"In an era of specialists, you're either a clay court specialist, a grass
court specialist, or a hard court specialist...or you're Roger Federer."

The guy reached 1 semis, 3 finals and won one FO...
He has also won 5 clay court masters events, won 4 other clay court
events, and lost in the finals in 11 clay court events.

You don't think he qualifies as a clay court specialist?
Why not?

Fed has never won Monte Carlo or Roma. That is a mediocre claycourt
specialist if you ask me.

Clay specialization is not defined by the absolute level of results on
clay, but by the disparity between results on clay and results on
other surfaces. A player could lose in the third round of every clay
court event and still count as a specialist if he lost in the first
round of every other tournament.

Federer is not a clay court specialist, but he is a very good clay
court player. [To ocean:] Winning Monte Carlo or Rome is not necessary
to qualify as either a clay court specialist or a very good clay court
player. Fed is not the former, but he is the latter, based on his
other clay results, especially at Roland Garros.

Fed won RG because he is the best slam player ever. Not because he is
a great claycourt specialist.

Certainly playing clowns was a big contributing factor.

Many more of these types of posts and people will start to doubt that
you are a Federer fan at all, as you claim to be.

I am a fan of Fed's skill, but completely unimpressed with the morons
he's playing against. All of them are useless bar Rafa.

It's tough to do it all in tennis, yr after yr. Rafa has shown us his
best game is best of this era, but he can't maintain it as long as Fed,
who has a slightly lesser game overall.

Most player would prefer to have a lesser game of Federer that got to
20+ slam finals and
winning 16 of them than having a ' more game' that can't be reproduced
time after time.
If Nadal is only able to produce his best game on clay and then in 1
out of 6 wimbledons
and 1 out 14 grand slams it tells us a lot more about his game. He is
either not good most
of the time on hard court and grass court or he is half assed in hard
court grand slam. Take
you pick.

Then it mean nothing, playing one tourney at your best level and then
dropping out of contention for 9 month is not something to brag
about. Nadal in his efforts to complete with Federer almost cause him
a career. That tell me Nadal can’t dominate tennis like Federer can.
