[Guys, I missed my alarm call. I guess I am still wonky from the
flight. Unfortunately, I missed my beloved Spurs get a magnificent
debut draw at home against the Reds. I think they'll be fine, since
maybe the team chemistry was given a shock with the leaving of Michael
Owen, but I've no doubt they can do better than this in other matches.
Remember, we Spurs always play Liverpool "tough". At last we got a
draw for our play, which I can't say much since I only turned on telly
by miracle just before the Defoe goal. Hurrah! Anyway, here are SOME
of the scores today, and where you do not see a result to the right,
it means it's still being played]

Nothing. It was just the usual HSV away game.

I've just found out that Lucas Radebe has suffered a ruptured achilles and
has probably played his last professional match. This was to be the
testimonial season for probably the most consistent Leeds player of the last
20 years. 'The Chief' always seemed to play football with a smile on his
face and turned down lucrative moves to Manchester United and Roma to stay
at Leeds.

Final, 2-2. Scrappy, but reasonably alright derby game. Middlesbrough
look better than last year, but not by a whole lot. I think their defence
may let them down a little bit this year: Southgate is facing injury,
Riggot didn't look good and their left back (Parnaby?) doesn't look very
comfortable on the ball.

Newcastle will also be similar to last year, but that strike force of
Shearer/Bellamy/Ameobi/Kluivert looks excellent. I wasn't really
impressed with Jenas or Dyer this game.

Nice technical game, Benitez said Liverpool got tired in the second half,
which seems about right. They really dominated the first half and
probably should have been given two penalties off the young right back
(Izil?). I look to both these teams to play some nice high-level football
this year and rescue the EPL from the drudgery of the Southampton's and
Birmingham's. Kanoute is apparently headed out.

complete.

I always thought Boro's best characteristic were their defence. I may
be wrong this season...

Dyer has not impressed since 1997...Jenas looks as good as he, but
somehow isn't the real McGillicuddy either.

Ahh, for the days when the Saints were always threats to go down, and
somehow managed to avoid it. I had them surviving in my preview, but
not too sure after all.

Without Beattie, they are toast.

I'm not sold that Brum are that bad. Mediocre, perhaps, but not that
bad.

Is that so?? Surely we need someone to cover poor old Robbie Keane
since he's a fairly brittle man.

Everybody seems to have Boro 4-6th in their predictions, but I think
about 10th is where they'll end up.

A good spell on the bench would do both of them some good. When Bowyer
gets back I think he should get a run partnering Butt in the middle.

Why "surprise"? Like I said in the Predictions threat, they suck.

I like Birmingham. They're "destructive" but not boring in the way
Southampton are.

I am no expert on the Premiership, but this game was horrible. My
impression is that if that is all the Spurs can do, they are
relegation material. Not that Liverpool impressed me a lot either, but
at least they were passable.

Its pretty representative of the Premiership.

Hmm, and today was the day I drug my old Bayern Munich '99 jersey out of the

Ouch to Liverpool. Well done to Tottenhan, but it's still just a tie.

I'm a Virgo as well! 22 next Sept 13th!!!

Vic, have you considered posting a "Soccer Sunday" of some sort. As a lot of
results get left out. I do very much so appreciate you posting these results,
as I like the format and it saves me lots of time ;).

It is, mostly because Hertha are usually pushovers in Munich, though
they always play us tough in Berlin. But this time they came out hard
in the first 15 and may feel they "only" got one goal. Bayern put out
their traditional big push playing toward the South Curve at the
beginning of the second half, scoring on a nice through ball from Scholl
to Santa Cruz on the right of the box, and a nice low diagonal back pass
to Makaay who first timed it along the ground to far post. But Bayern
lost steam around 60' and had to fight off two more good chances for
Hertha. The 1-1 was a decent reflection of the match in all, even if
Hertha were slightly closer to a win then we were.

We still don't have nearly enough fight, same as last year.

Well, is there any one team that does well against Bayern at home?

I know Sven always despairs (well that's my word, he might use
something less melodramatic) when HSV have to play Bayern away.

I truly miss watching the Bundesliga on FSWE. They would show the
early matches on Friday (as it was then) or Saturday, about 2 or 3
years ago.

Rob Maxwell informs me that GolTV might have something to say about
that this season -- in terms of my catching the Germans in action.

Is it mainly due to injuries that Mehmet hasn't been the talent for
Germany originally thought of? He must be getting on in years too, but
he and Babbel share a curious trajectory of should've beens, no?

(Yes, I know -- Babbel truly is lucky to be playing football still)

>We still don't have nearly enough fight, same as last year.

Ah well. *eg*

Which reminds me, where did Malte's Zonenliga report get to. I'll try
to Google, since I think I saw it on Mailgate but it didn't appear in
the Berlin Uni-server.

There's not much of a difference between playing themhome or away...

It's a question of character, too. He was labelled as 'eternal talent'
at some point in his career, and rightfully so.

You mean down here? Lots of teams (eg, Koeln, almost any Ruhr team,
Stuttgart) usually even if not always play us tough here.

HSV are another one usually easy here, with more exceptions than
Hertha.

Good luck... I usually don't pay attention, but there is sometimes an
announcement of BLiga on US TV on our mailing list. I'll try to
remember to post that here next time I see it.

Recently, it is injuries. Before, when he was fitter, he had Haessler
in the way. Like with Kirsten, the Germany side's game didn't suit him
as much, or when it did he had someone else in the way, or didn't get a
long enough chance to work his way in. Sometimes that is more bad luck
than the player (Kirsten's case IMHO shows this).

For HSV usually not, as you are unusually weak against us at home
(the contrast to Hertha or Stuttgart or until recently Lautern is large).

Right when he got his head together, it was Haessler's indian summer and
then after that it was injuries.
