no idea about his private life, but on the first series of Game, Set &
Matts on Eurosport in 2007 or 2008 FO, he was very very PRO Fed, he
even tried to ignore that Nadal was playing, it was all pretty much
about Fed about how good he was. 2009 and this year, he's changed a
bit to admiring Nadal more, maybe he's just come to the realisation
any casual tennis observer would come to.

every last bit of energy to beat Nadal, whereas they just lobbed balls
out the court, abandoned all common playing sense, tried new tricks
they'd never done before, retired randomly, helped/gifted him sets,

What did you expect? Nadal surprised everyone. Dave said that he “was
cooked stick a fork in him”. I did not expect him to win any slams on
HC and even had my doubts about GC. Nadal surprised everyone including
Mats. It is called jumping on the bandwagon.

I think he did benefit. The clay field post 2004 was the worst since 1916.

beat Ancic as a 17 yr old.
