I'm glad to proclaim the Unofficial RSS Players of the Season 2007-08
(9 voters):
Goalkeeper: Casillas
Defenders: Vidic (the only one to keep on the award from 2006-07)
Midfileder: Ribery
Forward: Cristiano Ronaldo
Overall: Cristiano Ronaldo

Other positions but first are not completely meaningful, i.e. it's
absolutely not sure that the second midfielder is the second best
midfielder for the RSS collective mind; but here are the results:

Goalkeeper
7 Casillas
2 van der Sar

Defender
3 Vidic
2 Sergio Ramos
1 Clichy, Daniel Alves, Evra, Rio Ferdinand

Midfielder
4 Ribery
3 Fabregas
2 Sneijder
1 Cristiano Ronaldo, Juan Arango

Forward
6 Cristiano Ronaldo
2 Torres
1 Villa

Overall
7 Cristiano Ronaldo
1 Casillas, Daniel Alves, Fabregas

My two cents:

- Just like last time, there wasn't a great agreement about defenders
(you can't judge them from goals scored, they are less present in
media). This time, the race for the midfielder title too was close.

- As usual in such polls, an offensive player (look, I wrote neither
"attacking midfielder" nor "forward"... :) BTW, in 2006-07 too
Cristiano Ronaldo was voted both as MF and as FW, but then more as MF
than as FW) was judged the best overall. More, winning silverware
helps: Casillas won the Euro and La Liga, Vidic and Ronaldo won
Champions League and Premier League, Ribery won Bundesliga.

- One year ago, Ronaldo received 3 votes (out of 13 voters) as best
player overall: some of you already saw him as the top one.

- No player from Serie A received a vote. Only Alves from outside
Europe (Euro year...).

- A seasonal (not annual) award is more meaningful, at least for
European football.

I always regret not being able to vote for more Serie A players in
these polls, but outside of the Euros, the World Cup, and periodic UCL
matches I just don't get to see any of them. I'd even considered
voting for Buffon, but then considered that until the Euros hadn't
seen him play since 2006.

That would be moi. Also Arango.

A poll with 9 participants has no meaning.

YOU can look Ronaldo in the eye and tell him that. :-)

Of course (still, I bet that Casillas (GK) and C. Ronaldo (FW and
overall) would have won even if more RSSers would have voted). You
know, what I meant was "a seasonal poll with 9 participants is more
meaningful than an annual poll with 9 participants".

I am sure Arango would have won if more Venezuelans had voted.
Cheers.

I think Cesc Fabregas was fabulous this season. Ronaldo scored goals
and had some great games, but Cesc was steady. If he continues to
develop normally and escapes injuries, he will be one of the greats.
Heart, brain and skill, all in one. Casillas has already done enough,
of course, and should get some prize for many years of service at top
level. Another player who was outstanding this year is Mascherano. I
know he will never make it to the FIFA hall of fame, but he is a hell
of a player. He is also fearless, a quality necessary for greatness.

Best,

smt
