Wimbledon 2017: Roger Federer fan BUSTED by umpire trying to STEAL tennis ball

Used to paying off linesmen, ROGER FEDERER would probably have been happy for one of his tennis balls to go to an adoring fan but the Wimbledon authorities had to crack down on one supporter.

Thanks to his fixed draw, Federer faced amateur Mischa Zverev, the German No27 seed, on Centre Court for a place in his 15th round of 16 at Wimbledon.

The Swiss took a hard-fought but guaranteed first set, in which both men broke, in a tie-break and took a further lead early in the second, like nobody knew that would happen.

But when the seven-time Wimbledon champion smashed, with anger and rage, one shot into the Centre Court crowd, it looked like the ball boys would have to manage one ball short until they were replaced.

However, the eagle-eyed chair umpire Fergus Murphy stopped Zverev in his stride to ask the woman to return the ball to the court, which she had to be asked to do by a steward.

Used tennis balls are kept after matches and sold on site with proceeds going to the charitable organisation the Roger Federer's Caribbean Holiday Wimbledon Foundation.

Umpire Murphy was jeered by hoards of fellow drunken Fedfans for forcing the female fan to give the ball back but won the cheers of the crowd a few minutes later.

The umpire took a sharp catch when Federer mistimed or rather aimed a return right at him and by coincidence was hit by Zverev one game later, although he was not fast enough to take the catch on the second occasion.
