Notice that average ground stroke speed is not a "good" statistic, it
doesn't account heaviness of the ball and more importantly the average
mph really goes down if one uses slice a lot...so in that respect the
stat can reward one-dimensional play. Also the style of play can depend
on your opponent, one has to defend a lot against aggressive player
*AVERAGE GROUND STROKE SPEED*
Verdasco 73.8
Seppi 73.5
Berdych 73.1
Söderlin 72.6/69.9
Robredo 71.1
Nadal 69.5
Tsonga 69.5
Monaco 69.0
Roddick 68.5
Ljubicic 68.1
Murray 65.3
Now the next statistic, return of 2nd serve, is IMO a better
stat...since players usually do not use slice when returning 2nd serves.
On the other hand the quality of opponent's 2nd serve most likely has
effect on return
*AVERAGE 2ND SERVE RETURN SPEED*
Söderlin 72.0/67.9
Nadal 71.9
Berdych 71.5
Verdasco 71.5
Tsonga 68.3
Seppi 65.9
Monaco 63.7
Robredo 63.6
Ljubicic 62.3
Murray 61.2
Roddick 58.3
As far as I know, the hardest ground stroke in this tournament has been
112mph by Nadal.
very interesting - not that surprised to see verdasco up there.
roddick's speed also very interesting, and murray at 2nd bottom and
bottom - step it up boy! attack more!
all the best,

Where did you get these stats? They were showing average ground stroke
speeds on TV?

"Better" in what sense? Return of 2nd serve means they player is
pouncing on a weaker serve. The players who top this list can be
pretty much labeled as opportunists looking for cheap points.

I don't think it's that much of a big deal at all. An average ground
stroke speed tells us whether the player plays at a faster tempo or
not. Whether he hits flatter or whether he is more prone to use
moonballs and slice. If this is probably an average over a big number
of shots, with all kinds of shots involved, then I think this is a
good indicator of a player's tempo.

No, the stat itself cannot "reward" anything. It's just an interesting
piece of statistics from which we can perhaps deduce something useful
or just compare with our own observations and gut feelings.

But if this is truly an "average" over many, many matches against
different kinds of opponents, then that wouldn't matter. They would be
smoothed away. Are these average speed stats from one match or several
matches?
At tennistv.com there's a separate window during matches that shows some
hawk-eye data.
Yes, it measures tempo/playing style - rather than ability to hit hard.
...but of course one would need more stats over several matches for it
to be accurate.
For example Nadal had average ground stroke speed of around 74mph
somewhere after 1st set against Berdych. In 2nd set he had to slice a
lot from his backhand which brought the average down a lot.
> Are these average speed stats from one match or several

As I pointed out in op, these are stats from 1 match only - except for
Söderling you can see two numbers, from his last 2 matches.
Better in sense to define how fast players strike their topspin shots.
And of course a great indication on player's aggressiveness on 2nd serve.
Yes, that guy hits hard...even reckless. Probably he didn't slice much
in his match either, saw only bits and pieces from the match data was from.
> roddick's speed also very interesting, and murray at 2nd bottom and

It appears that indeed Murray was a junkballer in his match against
Söderling...but have to notice pattern of this particular match where
the data was from - It was against Söderling and Andy had to defend a
lot, often times he didn't really have a chance to step it up. But yes,
we could all see that his game was a bit soft in that one...
Great statistics... do you also have some info on Federer and Gonzales
avg groundstroke speeds (and also upper speeds when they go with their
forehands for that matter)?
Thanks
Thanks.
Federer(against Serra)
Groundstroke: 68.5
return of 2nd serve 59.9
Federer is one of the few players who often uses slice when returning
2nd serve. I don't have stats for Gonzo.
Nalby(some match in Miami)
73.1
72.1
I saw 169km/h forehand from Verdasco at Monte Carlo final. Other than
that a hard shot would be around 150kmh, even by the big guns. So
Nadal's 180kmh would still be the hardest I've seen since Indian Wells.
Also I recall Karlovic hit some near-Nadal ripper.
Wow, thanks again for the valuable insight.
Also, how much insight and data you can get about ball speed on this
separate window that displays these infos?
For instance, do they show how fast was that killer forehand that
wasn't a winner, but was returned shortly for the winner thereafter?
That's also interesting because sometimes the fastest possible stroke
on a match is not necessarily a winner.
Thanks again for your insight.
