I'm thinking of diving into it (in translation) and wonder if others
here have
any thoughts on it, esp those who have a taste for 19-20th c French
lit, eg
Gide (a favorite) and Proust.

Haven't read it, but thanks for mentioning it. I'll read the original
French version. It's on my list now.

What was it about Carey's inquiry that prompted you to add the book to
your list? He wasn't recommending it -- just asking about it.

I looked it up and apparently it's an important work in 20th century
french literature. And I am currently in a mode of reading French
books, rather haphazardly though. So Carey's mentioning of the book
matches up with my current reading interests. That's all.

Though I do not read French, here are a couple of the books I'd want
to read in the original if I could --

Georges Arnaud - The Wage of Fear
Pierre Schoendoerffer - The Paths of the Sea (the basis for the great
film Le Crabe-Tambour)

French colonialism is of interest to me so I'll be looking for the
film Le Crabe Tambour- thanks.
