Does anyone know why there is no prize money in the World
Championships?
Certainly it cannot be that there is not enough money for prizes.
The cost to present the games are costly and funded many ways, ie.
corporate sponsership, ittf, etc.
Certainly a $50,000 or $100,000 prize could be put aside for the
winner.
Additionally, when the championships are held in Asian countries where
it is particulary poplular, it should be much easier to obtain prize
money.
These highly skilled and dedicated athletes don't get so much as a
dime for winning the world's highest honor.
What a load of crap!

it's a big mistake for ITTF not to give out major prize money for the world
championships.

I remember when golf was a rich man's sport. Well actually it still is. But
the point is that it is greatly more popular than 10 years ago. I think the
big prize money played a major role in this vast increase in popularity.

One thing people talk about is prize money. They like to speculate how much
tiger woods can make per stroke. Some of the people speculating don't know a
driver from a pitching wedge.

Same goes in tennis. As the prize money got bigger, all kinds of people became
more interested.

I know it says shit for our society, but money does put value on things. If
people thought that the world champions of table tennis were playing for
500,000 dollars they would be interested to know who won.

Is the ITTF large enough to raise such a sum?

ps....this post doesn't mean that you can charge $20 admission to see the
finals of an american 4 star event.

2001 Wimbledon Men's Singles Champion (Goran Ivanesevic) - about $725,000
2001 Wimbledon Women's Singles Champion (Venus Williams) - about $670,000

Wimbledon raises prize money April 24,2001

Prize money at this year's Wimbledon championships will rise 5.5 per cent
to 8.5 million pounds ($12.23 million) but the men will still earn more
than top women players.

Organisers said on Tuesday that although the women's champion would
receive a pay hike of 32,500 pounds to 462,500, the men's champion would
earn 500,000 pounds, up from 477,500.

All England Club chairman Tim Phillips said: "We are recognising the
increased competitiveness at the top of the women's game by putting a
little bit more in from the quarter-finals onwards.

"We are consistent whether people agree with us or not. The one point I
would like to impress is that there have been seven different women's
champions in the last nine years.

"That is different than it used to be and reflects the greater depth in
the women's game now. Our prize money changes also reflect that greater
depth."

Geez, John... you're like, the "answer man". I've been going about things
all wrong...if I want to really get somewhere in life, have all of its
mysteries solved, I don't need experience or enlightenment; I just need
to ask John! :) Ok, I'll start: (1) How can we make hardbat popular?
(2) Are there really UFOs and alien life forms visiting earth? (3) What
is the meaning of life? (4) What can I do to get a date? I'm now
convinced that of all people on this Earth, YOU can answer these great
mysteries of time!!!

(2) Yes. Certain RSTT posters are evidence.

(3) 42

(4) They should be available in the produce section of your local

See what I mean? I ask for the meaning of life, and within 15 minutes,
John provides not only the meaning of "life", but also of "the universe
and everything"! Truly awesome. Also, I am relieved to hear that I don't
have to quit table tennis to get a date.

Alternate answer to (3): It's a Monty Python film.

You don't have to, but it probably couldn't hurt your chances...

Oops! I've seen a chink in the Answer Man's armor. Actually, "42"
comes from Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", not a
Monty Python film. Nevertheless, the irreverent humor of
"Hitchhiker's..." would probably appeal to any Monty Python fan...I
love 'em both!

Sorry Robert, he knew that. "The Meaning of Life" IS a Monty Python Film,
that's why he called it an alternate answer to 42. John is still the
answer-man, and no dents in the armor yet. Keep trying!
