World Number One Jelena Jankovic gets mowed down by Marion "Ball-Gun"
Bartoli 6-1 6-4.
It was so bad that early in the second, on Jankovic's second serve at
break-point, Bartoli moved forward to _half-way_ between the baseline and
the service box (no exaggeration at all) and got down into her low
butt-waggling return posture, like a cat getting ready to go after a bird,
in an obvious intimidation-move, which worked, tactically, drawing the
netted second serve and break she wanted, but may've back-fired a bit
operationally or strategically in making Jankovic mad and waking her up a
bit.
Great match.
And, BTW, on Bartoli's final service-game, for the match, she got to three
match points, and on missing a serve _did not_ fiddle with any Miss Nancy
second-serve nonsense but went for it, over one hundred miles an hour, not
quite a complete first serve but darned close.

No, no exaggeration. She would have had to hit almost a half-volley
return.

From Bartoli anyway. Terrible from Jankovic. It looks really bad when
the no. 1 player is pushed around like that and has nearly every 2nd
serve punished for a winner. The no. 1 who should be doing that. She's
only a shadow of the 2008 JJ.

What happened to those strength-exercises she was supposed to have if
anything over-bulked-up with over the off-season? they sure didn't add
anything to her serve or strokes.
I mean, she had already amped-up her power quite a bit-- I mentioned just
recently how I'd noticed her in the China Open last year basically
overpowering Kuznetsova-- so I wonder what that was all about.
She needs serve-improvement more than anything else, more aces and
service-winners; her rallying has always been fine, with her wheels her
single most outstanding asset.

Her serve was pretty good at the USO. Not big, but enough to be
effective. I remember thinking that it wasn't really a big weakness
any more. Now she's serving like a no. 100.

Well, that's the way she learned to play tennis, returning the serves
standing inside the court. She used to play when she was young on a
court in a gymnasium or something like that, with the wall not too far
from the baseline.

Don't ask me, I'm totally bewildered by the goings-on on the wimmen's side.
About the only note of normalcy is Serena still plugging along.
