The standard cannon amunition that was in each set was a black 1X1 tube,
1 brick high, hollow in the center. Cones of the same dimensions work
just as well.

1x1 Round Brick, in black. Same thing they still include as "cannonball"
now. These days it seems almost a waste <sigh>

My question is, what do they shoot? Anything that will fit in there, or
was there a piece made just as ammunition?

They shoot ordinary round pieces. I've noted they've got a hole in the
center of the knob/stud these days, which is essential.
Firing range abt. 2 m.
They're still sold in Europe, and I gan get them as spare parts for $3
a piece + shipment, if anybody are interested.

Well, i imagine USA's toy watchdogs didn't like these, but anyway, I
finally got a pair of them from an overseas trade deal. heheh gotta love
those aussies! I LOVE the shooting cannons. they are meant to shoot the
cylinders, the round 1by 1's. When I got my pair of them I sent a bunch
of these across the room to ping my husband with, he was not amused :}
only did thatto him the one time though, if I kept it up those cannons
might just disappear like all the squirtguns I keep buying.

Yes, this is VERY important - whatever you do, don't shoot any other
colored cylinders than black!!!
I heard of this guy once who tried to use a yellow cylinder (he must've
been smoking crack at the time) with a shooter and...well, let's just say
it was ugly. Poor guy.
8-)

The old ones, with solid studs, fire OK too, but might not go so far. (I
just tried. That's how bored I am :-) .)

It's a great way to lose 1x1s, though.
I used to build fantastic rubberband guns with lego, but I had to stop
because the cats find the lost ammo, and eat them. That's not as much
of a problem as what happens when Melinda finds out, though...
Oh, and cats HATE squirtguns! <tee hee>
When ya ping yer hubby, does he respond with an ICMP packet?

It also is _extremely_ foolish to try to shoot the 1x1 cones. They are a
more advanced form of artillery shell, and the results can be devastating.
