hey, nemanja, can you drop me a line at dgos...@webmd.net? i just
sent you a long e-rant that was bounced back. (you don't have an
e-rant filter, do ya?)

OK, tennis -- I think Clijsters' win over Serena is being devalued
because of (a) Serena's fatigue and (b) Kim's low winner count. But
what a smart game she played against someone she's never beaten and
who is probably the toughest woman to hit a winner against.

Clijsters moved great -- those soccer genes really showed -- and
played the angles of the court wonderfully. Actually, she played a
fairly old-school match, using geometry and
get-the-ball-over-one-more-time tactics against a
hit-a-winner-or-end-the-point opponent. Nice contrast ...

Yeah,I think if Serena had had an easier match against Capriati, she
would have won. But she didn't, and the fact that Clijsters has now
beaten her (and in a big match) has to impact their future matchups.
Their first matchup 2003 will be telling.

by whom? Everyone is giving her lots of credit.

fatigue? Serena had a shoulder strain, but not fatigue.

Absolutely.

Serena said "Kim played a very good match. She deserved to win". What else
more need be said?

A few years back there was a regular rst-er named Kris, from Canada,
and I was excited to learn that we were both planning to attend the
French Open at the same time and I'd finally get a chance to meet him.

Errr ... HER.

It was pretty funny when the hotel phone rang and it was a girl's
voice on the other end saying, "Hi, it's Kris. I'm downstairs." (Hey,
Vancouver Kris, you still lurking out there anywhere?)

I think it's so interesting how we make gender assumptions based on
vocabulary and writing style. All the hidden little signals that we
send out, largely subconsciously, about ourselves ... Like at some
level we may be a male writer trapped in a woman's body, or vice
versa.

Actually, in that case probably more the spelling. Kris is usually male;
Chris can be either.

For some reason I never thought so. And this is not the first time
this has been discussed.

That I thought too, until few years back he said something about
playing against Ljubicic as a junior.

This is something that has happened to me before, with job applications and
stuff. The interviewer being clearly surprised that I was a man. Which I
suppose isn't that surprising.
I find here in Sweden there are names that confuse too - I always thought
Bodil was a man's name, for instance. Turkish names tend to do as well.

Junior is putting it mildly - I think we were both 10 or 11.
I don't get the age thing though - how old did you guys think I was?

It's the final vowel. At least, *I* expect names ending in -a
to be female. Wrong language group, obviously. :-)

You *do* sound older than that. I would have thought mid-thirties
or older. Maybe it's just a good education. Also, you don't show
many of the idioms today's youth uses.

I think it's *any* vowel ending name tends (not 100% obviously) to be
female in English names. On auto-pilot, I also thought for a while that
Sakari was female as well (!). My mistake.
