Coco News: Coco v. Schiavone?

Driving from the practice tennis courts to her home in Newport Beach
two weeks ago, Coco Vandeweghe answered her cell phone. Mary Joe
Fernandez, coach of the United States’ Fed Cup team, was on the line.

The news was fantastic, Fernandez informing Vandeweghe she would be a
member of the U.S. team that will face Italy in next week’s Fed Cup
final at the Sports Arena.

“I screamed,” said Vandeweghe, the 18-year-old from Rancho Santa Fe.
“I was stoked.”

Fernandez will officially announce the U.S. squad today. Joining
Vandeweghe will be singles players Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Melanie
Oudin, plus doubles specialist Liezel Huber . . . .

HmMmm, I hadn't caught that the Fed Cup final is going to be in _San
Diego_, which means that South Californian Coco will be bringing a
heavy home-team crowd in and increasing home-court advantage.

Although I don't think that was determining in her choice as final
team member (her big jump in rank this year and late-season
performances, along with already having been a US Fed Cup team
practice partner twice before, were more than enough for that).
