I think that there are more colours coming out every year
So here's a list of the colours properly available (ie. not pre-fabs).

Standard pieces
===============

Black
Red
Yellow
Blue
White
Green - Originally availbe as only a slim brick - they used to stack them
in 3's some times.
Grey
Dark Grey
Brown - On new Stingrays and Western
Light Blue? - Insectoids
Silver - 5542??? 25th US Aniversary also I think
Belville Pieces - Standard Ones - Dark Pink, also Dark green
Technic Related - Turqoise (SP?) and Purple, Fibre Optic Colour :)

Transparent Pieces
==================

Plain transparent
Trans-Dark red
Trans Ice Planet Red
Trans Green
Trans Dark green
Trans-light Green
Trans-Yellow
Trans-Dark Blue
Trans-Light Blue

Any others - I know LegoLand DenMark has more - judging from the
pictures, who's been there?

Sorry if I have missed some stuff on this N/G - I'm only getting 5
messages a day. Hmm

What about sand - there's plenty of that around now!

Now, more interestingly, when did the following colours first appear as
either 'normal' bricks or plates (discounting trees, barrels, oars, spears
etc.)

Green
Sand
Brown
Dk. Grey

My guesses are:

Green - Plates in mid-'80s in castle sets, bricks much later - 1996 Western?
Sand - plates and bricks in 1998, Adventurers
Brown - 1996, western
Dk. grey - plates in 1994 in Spyrius sets, bricks later in 1998
(Stingrays/Adventurers)

Please put me right if I am incorrect!

I have the first Western sets, but I can't recall any green bricks.
Maybe my mind is failing.

here, I would say train track cross pieces (what do you train guys call
them?) THough they are not regular plates, you didn't explicitly
discount them :) .

You are forgetting WILD WEST. Every 1996 WILD WEST sets fetured a tan base.

What about the purple notched trapezoid available in the Giant Model Set? It's
a plate that is 4 wide tapering to two by three high. A 2x1 notch is cut from
the base of the trapezoid. If you'll excuse my poor drawing, it looks vaguely
like this:

Never mind, you have purple under Technic, but although this piece comes in a
Technic set, it seems to have first originated in System.

There were green plates in the 1960s. Check out
the spare parts packs scans from Bill Katz that
are on Joe Lauher's pages under
http://www.chem.sunysb.edu/msl/LEGO/samsonite.html
for example
http://www.chem.sunysb.edu/msl/LEGO/60s_e3.jpg
You could get green plates in 1x1, 1x2, 2x2, 2x3, and 2x4
sizes. No green spare parts packs nowadays.

Not counting the new Scala colors such as warm light gray, I count 34 unique
colors (that's considering all elements and not just pure bricks). Here's my
list, with abbreviations:

--

"Trans" here stands for "Transparent" and is used as a prefix, for example
"Trans-Red" or "Trans-Green." Note that there is no "Trans-Blue" since there
are actually two types of transparent blue in the LEGO world -- transparent
light blue and transparent dark blue.

White White

Gray The lighter of the two Grays -- the classic Gray we all
grew up with

DkGray The darker of the two Grays -- a slightly brownish dark
gray as seen in Space, Time Cruisers, BURPs, etc.

Black Black

Blue Blue

LtBlue Light blue -- as seen on the Street Sweeper brushes

Teal Blueish-Green -- as seen in new 1998 Technic sets and
on various 1997 torsos

Green Green -- classic green as seen in foliage and baseplates

Pastel Green Old Paradisa Green, before the switchover to LtGreen

LtGreen New Paradisa/Belville Light Green

Yellow Yellow

LtYellow Light pastel Yellow, as seen in Belville

Tan Tan (very light brown), as seen in Wild West, Divers,
and Outback; not to be confused with LtBrown, which is
darker and richer than tan but lighter than Brown

LtBrown Light brown -- a color resembling butterscotch-candy --
as seen in DUPLO Dinosaur sets; not to be confused with
Tan, which is lighter yet than LtBrown

Brown Brown (dark brown), as seen in Wild West, Adventurers,
and various other places such as minifig hair

Orange Orange -- as seen on decorated tiles and other
decorated elements and in the DUPLO Brotosaurus
and in certain new 1998 Belville elements

Red Red

DkPink The darker of the two pinks -- a reddish/mauve color as
seen in Belville

Pink Light pastel Pink as seen in Paradisa (note that there
have been two light pastel pink formulations; the old
one was abandoned around 1994 and wasslightly lighter)

LtPurple Light Purple, as seen in Belville (not the same as the
Purple seen in 8277 or CyberSlam)

Purple A magenta-ish purple as seen in the 8277 Giant Model Set
and CyberSlam

PurpleBlue A purple-ish blue as seen in pneumatic tubing in the
Technic 8250 Search Sub

Gold Gold, as seen in bugles, coins, and Launch Command
Astronaut visors

Silver Chrome-Silver, as seen in swords, harpoons, knives,
hyrdolator crystals, and shiny Model Team elements

LtBlue-Chrome Light-Blue Chrome-Silver, as seen in Hydronaut suits

Glow-in-the-Dark Glows when charged under incandescent light or held in
black light, as seen in ghosts and 5-star magic wands

Clear Totally clear -- no pigment

Trans-LtBlue Transparent Light Blue, as seen primarily in Town

Trans-DkBlue Transparent Dark Blue, as seen primarily in Space and
Aquazone

Trans-Green Transparent Green, as seen in Space, Aquazone, Town,
etc.

Trans-GrYellow Transparent Fluorescent Greenish-Yellow, as seen in
Space and Aquazone

Trans-Yellow Transparent "Beer" Yellow, as seen in Space, Town, etc.
This is different from the "neon" greenish-yellow.

Trans-Orange Transparent Fluorescent Orange, as seen in Space and
Time Cruisers

Trans-Red Transparent Red, as seen in Space, Town, etc.

I wonder if it makes sense to think of this as a separate color.

I mean, If you look at the black and grey pneumatic tubing, neither of
those are really the same color as the black and grey bricks. Also if you
look at flex tubes the same phenomena arises -- the colors are different
from the brick colors. In fact there are at least two different colors
of yellow and of grey flex tube (the slightly different colors also seem
to have slightly different rigidities in this case.) Another example is
the red technic piston heads. They are a muddy red, but again probably
due to slightly differing types of ABS mixture - they are not really
meant to be a different color of red.

Just my 2 cents on what is otherwise apparently a perfectly accurate
list.

Is this the almost white, somewhat greyish color?

I am not sure I agree that these are colors. I would tend to think of
them as treatments, as they are plated on. Colors are molded in. I do
agree they need *names* though, to avoid confusion. I just wouldn't call
them colors.

Thanks for the list!!!

All the black-ish visors I've seen are opaque black. What set has

It's the Belville pastel purple, which is almost exactly the same color
as a purple SweeTart(R).
