Club Update

This is David Rosenzweig and Henry Gosebruch from U. Penn. We
are writing in response to Sylvia's posting about the Harvard club. We
have some very interesting news to report ourselves. As of right now, the
club has 55 paid members. We meet Wednesdays from 7-9 and Sundays from
3-5. During the meeting times, Henry and I coach interested club members
free of charge (we are both USTTA (USATT) certified coaches). Club dues
are $5. We are using membership dues to fund trips to tournaments, etc.
We also received $400 from the Recreational Sports Dept. (after spending
one year convincing them that we are for real). In addition to the $400,
we got them to buy us 6 Butterfly barriers. We have a listserver and post
the ladder that Henry and I maintain weekly. We have already run 2
student tournaments that were both very successful. This past weekend,
Henry and I really outdid ourselves!! We organized and ran an OPEN
tournament (non-USTTA) Saturday from 9 am till 6 pm. There were 6 players
over 2000. All in all, 42 players competed for $330 in prize money, part
of which came from local business sponsors. Entry fees were $5, and the
top 24 players were guaranteed to break even. Top prize was $60 + trophy.
We ran 8 RR groups in two shifts - one shift of 4 groups at 9am and one at
12. The top two finishers in each group advanced to a SE draw, while the
third place finisher in each group won $5. We ran the tournament on 4
tables with Stiga nets and ran video tapes of the World Championships to
keep players who were waiting entertained. But there were also a great
interest in the matches that were going on since the competition was so good.
There were some points that had the crowd of about 30 cheer wildly. All
the prizes were presented at the awards ceremony at the very end by the us
and the sponsors. All in all, the tourney ran as smooth as could be with
no disputes and everyone having a really great time competing. The

In addition, we will be beginning LNITT matches in January. Based on
the success of this tournament and the huge player demand, we are also
planning on running a USTTTA sanctioned tournament in January.
More good news: Henry and I were contacted by the University Museum.
As part of their Chinese New Year celebration, they have requested that we
put on an exhibition for 5 hours on Sat. Jan 22. They expect roughly 2000
people will be attending the activities at the Museum that day. They are
paying us $50 each (all though we did not ask for money).
