Long time reader, first time poster.

This shapovalov kids is the real deal. He may or may not beat Tsonga tomorrow but he will be a multiple slam winner in the decades to come and may even rival the GOATs/BOATs you all drool over.

I was lucky enough to see Shapo court side at his most recent challengers before he rocketed into the top 100. This kid is pure excitement and energy, and will inspire a new generation of attacking, shot making tennis players. All the shots are there, even if the net game needs some seasoning. He's got the mind of a champion, and runs with momentum like no one else I've seen before. And the serve... my goodness what a beautiful shot. You can build a hall of fame career around that singular stroke.

Thank god for this. I was starting to lose my mind with the mind numbing, baselining, probabilistic tennis that typified the play of the top four/five (minus federer) players who have had a stranglehold those spots and grand slams for the past decade. Not to mention those so called up and comers in the 20 to 25 age group who have done nothing but disappoint.

So, here we go. Tennis is fun again. Hats/Chapeaus off to Denis and best of luck in this us open and the many tourneys to come.

Not only that, but he has adopted the annoying 'bounce the
ball behind the back and then through the legs' pre-service
routine a la Isner.

Can you imagine watching that for years to come?
I think I'd rather watch him stick his finger up

You guys are complaining about a backwards cap and a pre-service routine? *rolls eyes* Watch his tennis style and his enthusiasm! He's a future champ, wait and see. Much more interesting to watch than Lurch Zverev. WTF was Lurch Zverev wearing last night? Tube socks? *rolls eyes* He looked like an idiot.

So Rafa is 'out of sorts' when he is off clay, right?
So is he 'out of sorts' now? Or do you expect him to win the USO?
Or is he 'out of sorts' only when he loses?

I don't like the backwards-cap thing either, not a bit, but some things you just
have to let go. :) Shap seems like a good kid, and his tennis is, as noted above, the most exciting thing since RF. What I want is for him to do well so
the juniors will see attacking OHBH tennis as cool. No more Murrovic shit!

I thought it was meant to be French Legionnaire style. But he said he first saw players using it in Australia and thought it looked stupid on first sight. Then, once he tried it, he found it a great relief from the heat. Anyway, I never minded that at all. Backwards cap on the other hand simply looks moronic.

Well yes and no.

Sampras was just a year older than Shap is now and I pegged him
for an all-time great the first few times I saw him play.

I don't see that in Shap now. His game will likely develop/change
but as you say, at least for him, it is far too early to make
any greatness calls yet.

And we have to study this over-the-top 'first-time' post from Chapeau
carefully.

Look at the language. Look at all the things he is saying.
I would love him to come back, stick around a bit,
so we figure out exactly who he is from his style/language.

He hasn't had the nerve to come back and reply to anyone yet.

Gracchus, making a statement such as you did above that all players who wear a backwards cap are cretins who can't be respected regardless of their tennis game is a dumb statement.

Why don't you watch Shapovalov's tennis before you declare him a lunatic for wearing a backwards cap?

As for Tommy Haas, he has nothing to do with it. I couldn't care less if a player wears a backwards cap. Zverev's tube socks the other night were much more idiotic IMO but even in that case, I don't care what he wears at the end of the day.

You make ridiculous blanket statements all the time, so not a great one to talk.

I will watch him play, and maybe I'll immediately become a huge fan of his tennis. But it won't change my view of wearing the backward cap. Why would it? Do you think the cap is the key to his abilities?

I never said his tennis abilities shouldn't be taken seriously. Obviously if he's a winner, they should. That's why I referred to Hewitt earlier as an example.

The trouble is that the cap is right there, in everyone's face, gnawing
away at the viewer's tolerance for it, in every image of him on screen,
whatever shot he's hitting. It builds up to breaking point.

Notice that hardly any women wear caps backwards. That's because women
have enough fashion sense to know it's just a terrible look. OTOH men
like Hewitt, Haas and Shapovalov are dumb and clueless.

I'll stop chastising people when they pipe down about a damn irrelevant placement of a cap! We discuss a lot of pointless things on this ng but this one tops the list.

Not sure it was Sasha's choice, these quite ridiculous tube socks.
Made him look like some baseballer, wich seems more like a sponsor's choice than a player's one.

I quite like his shirt, for despite pointing at baseball outfit when mixed with these tube socks, initially reminded me Borg's clothes (because first pic I saw wasn't from feets to head).

Elite, OK... threat for winning majors, fine. BUT GOAT??? I watched those famous Sampras semi and final matches in 89 and, well, he looked like a future champion... but no one would have predicted anything like 14 majors... that was out in the dark reaches of space... :)

Well GOAT wasn't even in my vocabulary back in those days. :)
The term is meant to single out just one player.

Notice I said "...I pegged him for an all-time great the first few times
I saw him play."

"an" being the operative word.

Heck at the time I didn't even know who had the most slams and what the
number was!

I just knew Sampras was heading straight for the top and quickly.
I could see no holes in his game and a mighty arsenal at his disposal.

But that's the common consensus. That's why Shap is a breath of fresh air. It's been a long time since many people have been so thrilled to see a young player with all the shots and with so much promise.

Fedfans are realistic enough to know that Fed won't be around for much longer so a replacement is needed. If the new generation is dominated by Zverev and Thiem it will be a nightmare (a bit like the Djokovic-Nadal era). With Shapofed in the mix it'll be much more interesting. It'll be just like old times again!

Nah, exciting players like Shapo won't be a threat to Nadal's slam count. Sloggers like Thiem and Zverev are much more likely to stop Nadal on clay, while on other surfaces virtually anybody can do it.

bob is right, the current 19 mark is unsafe, that's why Federer should not be fooling around but should focus on winning at least two more. In fact 23, would be very very safe. Otherwise he will have a Sampras done on him with someone (Nadal or Djok) possibly passing him when he is hardly retired.

I think it's quite realistic that Nadal could win 4-5 more slams, but most if not all of them would be more FOs. And at this point, I wonder if he'd rather win 1 more USO than another 2 FOs.

But it isn't just Fed fans who are excited about Shapovalov. He's captured the interest of fans of all players. He's the real deal with all of the shots, a good head on his shoulders and he has that star quotient. Your assessment of him is completely off (what else is new?) Finally, there's a younger player to get enthusiastic about after players like Federer and Nadal retire.

To the extent that everybody would love to get W, Nadal also would. However, he has 2 W's already, so yes the 19 mark is probably the goal, not slam distribution.

You said only Fedfans are excited about Shapovalov and I replied that fans of all players are enthusiastic about Shapovalov and rightly so.

As for you assessment of Shapovalov, you watched the one match where he played average. Go watch clips of him on You Tube when he played Tsonga at the USO or Nadal in Montreal.

You're definitely sexist. I believe I said that to you years ago based on some of your comments. Some male posters use the "c" word on here daily and nobody bats an eyelash. I make comments such as Sloane (specifically) looks like Aunt Jemima and I'm labelled as a racist, hysterical, a hyena, etc. Keep going, it's amusing.
