...takes out Bautista Agut 4 and 4. Some nice net play in the first set.

He is playing low percentage tennis, win or lose.

Mmm. That's not what I saw, or think I saw.

I still don't have a good feeling about him playing this tournament, though.

yes, he was ok in the first set, but second set was poor from both players with bad misses all over. Roger seemed quite unfocused and Agut may have been demoralized after missing some breakpoints.

i'm a big fan of Agut, met him at the players lounge in a tournament, was looking for a place to sit and eat with my dad/kids and he and his coach were happy to share their table and chat with us.

How did you know you were sitting with Agut?
Did he have a name tag on his hat? :)

i had no idea who he was before his coach told me! He was quite unknown back then (he can probably still walk around anywhere, even in Spain, without anyone recognizing him), but ended up making it to the finals (probably thanks to the good karma from his good deed!)

Scratchy second set though.

He wants to peak in New York, so I am not too fussed at the moment. The draw has opened up for him, so he could even win this without having to dig too deep.

I thought Fed did pretty well at the AO this year with no tune-ups, but opinions
will vary, for sure.

He played Brisbane for that exact reason... he got to play singles (3 matches I think? losing to Zverev in the singles final) and got to played mixed doubles, to work on his net game and serving... Yes, it's an exhibition+ type atmosphere but it was important for him before AO... right now, Feds' tournament 1st serve percentage is around 47% AND his backhand has gone off line - the 2017 level backhand he's dominated with so far this season...

He's clearly looking for some match play to work out his timing issues...

So, far none of his matches have been physical matches...

In what way will they vary? I think you're 100% wrong as opinions will
not vary at all.

I don't think Fed has any timing issues at all. He's just practicing
for USO. If USO started today you'd see a far more focused performance
from him.

Unless he faces Nadal in which case he will lose in straight sets according to you. :)

Nadal has to get by clowns on hc like Pouille, Dimitrov, Verdasco, etc. etc. He's lost to clown after clown on hc in the past few years. He stands on Mars to return a serve on hard court and he's been terrible on break points in big moments.

He decides how much energy he is willing to spend, so you can't decide if he is rusty or not.

He wouldn't burn himself out there for a title in Canada.

He doesn't have to burn himself out to win the title in Canada. Is Haase going to burn him out? The only players who have any shot at beating him would be Zverev/Shap in the final and it's a long shot for both.

Federer knows what he's doing. Stop speaking for him. It's eerie. He didn't play the entire clay season so how could he be burned out? He's obviously trying to get in hc practice matches before the USO and at the same time letting the Montreal fans see him live again.

AO. I say there are zero.

I agree Rafa's prospects aren't looking great atm. He'll need to find a
way to get into beast mode. We know he's capable - the fun part is
seeing if he actually does it or limps out.

Read the thread to understand my post.
Patrick says he is rusty and I said he will look rusty because he wouldn't play at 100% there

Rafa's 'beast mode' ended the moment he stepped on grass. Might as well put him on ice until April 2018.

Ya, among the press, there was a kind of surprize at Rafa's attitude all week in Canada... It had some wondering if there wasn't something else going on with Rafa; needless to say, losing to a teenager just kept him in a temper; missing out on getting back to #1 (for now) almost had him boiling over... AND YET, no one could find out anything solid as to why Rafa was so agitated all week in Canada. The issue has some of the guys I know in the press looking out for Rafa when they go to Cincinnati... its becoming a bit of a back story... is it just the pressure at the prospect at getting back to #1 or are there other issues behind the scenes... so far no one has sused it out...

Rafa has not been mentally at his best the entire season, apart from RG
where he was great in all aspects.

Shapovalov did play and serve great though, which made it a matter of
few points... is he Russian born / of Russian heritage?

Mentally not at his best apart from RG? lol

Why? Is his brain buried under clay, and he plugs it in when he is on clay?

Listen, nadal did very well in 2017, slam final and a master final on HC.
As I mentioned before, as players get very old, they lose their flexibility to adjust to surfaces they are not comfortable with.
This applies to Nadal and Federer.

I expect Federer to ignore clay going forward and Nadal killing himself to win everything on clay as well.

I'm not sure why but it's the truth. Playing big moments and especially
break points poorly. Probably an extended confidence issue, which has
been improving but still not fully there.

Shap's parents were both born in what was formerly the Soviet Union. They emigrated to Tel Aviv and that's where Denis was born and then the family moved to Canada before Dennis was a year old.
