Some points about Borg's and Federer's runs to the titles without the
loss of a set.
(1) Borg was 21-0 in sets en route to the title. Rogers won 19 full sets
and one half-set, as his first round opponent retired down 3-0 in set two.
(2) Roger won 5 of his sets in tiebreakers. In 1976, the tiebreaking
rule was different. Tiebreakers were still first to seven points, win by
two, but at Wimbledon, a tiebreaker wasn't played until the game score
was level at 8, not six.
Borg won one of those, beating Roscoe Tanner 9-8 in the second set of
their semifinal, he won the TB by a 7-2 score. Borg was down a set point
at 4-5 (games) in that set, it was the only set point against him he
faced in the tournament.
There was only one other set that Borg played that would have gone to a
TB under today's rules: Set 3 versus Nastase in the final, which Borg
won 9-7.
(3) Borg was the 4th seed in the event, and beat seeds 14 (Gottfried), 6
(Vilas), 7 (Tanner) and 3 (Nastase). Federer was the 3rd seed, and beat
seeds 13, 11, 7, and 6 to win the title.
Anyway, just some trivia on two great accomplishments. Hard to believe
that with all the great W champs the past 40 years, nobody could match
Borg until Roger did it this year.
