He looks like he has never played pro tennis.
Actually the problem is Federer does not know how to play Nadal's
tennis.
The high rpm exploding balls is not a tennis that Federer likes or
accepts in the back of his mind.
He does not want or does not know how to adjust to these spins and
bounces specially with his classic style.
He was able to compensate when he was younger but now he looks like a
guy coming from the senior tour.
He looks better when he decides to be aggressive and look like a
disaster when he plays his normal game against Nadal.

And Nadal, when he plays his style against Fed on the fast low-bouncing
indoor courts....conditions more representative of how the game used to be
off-clay? The thing is that during Fed's dominance the conditions were
shifted more to that style....but we still see what happens at WTF. Just the
way it goes....Nadal's game was designed to thusly dismantle Fed's on
clay.....and then the rest happened. Luck old Nadal! :)

Rogi's a poodle, plain and simple. He's becoming an embarassment for the
sport. Wish they didn't air these matches.

Roger's an "embarrassment to the sport?" I reckon Andy Roddick knows a
bit more about tennis than you do:

Yes, you have to find some way to impose your game on your opponent.
All out aggression is the best strategy v Rafa, because you're not going
to beat him massaging the ball from the baseline - he thrives on that.

Interesting then how the person with the most success against Nads on clay
doesn't play all-out aggression against him, eh? If you have some tennis
skills, a great 2HBH, and can move well on clay....you are in with a shout.

Djokovic is simply a stronger player than Fed.

You like to pretend that it's about whether you're using one hander or
two... but there's really only one player that can truly challenge Rafa
on clay, and even Djoke's backhand doesn't stand the pressure if Rafa is
hitting the ball well.

Besides, Rafa played Fed like he would have played Nole, going to
forehand quite a lot. That just makes it even tougher for Fed.

If by stronger, you mean "lesser", then we are in agreement. That is in
overall terms of course. I think in absolute terms he will prove to be about
Nads level in the grand scheme. In current terms, he is clearly superior to
both Nads and Fed.....which of course reflects worse on Nadal as he is
almost ages with him.

> You like to pretend that it's about whether you're using one hander or

I don't pretend anything. If Fed had a 2HBH things would be different as
Federer then would be able to deploy the greater skill and range of
shotmaking he possesses. It's a fundamental mechanical problem he
suffers....the racquet, strings and technique Nadal has developed take the
one-hander out of the game. I am not saying that Nadal is then an
easy-beat....clearly not. You still need to be a good player and mover to
get it done.....enter stage right: Nole.

> Besides, Rafa played Fed like he would have played Nole, going to forehand

If by forehand you mean "backhand as usual", then yes, yes he did....it's
his goto get-out-of jail option, time and again. Why wouldn't he? It's an
intrinsic flaw of the two styles on surfaces that bounce high. He has
exploited that to it's maximum potential.

As usual, reductionistic and demeaning.Sure you can blame backhand
style even
though many other 2hbh's can't beat him. Nole beats Rafa because he
can move
him around and then finnish him. Being a static , one dimensional
player gets exposed
by Rafa.

And does he use his superb 2HBH to do this? How about the BH return on the
leftie serve out wide on big points....he use that? Vladthelad off wandering
in the herbal section yet again.

> Being a static, one dimensional player gets exposed by Rafa.

Luckily, Djokovic is super mobile....and has a good 1.24 dimensions to him!
Just enough to Spannish him off.

but Fed relies on the 1hbh for movement/speed, he'd be hindered with a
2hbh. Fed'd probably be sacrificing Wimbledon for a 2hbh to win a
match or two on clay.

yeah on a day when Nole is running in super-gluten-free mode and Nadal
less than his best, Djoker's in with a very good chance, as he can
cover both sides and he has an aggressive return. If that edge goes,
then even on hard, Djoker is vulnerable, just ask Murray even at the
USO.

like Fed/Djoker have out-rallying clowns I suppose.

Forget about clay. There are pretty much even elsewhere. Graf had a
tough time against Sanchez on clay, but she figured out a way. I
wonder why Federer never could do it.

Graf vs ASV overall h2h is 25-8

...tough time on clay? Their clay meetings are 13-4....ASV:s four wins are from 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994... (= there is no specific clay pattern).

Nadal is superb clay BOAT & GOAT and noone in the history can give him consistent problems on clay....while ASV is barely top10 on clay and she never was dominant on surface, far from it.

Who beat Graf the most times in slams? Actually Graf had a tough time
off clay against Sanchez as well, until she figured her out.

Oh, wonderful. ANOTHER thread knocking Fed because of his difficulty
with Rafa.

Earth to PeteWasLucky:

1. Fed is 31 years old. Pete had retired at this point.

2. Fed is the only member of the Big Four-Minus-Nadal who seems
mentally capable of mounting a challenge against the Spin Generator.
(Murray has a "bad back", and Djokovic is distracted.)

3. Every player in the field struggles with Nadal because Nadal is
attacking the classic game in an unexpected way.

Federer is doing tennis a huge favor by making final after final to
face his nemesis. It is funny how many clods here never recognize
that.
