Many of you Fedfans, like Dave, holler on that nobody has ever heard
of Galo Blanco, well you're wrong, HE IS VERY FAMOUS actually. So
famous that the new hero of Fedfans seeked out and chose him as his
coach even! so there.

Sure. He's mostly famous for beating Sampras. He may be a good coach,
but he was at best middling as a player, even as claycourt specialists
went.

He was no Charlie Fancutt, that's for sure.

Sampras never lost to Blanco. It was a 'match-up issue' so doesn't count.

Ask Pedro he'll back me.

Most good coaches weren't great players. Being good at something
doesn't mean you're good at teaching that something. Sometimes quite
the opposite... you can't teach talent.

Of course, and this match-up issue was a doozy: Sampras sucked on clay
and Galo Blanco didn't.

Now, to bring your argument on Federer over to this thread, I assume
you're about to tell us that Sampras must have sucked, right?

He didn't suck on clay as he beat 7 FO champs on clay, won Italian Open,
Davis Cup on clay etc. The loss to Blanco doesn't count for the same
reasons Fed's losses to Rafa don't count - match-up issue.

Rafa as we know is probably the best clay court player ever in the game. And what is Blanco's standing in the game ? Journey men and not even a top 50 regular during his whole career. If Sampras had a match up issue against a journeyman and what does that say about Sampras clay court capability. Amazing level of stupidity is shown in the above post.

bob's just knows a common sense argument when he sees it esp. this one
about Blanco.

That would have been a decent argument if we were talking about, say,
Wheaton. But Sampras was a *much* weaker player on clay than he was on
any other surface. So yes, he sucked on clay.

There's an argument somewhere in there? Listen, the reasons Nadal is a
match-up issue for Federer have been hashed out at length. The match-
up issue Sampras had with Galo Blanco had nothing to do with anything
above ground level.

Is Whisper still goin on about Sampras winning a clay "tune up"....that will
clearly mean "f*#k all". The guy is a walking contradiction....I wish there

I just love the name. Blanco. Says it all really.

But he's a decent coach and he can honestly tell his grandkids that he
once whupped
Sampras at Wimbledon. That's enough of a life story right there.

Medical condition, which meant he didn't put in best efforts for minimal
reward. You take this as a real measure of his absolute form as a
tennis player.

That makes more sense than a guy with Sampras' record secretly being a
mediocre player with a serve, who was No.1 so long due to a series of
colossal flukes.
