Answer:
I just don’t think it’s about two guys any more. It’s about eight
guys. I mean, you’ve got Ferrero, Nalbandian . . . there’s just too
many good players. It’s harder to be dominant. It was also pretty hard
to be dominant when I was playing.
I disagree. Roddick and Federer, in my opinion, are at a different
level then the rest of the guys.
Federer, yes. Roddick? No. Coria and Moya have had better years than Roddick
and Moya missed the Oz Open.
Dave
JCF is up there too.

US Open finalist, beating Hewitt and Agassi along the way, is average? Ok.
Good bye to the clay season,

In the Whisper 'clay is not real tennis' camp. Keep dreaming.
An injured Hewitt, I might add (hip flexor). Normally, a fast hard court
favors Lleyton. I didn't mind, though, because a) it was Ferrero and b) it
set up an awesome match with Agassi!
Dave
If that is the case then Federer is in a league of his own, he has got a
slam, master cup, 2 Super 9 victories and
2 tier 2 victories compare to Roddick's victory of 1 super 9 victory and 3
minor tournament victories.

Sure, just finals of last USO... pretty average...

Yep, & Roddick will take over any minute now. Pencil his name into Wim/USO
trophies right now....
He's probably a notch below - Roddick highlighted the difference in USO
final, & he still hasn't recovered......
1 good HC result in career, and got destroyed in finals against that "no
talent" (as u call him) roddick. :-)
bob
?
jcf hasn't even been competitive in the last 7-8 months..who's talking about
federer?
bob
if federer wins wimbledon, will you stop saying this crap or will roddick
still be far superior
Fererro likes Rebound Ace to US Hardcourts. But he's not bad indoors,
either.
Let's not forget he defeated Federer 64 46 64 in the Madrid semis. That's a
pretty fast court.

Didn't Ferrero also reach the Masters Cup final indoors? Shanghai 2002,
iirc.

Yep, after a great win over Moya in the semis.
But that was a slow hard court, not lightning quick like Flushing Meadows.
Still counts in my book, though.
Dave : >
Clay 'can' be real tennis on rare occasions - maybe 5% of the time...?
He predicted Roddick would win Australian (looking at Hops' chart).
Fed's slice on grass is so tough. Think that gives him the edge, but
he'll probably have to get through Henman, who he also has losing
record against.
Fed will beat Henman easily (3 sets). Mark my words.
Who is the "him" here? I look like Federer, but he's not in the same
half of the draw as Henman, so "get through" doesn't make sense. Both
Fed and Roddick have a losing record against Henman, so that isn't a
clue either.

jeez, he hasn't retired yet. Have some dignity, man! : )
Nalbandian injuries are killing him. Despite of the time out of the
courts when he returns makes finals or semis. The level he was playing
along AO was amazing, he returned and maked Rome F and FO Semis.
He might be no. 2 or 1 if he were able to play the whole tour.
He shoulda at least made the final - that was a fluke loss to Safin -
Roddick would win it 4/5 if they played over....
Yes, if he gets past Karlovic........ : )
I like Nalbandian a lot, but he even would make a poor No. 2 player. He just
doesn't know how to win tournaments.
Dave
You're shameless.

Safin just lost to nobody in 1st rd Wimbledon - that's his normal level, AO
was clearly a colossal fluke.....

He shoulda made final - & maybe give Fed a real match in final. Safin's
just a dumb spoiler who got lucky one time....
Roddick lost to nobody at Roland Garros - that's his normal level, US was
clearly a colossal fluke......

That the guy who sqeaked through 7-6 in 5th set in rd 3...?
Oh, yeah, I agree. Didn't complete my thoughts, was really talking
about possible Roddick / Henman semi, that should be a good one as
Roddick is 1-3 against him.
Um yeah and Federer is 1-6 against Henman, so I'm not ready to take any
bets, especially on Tim's strongest surface.
Nemanja
Got lucky twice. (You may recall the dumb spoiler waxing Sampras in
straight sets at the US Open.)
it's over hops. we all know it. i expect karen to pay.
bob
yes, on one day he was..for the other 3649 days of previous 10 yrs, he was
not.
bob
??? They played twice before that USO - once Pete won easily (when Marat was
18-yearr old), next time (at Canadian open) Safin won.
They played four times after that final - tied.
What's your point ?
14 slams v 1
Henman couldn't beat Sampras at W, so what makes you think he has a chance
in hell vs. Federer?
;)
Yep, no use delaying the inevitable. Might as well bite the bullet now..
... except that was his second AO final..
Didn't Safin beat Sampras at AO semis?
He have to get more experienced, he's still young.
He's already beaten Fed at Wimbledon, so it's a no-brainer. But true, he
never came close to beating Sampras at Wim....
Didn't Henman beat Federer at W after Federer had beaten Sampras?
:)
Yes, & as Henman was incapable of beating Pete, this tells us Pete was way
past his best - losing to a guy who Henman beat....? Please....
Sorry, why do I owe you $100.00. Please explain.
I know. I posted without previewing, when I read it I couldn't figure
out what I meant either!
I think Fed has the edge over both in the final, even though he has
losing record to Henman. I think it would be easier for him to beat
Roddick thoug.
Roddick doesn't seem to have much slice.
Actually, it's 2-6. But Federer has a Wimbledon trophy, Henman doesn't.
sure, you forgot. after agassi's last GS final, whenever that was, you bet
me 100$ that agassi would make another GS final, i said he wouldn't. i think
it's pretty obvious he won't. but i'll be patient for the money til andre
makes it official.
bob
>
yes, i guess sampras won 'some', safin won 'some'.. they're equal :-)
bob
I dont know if US was a fluke but hes certainly not the great player
that everybody thinks.
It wasn't a fluke, and Roddick is a great player. I'd still take Safin over
him though.
I don't think slicing Fed to death is no.1 strategy for Roddick.... ; )
Check back next sunday & after USO........
Actually, it's 1-6, because the other loss is a retirement so we can't make
too much of that. And functionally it was 0-5 until this year, and it's 1-2
during Fed's hot streak, and 0-1 on grass, and 0-1 at Wimbledon
Nemanja
Fed absolutely pasted Tim at Indian Wells though... I was wondering
how the heck he had gotten so many matches off the guy.
Well, officially it's 2-6. And anyone who saw Fed play today had to
be scared.
54 minutes, maybe a record for a completed best of 5. And the
Wimbledon loss was 3 years ago.
"Roddick is a great player."
et tu, Hops, et tu?
Sure. Hard to get to #1 without being great.
Safin was far more deserverd no.1 than roddick was.
Safin was never yr-end No.1 - thank god. Apes don't deserve that
honour.....
What about tree-swinger Sampras?
edit: oh, I guess that was the "lucky one time" you meant. I thought
you meant he was lucky getting to the AO final... nevermind.
the same old lame joke about pete. hops you're usually better than that.
bob
Funny thing is, Sampras doesn't look anything like an ape.
Still, Sampras ruined a good chance to make men's tennis more interesting by
not shooting the shit back at Andre. We could have used a good old Mac/Jimmy
or Mac/Lendl type "i hate his guts" rivalry in the 90s...
Whole argument is pointless. Mental or physical attributes are irrelevant
.. only results on court matter. Safin would have deserved #1 in 2000 had
Agassi beaten Guga in ATP final, and Pete certainly deserved all his #1s.
Sampras is a class act. Sampras does resemble an ape, & Agassi a
monkey..........
Look in the mirror, Chim-Chim.
so what about Roddick ? in wich NOT deserved year end no.1 is he ?
