The world number nine has failed to make it past the last 16 in any event he
has played this year and believes fatigue is the cause of his current slump.
With the French Open under two weeks away he was hoping for a change in
fortune at the Masters Series in Hamburg but he fell to Andreas Seppi in his
opening match.
The 21-year-old will not play next week and admits that he is unsure if he
will be at Roland Garros when the French Open begins on May 25.
"I am completely burnt out," said the Wimbledon semi-finalist. "I haven't
fully recovered from the efforts I made last year. And I am paying for it at
the moment.
"I am not fit to play tennis - running, moving, everything is becoming
difficult. I am going to cut myself off for the week. Forgetting about my
racquet can't do me any harm.
"For Roland Garros, we will see. Don't expect a big tournament from me - if
I take part in it.
"I am going to put down my racquet for a week. Then I'll come back to
training and we will see then. It is nearly two years since I have had a
break. I miss that.
"Imagine what I would do at Roland Garros, it would not be nice for anyone."
Fatigue from last year! I think it is more the case that he just isn't
that interested in professional tennis. It's a tough life and not
everyone is cut out for it, and Gasquet would seem to be one of those
for whom it brings nothing but misery.
he's 21 and he's burnt out? welcome to life, Richard. some of us are
in our 40s. We're burnt out but we can't quit our day jobs.
Poor f'ing kid has been playing tennis since he was a toddler. We
can't relate to his life (even though I'd kill to be a top-20 player).
Yes, but none, or I imagine few of us are at the top 20 at our
professions.
