He would have won more than 7 slams. Ditto Hoad who Whisper raves about.
If he was that good why was he a flop on the pro tour?

Hoad had some lingering injuries... he liked to live well/party... and liked to drink...

In his days AO and FO have been less relevant than they are today.

If you compare him at Wim, USO with others he's pretty good, 3rd
most successful in modern era.

Wim+USO

12 Sampras, Federer
11 -
10 -
9 -
8 -
7 McEnroe, Connors
6 -
5 Borg, Djokovic
4 Becker, Edberg, Nadal
3 Murray, Agassi, Lendl
2 Hewitt, Rafter

* in case of a tie;
a) more Wimbledon titles
b) chronologically

Mac was superb. Priorities back then just were different. You had Davis Cup still important, clearly lesser slam (AO) which was skipped by most, tuneups counted more...financially.

3W 4USO, 3YEC, 5WCT and 4 times (in-a-row) #1...+ DC + Doubles. Not tier1 resume by current standards but during 80:ies it was arguably best open era resume just behind Borg.

If da Vinci was such a painting badass he'd have done more than 15. You
guys who obsess over quantity are probably premature ejaculators.
