Muted, anticlimatic celebration of final point. Hard to be much else after this kind of match.

Yeah, he had some kind of injury.

It's weird, during the on-court interview rounds they all now just mention
his supposed injury as a statement of fact. But I saw no actual treatment
going on during that little crying intermission. Or any signs of physical
injury during the first set.

I disagree with those who say he tanked mentally. Seems like he had a
minor foot/ankle issue coming in to the match, you could see that it was
taped before he called for the trainer. I think he then exacerbated it
when he slipped midway through the first set making that great angled
return off Fed's drop shot.

It happens to big guys like that, and it also shows the big advantage
Federer had over not over Cilic but also Murray and Nadal by skipping
the clay events avoiding that kind of wear and tear.

Blijster on the bottom of his foot. They retaped it after the 2s and gave
him some painkillers.

Is that like a Clijsters?

Brutal to think about, however, there's a reason people are tortured by purposefully injuring the bottom of the foot, due to all the nerve endings in that/those extremity/ies.

Such blisters can be excruciatingly painful.

Yeah, and then for each ball you run for and miss, you get the physical pain to punctuate losing the point. Easy to get demoralized as it progressively grows worse. And any painkiller strong enough to actually help would have created other hazards.

Thanks, i actually missed those 10-15 minutes when he was being treated.
Blisters are rough, and obviously he had them before this match started.

If they are in the wrong place they can just mess up your ability to
concentrate, and to move.

He was overcome with emotion because he knew the injury would prevent him from fully competing. That's understandable. After all the hard work, to be dealt bad luck on the biggest occasion is unfair. From what I see, he's a great guy and deserves better. He has the game to win the biggest titles.

Apparently it takes more than "having the game" to actually win them
though. I'm a fan of Cilic and have been for a long time, but this was a
bad showing for him, blisters or no blisters.

What if Cilic played Berdych instead? Just trying to weigh opponent vs. injury for the bad showing. Fully healthy, it was gonna be a tough climb against Federer. The injury took the suspense away.

Maybe people put too much stock into that one match when he crushed Federer in NY. The potential is there, just needs to summon it consistently. That's the tough part. Record vs. the Big Four is worse than I expected.

He would have played ten sets no problem at all.

The blisters perhaps did not trouble him as much in the third set. Otherwise the scoreline would read 6-2 6-1 6-0. Andy's hip pain caused him to lose the last two sets 1-6 1-6! To Querrey!

It would be a close match given their history of previous meetings but I think Cilic may have a slight edge because he actually won the last 2 meetings, Berdych would also be nervous that may help Cilic in settling his own nerves.

an A game cilic loses that match in 3 sets IMO, maybe closer sets.

we've built cilic into some sort of great player, but really he's off
quite often. he struggled mightily VS querry, and who's querry?

The commentators on Aus TV said he practised for two hours the day
before. Pretty dumb if he was struggling with blisters, or they weren't
bothering him then.
