With only 1 R1 match yet to complete (Lorenzi [32] leads Zeballos 2 sets to 1),
here's the round 1 roundup:
6 men's seeds lost, 6 women's seeds lost
7 men retired, just 1 woman retired

Is this part for the course or is the clay -> grass transition the reason
behind the retirements if not the upsets?

Apparently, those carrying injuries rather start the match and retire because they get paid for playing. If they pull out and allow a lucky loser to play, they don't get paid for reaching that round... This should obviously change to give audiences their money's worth.

UK newspaper reports that R1 losers 'earn':

AUS £33,500
FRA £30,000
WIM £35,000
USO £33,500

Dolgopolov on court for 42 mins, earning £833/min, winning 25 points at
£972/point

Klizan - 40m, £875/m; 25 points, £1,400/point

The ATP have revised their rules this year. If you withdraw shortly
before the event begins you still get your prizemoney AND a Lucky Loser
replaces you. The slams don't have to follow this rule, and are unlikely
to change unless all 4 agree to do so.

Interesting info, thanks! Wish the slams followed the ATP guidelines so
that the paying public doesn't feel cheated like it did yesterday when
both Djoker's and Fed's opponents retired after 40-45 mins.
