Steffi the most popular female player in history?

He seems to be right.
Everybody likes Steffi, she is definitely the most revered player of
yesteryear. And today's players are no competition either, most of
them will be forgotten in 10 years from now.
I know only two persons who don't like Steffi - Navratilova and Courty/
Ulie.

People's list of 100 most beautiful people that always
contains mostly 'celebrities' currently in the
news in the US and some usual suspects like actors
and actresses and models.
If they polled male/ female tennis players, I would be
surprised if Kim Clijsters gets voted the most popular.
Martina N's political and cultural views upset a lot of
conservatives just as Margaret Court's views upset most
liberals. So somebody like Steffi who basically has no
views on anything will be considered less controversial.
If they asked female tennis players about who has
contributed to women's tennis, I am sure BJK & MN
would be the two names they will take and Steffi's
name may be among the bottom 5. She did absolutely
nothing for women's tennis - just played, won, pocketed
the money and left.

Before her only Americans, a few Brits, and gays followed the WTA.
With her women's tennis became fashionable in Europe, Asia, and among
heterosexual men. Come on, if you had admitted in, say, 1985 that you
were watching women's tennis, you know what the boys would have
thought of you. All that changed with Steffi Graf. She was respected
among the top male sports stars of time, too. Compare that to the
Evertilova or the current era.
