' experience in living among bears.
Day 1
Arrive Whitehorse, Canada/Atlin/Nakina River Camp
Arrive in Whitehorse, the capital and principal city of the Yukon
Territory, and then proceed by charter flight to Atlin, British
Columbia, where you meet the private helicopter that completes the
journey to your expedition camp at Nakina River. The Nakina River lies
in the heart of 4 million acres of untamed wilderness: there are no
roads or towns, and the sense of isolation is both humbling and
thrilling. Gather with your guide for a safety briefing on grizzly
bears and a camp orientation, and then head out for your first bear
viewing before nightfall.
Days 2-4
Nakina River Camp
Spend the next three days communing with grizzly bear in their
natural habitat. You may not need to go far: often they congregate
around the camp itself, full of curiosity about the peaceful visitors
in their environment, and your morning breakfast may well be
accompanied by bear sightings. A short walk from camp in either
direction along the river soon reveals the bears in their natural
splendor. Observe them as they hunt salmon along the banks of the
river, play, spar and interact socially. Your guide knows the local
bears by sight and explains their history and relationships, as well
as their feeding and mating behavior. Throughout your stay here, you
are observing the bears up close, with no fences or enclosures
separating you; while he is armed, your guide has decades of
experience in living among bears and knows the secrets to observing
them safely and respectfully. Between excursions away from camp, take
your meals on the camp’s observation deck, watching bears passing by
on their way to and from the river. You also see plenty of eagle as
well as other forest wildlife.
Day 5
Nakina River Camp/Atlin/Whitehorse/Depart
After breakfast, enjoy a final bear viewing opportunity before
retracing your route back to Whitehorse, where you meet your homebound
flight.
