At the moment I'm looking at the scan on Lou's page, and gotta say
"yuk!" What were they thinking when they designed it? Are there
really trains out there designed with separate passenger compartments
like that?

I am pleased to see the windows used (look to be the same as the Club
Car) and the train bed (same as used in the Road N' Rail Hauler and Club
Car, though in yellow) though. It looks like the set is a good foundation
for two yellow schemed Club Cars and an engine to pull them.

Gotta agree. I was sitting there thinking "do European trains look like
THAT?"

If (or when) someone that owns a club car buys this train, maybe they could
see how much of a club car they can build out of it, and let those of us
without (but in dire need of one) in on how to do it.

Am I the only one who thinks this set is cool? I think it's futuristic
and fits in the LEGO universe very well. Of course, I also liked the
Blacktron train (designed and built by Brian Ward) and the City X-er's
(designed and built by Jacob Sparre Andersen) which were in the last
r.t.l. building contest. The new train set seems to combine the black
and yellow color scheme of the Blacktron train with the modularity of
the City X-er's vehicles.

No. I think it's great. I'm gonna have to grab a second metroliner
for my "people" trains, but the freight train potential of this
set is *great*.

It's on the "gotta have" list.

I know there have been a lot of comments about the new 4559 train set,
but I just want to add my "thumbs down", too. It's very frustrating
that the only new train set pictured is some futuristic, goofy-looking
space-like thing. If I wanted a space set, I'd buy a space set!

I can't image real trains working anything like this in the future
(even in space).

Wait a second, I just thought of something. The biggest thing to hit the
railroads in recent years is the boom in container shipping. This is
where cargo is loaded in standard containers, and the whole containers are
moved between transportation modes: ships to trucks to trains. Lego has
incorporated this into some of the train and cargo ship sets. Anyway,
perhaps they're on to something: in the future, people will be loaded into
standard containers, and swapped from trains to trucks to planes. I can't
wait for the container-based airliner. :-(

What I'd really like to see is some elements that can be used for a
standard steam engine: driver wheels, siderods, and cylinders. Wouldn't
that work great with the new "Wild West" theme?

It seems that the general reaction to the new train is negative, but
I must say that I kind of like it. Sure its not very realistic,
but I think it has a sleek look to it, and from the little I see on
the picture, maybe it even has some clever features. I can't wait to
get my hands on one of them and start trying to build extra cars for it that
"fit in" with the general concept.

Anyway, just my two cents...

I was thinking that maybe the new train was worth buying so I could turn it
into something more normal looking, like the club cars, but the color
scheme is just awful. It's a shame, how train did a 180. I thought the
Metroliner was one of the best sets ever, so i was really psyched for the
'96 offering (maybe an intra-city train as opposed to the intercity type
like the Metroliner) but now I'm just depressed.

I like it too, but have refrained from comment because I'm not really a
town or train buff. I think it is right along the lines I was talking
about with the futuristic city type of genre I wanted to see.

Well I had played with the idea of module transport as a child (didn't
everyone with Lego? :) And I built a Modular Shuttle concept, where the
entire cargo bay of a space shuttle would be removable-a 6 dot by 16 dot
by 5-6 piece high bay which could be entirely cargo, passenger or whatever.

However, I too must express displeasure with this new 4559 set. I mean,
it's appealing to the worst part of the kid side, the flashy cool techno
trashy thing that drives Megazord Power Rangers and the like.

What happened to great sets like 4558 Metroliner or the 7745 TGV? Or the
7735 switcher? sheesh.

Well, to have "steam" you need 100 Centigrade, much higher than
the 104F LEGO recommends as a maximum. Some superconducting magnets
could cool the air near the train and produce fog, looks kind of
like steam %^)

Ron,

I had to laugh when I read this. I was about to post a reply that if
you'd REALLY like a great old fashion steam engine, then beg Ron Kittle
for a copy of his instructions for the Shay Locomotive! (summer Building
Contest) --- Then, of course I realize who wrote the posting!

Again, to all who love trains...Ron's train has to be the best design
ever! It really changed my mind about original creations. Now if only I
could get instructions for Brian Ward's works!

Actually, I think that this has either been proposed or is in use by the
military. If you need some extra passenger space in a cargo transport,
you just load in a passenger module which has the same exterior dimenstions
as a cargo container. Of course, I think in the realistic system, the
people get in *after* the container is loaded.

Hmm, I guess it appealed to the worst part of my kid side! And to think
I don't even like Megazord Power Rangers. :) It looks a lot niftier to
me than all those freight trains ... but I admit not being a real
train fan in the past.

I think it's cool looking. It's also kinda silly and I see why the
train fans don't like it.

that redundant. :-)

Allriught. The Lego version of the DeWitt Clinton (one of the first
trains. It consisted of nothing more than a steam enging pulling stage
coaches on train wheel.). Yeah, on narrow track. That would be coooool.

I have to agree with you there. I was surprised that the stripes were
painted on the doors. Unless you know what Amtrak is it would make no sense
having a red, white and blue stripe running across the side. All grey would
look pretty good, which is what one would expect considering the Metrolinew
was released worldwide.

One comment about the base plate: I seems to me it is longer than the
former CC & RnRH baseplate. The lower section on that was 16 studs long
while I came to 24 when I studied the scan of the new set. (It's hard
to determine from the scan, though - although it seems longer than
the old one.)

By the way, the new set sucks. It will never find it's way into my collection.

Liveries that I like are red/black, blue/white, blue, grey/yellow, and of
course black/yellow, but my favorite is the "older" dark green they never
seem to use anymore. The latter, of course, is impossible with LEGO at the
moment.

I was thinking that you could use incense cones, if you put them in little
insulated

very hot, especially if you had something insulating and nonflammable
between the incense and the legos...

And it would smell nice!

A the model train show over Thanksgiving break, I ran a 16' x 8' Lego

The overwhelming response was: "Wow! Daddy I want the AMTRAK!"

The similarities to US Modern Passenger Rail were foremost in the minds
of designers in the Lego think-tank, no doubt.

Because of the Amtrak scheme applied to the Metro-liner, it is one of
the only sets I do not dimantle and re-use. The silk-screened stripes on
the doors make them appear out of place unless they are on an
"Amtrak-esque" engine!

Now that new train <shudder>... WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? ;)

Graffiti? There isn't graffiti on any NYC subway trains.

As well as the Russian, British, Liberian, French, New Zealand, Australian,
US, (etc) flags. I've always thought that the color scheme was pretty
degenerate.. Too blinding to my overly light-sensitive eyes, for one thing,
and otherwise unoriginal..

(IMHO, of course.)

There is graffiti on the insides now. It used to be on the outside, now
it;'s on the inside (The 1 & 9 trains are notorious for it, I ride them
weekly).

Are you going to put clear decals on the
windows of the trains?, because that's the
only place where I've seen graffiti lately
besides an occasional marker on the wall. The
City is doing a great job in getting rid of
it, I know because I travel on the NYC Subway
system regularly.

As a Space set, the new train is not bad. I'm just pissed that this is the
ONLY train set that Lego is offering. That's not good.

Ok, so maybe its a space set, I'll give you that. But heck, my aliens
would love to take control of that thing....those cyro-freeze chambers are
great for carrying around humans. They can take them over to Fun Command
(the big amusement park chain in my world of aliens) and let them
loose...it'd be great fun! :)

I've been thinking about building the Stadtbahn for a while now. Only it
would be such a massive project, I don't think I could manage it for a long,
long time.
