Ein Drittel (one third) is also a measure of beer, mostly ordered for
young children or the elderly, it is the equivalent of ordering a
small Schopp or Chop ( or whatever it is called in South America).
So, can you make any predictions after one third of the season? Who
will win? Who will go down?

Bayern are 7 points up on Schalke and 11 points ahead of Dortmund. If
they had not lost to Bayer and Bate they would be undefeated and
everyone would be going on about them being the best Bayern team in
the history of the Universe. At the other end Furth and Augsburg are
about 6 points away from safety at the bottom, so they have to be
getting relegated this season? Yeah that is a good projection to
make, except that Augsburg were in this position last year at this
time, along with Freiburg and Hamburg and all those teams are still
here?

If i was to project Bayern as the winner this season, it would not be
based upon points accumulated after one third of the season, it would
be based upon the return of Super Mario!!!! Yes! Use the N_T is as
good as mine now! Super Mario is back! He scored 4 goals in a
friendly yesterday for Bayern, apparently bursting a ball with one of
his shots! Seriously, he did, i read that somewhere on the internet.

In less interesting news,Klaus Allofs has left Bremen to join
Wolfsburg as Sporting Manager or Director Manager or manger Sporting
Director or whatever the title is called? It should be more fun for
him there, Bremen no longer have money to spend, so now he can buy
wisely for VW, he wont be as much fun as Felix though. He also has to
pick a new coach, or will he make himself coach?

Hope he signs Hope Solo, that poor girly needs to get out Dodge
quickly, what happened to the sweet, innocent, nude posing, gold
medal winner? Hope, Hope gets her own Realty TV show, Actually I
hope, Hope is as quickly forgotten, as those USA girls, that beat up
the poor innocent Canadian girls in the Olympics this summer. Hope
Hope gets into Porn too, that would really help the womens game in
America. I figure Ballotelli and Barton will be getting into that
trade as well? Oh my, Soccer Moms over here are fainting in their
mini vans at an alarming rate!

The good news for the Bundesliga this week, is that none of the German
and Dutch players will be tired from playing friendlies during the
midweek, so it is not really a good week to pick upsets. Since I put
the boats away and turned off the water at the cottage, I should be
here and able to watch more weekend games now? This will really help
me with the predictions. That is until ice and snow appear and ice
fishing and snowmobiling and skiing season start. Believe it or not,
I am on a bit of a health kick lately, I started to play indoor
football a few weeks ago and i am not going out afterwards for a dozen
Drittels, errrrr, I mean Halves or Pints, nor am i eating pounds of
Chicken wings. I never really noticed the last time I was in Germany,
but can you order Chicken Wings at a Gasthaus or bar? I think it is
just a North American thing? Never had it back in my days. You know
the good old days, back when Falcao was a great singer, not a goal
scorer. Rock me Amadeus is the last great Austrian song I remember,
now they probably all listen to Justin Bieber and eat chicken wings
and Nacho's, while ordering from a drive through sitting in their
Chevrolet automobiles. Never had none of that back in my days!!!!!
We did have Eintracht Braunschweig in the bundesliga though and that
may just return next year? Sadly Falco will not.

No Friday Night Football this week

Dortmund - Fürth (Sa.)
Though a bunch of Dortmund players played in the midweek and they may
have one eye on the UCl game, they really should beat Furth. Then
again, I am not ready to dismiss Furth to the relegation heap yet, I
saw glimpses of hope from them lately. No not that Hope.
2-1

Frankfurt - Augsburg
I think this is a good time to pick Frankfurt's collapse?
1-2

Nürnberg - Bayern
Every game involving Bayern is some kind of Derby
0-3

Hannover - Freiburg
Interesting game, this one
3-3

Hamburg - Mainz 05
Both mainz and freiburg are quietly getting things done, they should
not be underrated
1-1

M'gladbach - Stuttgart
Going to go with lots of goals in this game
4-4

Leverkusen - Schalke 04
An interesting game, which may just decide if bayern can be projected
winners this season. I will project bayern winner of the Apertura
though.
2-2

Bremen - Düsseldorf (So.)
Bremen need this win
2-1

Hoffenheim - Wolfsburg
The underachievers
2-2

Last year Augsburg had Luhukay and a plan. And promotion euphoria.

I always thought him and Schaaf were inseparable? I think that
after yet another run of mediocre Werder results Schaaf might join
him there?

Why eat just the wings when you can have the entire chicken?

With three non-Bavarian Bavarian clubs in the league
trying to put a spoke into the wheels of the one true
Bavarian juggernaut it's inevitable.

yes

Do they not use the terms drittel and halbe or halber? Or is my
memory clouded by too many? Or maybe it was just grosse and kleine? I
am almost sure my Grandmother or the really elderly would always ask
for a drittel? Though i do seem to remember a seidl also being
used?
I am going back almost 30 years, so I may be wrong? In fact the last
time I was in Austria, Rock me Amadeus, was the big hit song. That
and the song that went" a da da da...", does that make any sense?

He seems to refer to the fact that a "Kleines Bier"
contains sometimes 0.33l (not in Munich, of course,
where "klein" means half a litre). But 0.25l are
more normal nowadays.

That's 0.5l, as I'm sure you know.

Schoppen. If you order "ein Schoppen Wein" , you get 0.25l of
wine. The Austrian equivalent is a "Viertele", I think. A small
Schoppen should be an "Achtel"
(...beim fnften Achtel plagt mich noch der Gewissensbi,
doch was soll's, wenn dieser Tag sowieso verschiss'n is....)

Only if the Gasthaus is a McDumb or a BurgerKing.

No, yes.

The term "Halbe" is quite common ("Trink ma noch a Hoibe, heast?"),
nobody uses "Drittel".

"Seidla" or "Seidel" is also used in Bavaria, and, of course,
the "Ma".

Trio.

Concerning the sense... well, it's sometimes hard to find, but
I'm sure it exists ;-)

'Halbe' is used, and so is the simple kleines/großes.
In the Deep South and Far East it's Krügerl/Seidl.

I don't know a third of the words on this list

Trio, Da Da Da? That's from 1982 though, Rock Me Amadeus
came out in 1986.

That should read I *know* a third of the words on the

0.3l in Austria. A source of perennial confusion!

But the South American chope that Binder alluded to is a
kind of beer, I think, while the French chope is a stein,
apparently. Confusing!

As it's Austria, it's almost always in diminutive (Achterl, Vierterl)!

I think Rock me Amadeus came out in the summer of 85, which makes
sense for my timeline, as I left in September of 85.

Yes. I think we had a discussion about "Schoppen" on this

Sure, but I think he really sings "Achtel". And I remember
two versions, one with "Achtel", one with "Viertel"...

Of course the 80s. I'm far too old to know anything more recent.
No. Very nice :-)

I missed these discussions, so I hope you don't mind me adding a couple of
some currency's cents to the debate.

What we call "chopp" or "chope" here in Brasil (and, at least according to
wikipedia, "fino" or "imperial" in Portugal) is this:

http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chope

It says that it indeed comes from the German word "Schoppen", which,
according to the page, means a half-litre cup? The English language version
of this page is Draught Beer (draft beer), while the German version calls it
Fassbier.

So, just to get things straight: if I order a Fassbier in a German-language
environment, will I get a chope? Or just a weird look from the bartender?
(as in, "you want a... what?")

"Schoppen" in Germany is used mainly for wine, and means
a quarter litre of wine normally.

You will get a chope. Though a German wouldn't say
"Ein Fassbier, bitte" but "Ein Bier vom Fass, bitte".

I do recall the previous Chope discussion, anyhow my recollection of
the meaning of Chope-at least from a Chilean perspective- is that is
is just a way to order a large glass of draught beer (.5l), usually a
Crystal, as that seemed to be the beer most likely on tap? But I dont
think it has anything to do with the type or kind of beer, I forget,
or probably never ordered any other size, but i just assumed that a
smaller glass was a mini chope?

As has been pointed out, the list of names for the various sizes and
type of beers in different districts/countries is well over a page
long, but if you walked into a bar and ordered a kleines or grosses
bier ( Small or large beer) you would be just fine. In most cases, if
you even said big or small beer in English, you would probably have no
problem either. The English word beer translates quite easily to the
German word bier, some might even say they sound the same.

It doesn't. It's essentially the same beer.

The only difference (that I'm aware of) is that the chope is fresher than
the corresponding beer, because it doesn't go through the whole preservation
processes they have at the later stages of beer production.

As a result chope spoils faster, and it has to be drank in a few days or so.
Which is not a problem at all, just tell me where it is and I'll do my best
to help out.

Why even bother? 3-0

This is the Saturday game on Eurosport2. Guess I'll have to watch
Liverpool - Wigan.

Pretty clear. 2-0

The classis Bayern-derby. 0-3

Another clear favouritte. 3-1

> Hamburg - Mainz 05

Mainz have won some games recently, but they've all been against teams
in crises. 2-1

> M'gladbach - Stuttgart

A nightmare to predict. Stuttgart have a very good record against
the other horseteam. 2-2

Dortmund is the team to watch out for, not Schalke. 2-1

I don't have much faith in Fortuna. 3-0

The unpredictabels. 1-1

A week (and a half) ago, isolated with no internet in my hotel room in
Murnau, I saw a TV segment on the drummer from Trio. He had blown everything
earned on that hit on drugs, and had been on Hartz IV for years. Now he's
a pensioner.

The original video:
http://youtu.be/lNYcviXK4rg
Any guesses on which city is shown in the background?
