Heating pool water with home AC exhaust heat - been done?

Has anyone seen or heard of a system for using the exhaust heat from
an AC or heat pump to heat the water in a swimming pool?

I was just thinking about my in-laws pool being near the outside unit
of their home AC, and how that heat was just being wasted.

Seems there would have to be a thermostat to make sure it wasn't
heated too much (if that is at all possible,) and a switch, either
manual or automatic, to not involve the pool water when the heat pump
is running the other way to heat the house, lest the pipes involve
freeze and burst.

Any insights?

Although it's a sound idea because you would be utilizing your pool as a cooling tower,
common sense dictates that the final electrical and mechanical aspects of it be closely
checked by your local inspectors. I suggest you talk with them first.

After working on pool heaters for the last 4 months......you would not add a
single degree to your pool unless its very small in size.

A 40000BTU heater needs to be left on for 4 hours to bring the temp from 65
to 68. Based on 5000 gallons

AC units run around the clock. For many people just a few degrees difference means
swimming or sitting by the poolside. It also could mean extending the swimming season a
few days or more. Much as to do with locality. Generally whole house AC units are much
higher than 40K.
A kitchen and dining area require 12K-15K alone.
But if the AC unit was only rated at 40K output other measures can be taken without much
thought. Using a solar cover at night can reduce thermal loss.
These are my reasons for taking a positive stance. Obviously we disagree and that's OK.

Extending the swimming is exactly why I put so much effort in pool heaters.
When your talking about A/C units BTUs is measured in cooling the heat you
get from the condenser is considerably less as far as BTUs are concerned.

I did my work based on heating BTUs and that was 40000. Still if left on
most of the time it would eventually come up to the desired temp.

I looked at some natural gas heaters today. They ranged from about 160 to 180 thousand
BTU. I guess 40K for a pool would be like trying to heat a cup of tea with a match. I'm
more inclined now to think running 2" diameter PVC pipe in an attic (so it can't be seen
from the street) would do a nice job of absorbing the heat build-up in the attic (cooling
the lower living quarters) and dumping the heat into the pool. I'd use a low volume pump
with a temperature sensor so the pump would only run when the water reached a temperature
greater than what could be provided with the same amount of electricity. I believe it
takes ten times more PVC to equal the heat transfer of a single unit of copper, but we all
know what happens when copper is used.
