Did he really? But as we all know from Romario: he says this today,
he says that tomorrow. So probably he knows by now that he's better than
Van Basten.

.......and if John Clark's "tackle" on David Robertson had been a bit
more precise, then young Robbo would certainly have been well on his
way to *the* Los Angeles clinic for major surgery, thus joining the Hall of
Fame of Rangers players who have had a stint there (Ian Durrant, Oleg
Kuznetsov, Brian Reid, Colin Scott). However, "tackle" of the weekend
must be the one made by a Dundee player on Hibs goalkeeper Chris Reid which led
to the goalie being stretchered off. The Dundee player only received a
yellow card but a red would have been justice. Dundee are fast becoming a
team of cluggers and Simple Simon has the cheek to say it was a mis-timed
tackle !!

Footnote:: Did you not see Dick'n'Duncy sharing a laugh after the tackle ?
Just another friendly game...........

I think cases like this should lead to players being punished after the match
is over when a ref. has been too stupid/biased/whatever to do so during the
game. I saw both tackles, and if an Argentinian or such had done them people
would be saying he wasn't fit to be allowed onto the pitch again.

1 ) The player should've got a red card as well.

2 ) Since the ball is not in play, the attacker should ask the ref if he
could touch the ball. The ref should use "common sense". If he sees
that the shooter is trying to ice the goalie, or delay time, he
+ shoul d receive a yellow card, but the penalty is still taken.

I didn't get to a game this weekend.

Cork City moved to the top of the table after beating Limerick 1-0 in a
thriller at Rathbane. Both side played well and ahd good chances. Declan
Roche scored the only goal after 20 minutes.

2 home defeats for Derry and Bohs made it a great day for Cork. Tom McNulty
scored the only goal as Dundalk won in Dalymount. Shels won comfortably 2-0 in
Derry.

Shamrock rovers continued their poor run drawing 0-0 at home to Sligo. Rovers
finished the game with 10 men as Peter Eccles was sent off. Josh Moran
gifted Waterford their first ever win in Bray while Drogheda comfortably
disposed of a demoralised St Pats side.

These are the results from week 26 of the league in IRELAND

Bohemians 0-1 Dundalk
Bray Wanderers 0-1 Waterford
Derry City 0-2 Shelbourne
Drogheda United 2-0 St. Patricks Athletic
Limerick 0-1 Cork City
Shamrock Rovers 0-0 Sligo Rovers

Ireland 2 Wales 1

Ireland snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with a 2-1 win over Wales
on Wednesday night. Ireland fielded a reserve side while Wales were short
a few regulars.

Wales dominated the early exchanges and took the lead after 10 minutes. Packie
Bonner failed to hold a shot and Mark Hughes scored from the rebound. The
makeshift defence had been upset by the departure of David O'Leary with a head
injury. Roy Keane switched to centre back beside Brian Carey. Ronnie Whelan
came on for O'Leary and showed that he still has much of his class if not his
fitness. He lasted until half-time. John Byrne and Tony Cascarino had
chances in the first half but Wales deserved their interval lead.

Wales made the fateful mistake of replacing Eric Young with his Crystal Palace
team-mate Chris Coleman. Young had comfortably contained Cascarino and
had exorcised the memory of the night in Wrexham 2 years ago when Niall Quinn
embarrassed him. The Welsh defence looked very vulnerable in the second
half. Alan McLoughlin ran at the defence after 47 minutes and was hauled
down by Coleman. David Kelly smashed the penalty against the bar. This
compunded a wretched night for the Newcastle player and he was later replaced
by Tommy Coyne. Ireland looked more and more thretening as the game wore
on but most of the fans sensed it was not going to be our night. The Welsh
fans continued to outsing a strangely muted home crowd.

With 15 minutes remaining the breakthrough finally came, John Byrne shot was
saved by Neville Southall but substitute Kevin Sheedy dispatched the rebound
to the empty net. Suddenly there was a new purpose about Ireland. 4 minutes
later Liam O'Brien tried a free kick from 30 yards. His superb strike was
brilliantly saved by Southall but the ever alert Tommy Coyne was first to
the rebound. Slaven and Sheedy could ahve added another couple in the last
10 minutes. Neville Sothall was substitued with a few minutes left and he
left the field to a huge ovation from the Irish fans. He proved yet again why
he is rated one of the top keepers in the world.

It was a good win for Ireland although it was a pointless exercise. Roy
Keane added to his growing reputation. The other regular Packie Bonner
disappointed but he was playing in front of a makeshift defence. Chris Morris
and Eddie McGoldrick both looked ill at ease. Brian Carey looked clumsy at
centre back and has a lot to learn. John Byrne was the best of the midfield
players. liam O'Brien is a lovely footballer but he drifts in and out of
games. Cascarino did OK but Kelly was poor. Tommy Coyne again looked sharp
and the Celtic striker will probably be ont he bench against Northern Ireland.

Albania 1 Northern Ireland 2

Northern Ireland kept their slim hopes of qualifying alive with a hard fought
victory in Tirana. Jim Magilton scored after 14 minutes and alan McDonald
made it 2-0 after 38 minutes. Albania came much more into the game in the
second half. Demulari missed a penalty and Tommy Wright kept the Albanians
at bay. Rakli finally scored a consolation goal seconds from the end. This
was a good win for Northern Ireland but they need to pick up points in
Dublin and Seville to have any chance of qualifying.

The following is from memory

I read a article in yesterdays Los Angeles Time
about the sales of World Cup tickets.
30 % of all stadium seats were allocated to
the first inital sales package Alan Rothensberg
says that sales were much better than expected.
Infact he says that for some stadiums they had sold out
the initail alotment of 30% (RFK, Foxboro) and they
were alocating more seats to the privite sales in those
staduims
he also said that the large staduims (ROse Bowl, Stanford)
still had seats available

The previous poster has a point. We want to keep the flow as smoothly as
possible.

Believe me, it is the end of the world :). Why break the game into
quarters ? Will it add more attack to the game ? I doubt it. However, I
have no doubt we will see more TV commercial if we adopt the changes. Of all
the rule changes being thrown around, this is the most "Americanized". It will
change football forever, and for no foresee benefits except maybe more TV
revenues.

Unfortunately Romario is also a player who causes arguments everywhere as well.
It was noticable in Brasil's game against Germany that Renato refused to pass
the ball to Romario. The Brasilian coach threw Romario out of the squad for
causing so much unrest.

He's a great player but you have got to bend your team for him and not all
coaches are prepared to do that.

> Am I the only one on this planet who understands that Romario is a better

I don't wnat to get into a Romario vs Van Basten argument but Van Basten has
got to be the most overrated player of his generation. OK he is a very good
striker but it's crazy to put him up beside the great players like Cruyff,
Platini and even Gullit (in his glory days). One European player of the year
title would have been enough but three is crazy. In my opinion at this moment
Bergkamp is better than Van Basten.

Just adding on about Romario.

I have been getting a lot of mail about Argentina this, Argentina that.
Sergio et all, the only reason why Argentina has won so many Libertadores Cups,
+ is that those championships did not mean much before in Brazil. Sure, we had
+ the Santos of Pele, but that team could not help not win. Whatever they
+ played they
won. Other Brazilian teams are playing the Brasilian championship during
Libertadores cup, so since winning the Brasilian championship was so much
+ important than the Libertadores, and since they already play twice a week,
+ they do not
want to risk their players playing so many games a week. When the Libertadores
starts, they play games on Sundays, tuesdays, Fridays, Mondays, Thurdays. It is
a nightmare, so clubs did not use to risk it. They would field their reserve
+ players during the first round, and if they went on, then they would get
+ serious about it. This mentality started to change on late 70's, early 80's
+ when we had
the great teams of Cruzeiro, of Minas Gerais, the great Flamengo of Zico and
Junior, and the Gremio of Rio Grande do Sul, of Renato Gaucho at its best. These
teams saw that if they win the Libertadores, they could win the World
+ Interclubs, and that meant money. It is true that Argentinian teams have won
+ the most, but
since early 80's, who have been the winners? Just of the top of my head I have
Flamengo twice, Gremio once, then Olympia has won a few times, then Nacional de
Medellin, Sao Paulo, etc. I do not see many Argentinian teams there.
This problem with brasilian teams is because of its organizers. They are
crazy. They have teams playing 70-80 games a year. There is no way they can do
great.

Now, about Romario, which is what I was going to write about in the first
+ place.
I remember Romario when he was playing for Vasco da Gama of Rio. He was
+ always top scorer, but never fancy. He was very efficient, but we had Careca
+ in great shape,
.. So Romario never really got a chance. Then, the South America Cup of 1991(?)
was played in Brazil. Brazil fielded a great team. They started slow, being
+ booed
by the fans in Bahia, and Lazarone was strugling. Than they went to play in Rio,
before a full Maracana. They had Bebeto, and Romario up front. I do not remember
Careca playing then. They played a great match against Argentina in the semis(?)
or finals(?). ( I think the finals was against either Argentina or Uruguay),
+ and that is when Lazarone got the support of everyone. (sic!) Romario and
+ Bebeto
played great, and Romario had this play that I will never forget. He got a ball
crossed from the left side. He chested just outside the box. Without letting
+ the ball hit the ground, hit put the ball over the Argentine defender, chapeu
+ or
sombreiro, the second defender came and he did the same thing, and about the
+ penalty mark, he shot it and missed just wide to the left. It was a great
+ play, and
the great thing about was just hearing the crowed silence when the play happened
and the noise and silence in between. It was great. That is when I knew that
Romario and Bebeto would be great players in the cup. Then disaster stroke it.
Romario had his leg broken just months before the cup. He could not play, and
then disaster stroke again. Lazarone did not play Bebeto at all. Just a few
+ minutes against Costa Rica, and after Argentina scored against Brazil, Bebeto
+ came in for about 10 minutes. And I do not care whether you are Argentine or
+ not, you
should few ashamed of the WC 92 way of playing. It was disgraceful for futebol
that a team playing like that could get to the finals. I do not care whether I
am Brazilian or not, when Brazil plays like shit, I say so. I am behind them,
but if they play like shit, I admit it.
Therefore, I think Romario should be playing, but I respect the coaches
position. We are not there to hear all that shit coming out of Romario's mouth,
and you can only relate if you have played in a team with a wanna-be superstar
who thinks everyone is wrong and he is rigth.

Brasilian teams did great this year. Sao Paulo won the Sao Paulo
+ Championship, the hardest in Brazil. The Libertadores, and the World Cup
+ Interclubs.
Cruzeiro won the Recopa, or Libertadores winners cup. Atletico of Minas Gerais
won the Conmbol, which I have no idea what it is, but is an international
+ tournament, and Flamengo of Rio, and Inter of Porto Alegre are back in the
+ Libertadores
this year, with Sao Paulo who will join them in the second round. So let us wait
and see what happens, before saying that Argentina will be the next WC
+ cahampions, and lets stop leaving in the past.

Go Brasil !!!!!

Go Palmeiras !!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Cheers,
Henrique Silva

This might seem like an odd question but....

Does anyone know why Tottenham Hotspur shares rose by 14 points on the
Stock Market yesterday (from 90p to 104p, an increase of more than 15%).
I naturally assumed it meant that Spurs had sold a player for some
humungous sum, or got some planning permission, or some such. But the
only news I could find was that David Howells will miss the rest of the
season! While this may or may not be good news for the company, it's
not that big a deal!!! The shares have been creeping up by a point
every week or so for much of this year and now this big jump. The
business pages say that Spurs' interim results are due later this week,
so perhaps there was a leak (unlike our watertight defence!) I thought
it might be something to do with Amstrad but not much happened to their
shares. Could it be the Premier League sponsorship deal with Bass?

Whilst getting off a train at Sheffield, I almost walked straight into
Jack Charlton, the Ireland team manager. The train was going to Newcastle
and I'm wondering if anyone knows who he might have been going to see.
This sighting occurred at about midday last Saturday, if you can think of
which match he was going to see.

The most annoying aspect of this I think is the attitudes of some referees.
If Llewellyn had shown dissent or swore at the ref. or linesman he would
undoubtedly have been sent off. Now, because he ONLY ended Anthony Smith's
season, and nearly his career, he was told by the ref, "Once more and your
off"!! It seem some of them (refs) think it's worse to kick a player off the
park than have their authority questioned or undermined in any way. This is
absolutely ridiculous. There has got to be more thought given to prefessional
refs., possibly ex players, who know that players careers are more important
than referees egos.
I disagree with you wanting players punished after the game is over though.
I think this will lead to too many serious repercussions that will only be
detrimental to the game. With the amount of money being bandied about in the
game nowadays, surely professional referees, with some accountable body
running them, is the way forward.

OK, I was a bit OTT, but something must be done about standards (or double
standards) of refs. Making them accountable is a good idea, you are in most
other jobs.

I wonder what Richie Pitt or Bobby Park think when they see tackles like that!

----- MEXICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE: FIRST DIVISION NEWS -----

29th WEEK SCORES (20-22/FB/93)

VERACRUZ VS LEON 0 - 1

MONTERREY VS ATLANTE 1 - 2

First defeat at home for The Gang. Luis Miguel Salvador
scored both for the Iron Colts and became the new scoring
leader.

ATLAS VS MORELIA 1 - 1

The Foxes were uncapable to beat 'Tota's tribe. Trailing
0-1 early in the first half, Atlas put more pressure in
the second period. Luis Flores made the equalizer.

TOLUCA VS PACHUCA 2 - 3

It was it for Toluca's coach Jose Valtonra who got fired
after the game. The Sausage Makers have made only two
points in the last ten games. A golden victory for Pachuca
who keeps the pace with Santos and Queretaro on Highway to Hell.

GUADALAJARA VS U. DE G. 1 - 1

This was the good-bye game for Javier 'Vasco' Aguirre
who will now be assistant of Miguel Mejia Baron in
the national team. Like in last week game against U.A.T.
the Holy Flock saw the victory fly away with five minutes
left. They are still trailing Atlas by three points
searching desperately for a place in the playoffs.

PUEBLA VS U.A.T. 1 - 1

Tragedy at Cuauhtemoc Stadium. The worst team in the
tournament (3 points in 14 away games) came alive
with a draw against Lapuente's boys. Puebla is now
trailing both America and U.N.A.M. by three points
trying to get a wild card spot.

QUERETARO VS U.A.G. 0 - 0

U.N.A.M. VS CRUZ AZUL 1 - 0

David Pati~o buried the Blue Machine. The Cougars are
the best second round team and are looking forward to
reaching Leon Green Paunches in the second place of
Group IV.

SANTOS VS AMERICA 1 - 3

Tough victory for the Eagles in a sold-out at Corona
Stadium. The situation is getting more and more diffi-
cult for the Torreon squad combined with Pachuca's win
and Queretaro's draw.

NECAXA VS U.A.N.L. 2 - 2

Necaxa started the game as if they were to blow the
Tigers out with goals by Vernuncio and Garcia Aspe.
However, U.A.N.L. answered with a header by Carlos
Mu~oz and a beatiful goal by 'Abuelo' Cruz. Excellent
campaign for both sides. Necaxa keeps the first
overall standing, and the Tigers are solid in the
first place of group three.

The key to the above is to distinguish between "intentional" and "deliberate".
In soccer referee circles, "intentional" means just exactly what is written
in the Laws of the Game. However, "deliberate" carries a somewhat stronger
meaning. It implies "malice aforethought". It is sort of the difference
between "deliberate" "first degree murder", planned ahead of time and
disregarding the consequences, versus "intentional" "second degree murder",
done on the spur of the moment, but still against the rules.

It is possible to quibble over how long ahead of time a player might have
planned for committing a "routine" handball at midfield, and over how
little time a player might have had before reacting against a certain goal
with a "spur-of-the-moment" handball. This judgment, if I understand your
point above, is exactly what you were referring to when you objected that
not all intentional handballs should result in a caution. You are correct:
not all intentional handballs deserve a caution, but all DELIBERATE
handballs do deserve a caution, or perhaps even a send-off.

I just watched the USA - Russia game at Stanford this weekend which ended in
a scoreless draw. It struck me that the field appeared to be smaller than
FIFA regulation size, especially in width. Was I imagining this?

Since most American stadiums have a turf area suitable for American Football,
which requires a smaller field, is this a problem for the World Cup next year?
Or has FIFA and the USSF addressed the issue?

thanks/NIX

p.s. it also appeared that the Stanford ground was too "bouncy"

Actually, though it may seem like any penalty would have to go to
Klinsmann (along with the judges scores), this particular one went to
Rudi Voeller. There also was a much more obvious penalty disallowed earlier
in the game on Guido Buchwald (I think). At least the right team won.

Did he really? But as we all know from Romario: he says this today,
he says that tomorrow. So probably he knows by now that he's better than

Due to Rangers' policy of selling tickets only to people who travelled to

been unable to obtain tickets for next week's game in Brugge. Is there
anyone in Belgium who can advise me on the likelihood of obtaining tickets

+ in great shape,
... So Romario never really got a chance. Then, the South America Cup of 1991(?
was played in Brazil.

Being a Brazillian fan all my life I must say that there has been up
and down times associated with that role. Seeing one disappointment after
another is a hard thing to live with seeing to the fact that while I was
living in Jamaica, more than half of the Jamaican soccer fans routes for
the Brazillian soccer team in the world cup, while the other half routes
for Argentina. The Brazillian team in previous world cups has had very
dissappointing results. This has been highly upsetting for me to the point
where I have been in fights and arguments with fans who are in support of
the Argentinian teams over the years while I was living in Jamaica. It seems
to me that there has been string of bad luck following the Brazillian team
whenever they play in the world. In 1978 they were cheated out of a goal
against Sweden, which in my opinion if the goal was allowed the World Cup final
might have had been a different result if the final was between Argentina and
Brazil. In 1982 Italy with this Polo Rossi demon ended Brazil's hope for that
World Cup. Then in 1986 France defeated Brazil on penalty kicks. But the worse
nightmare of all, Argentina defeating Brazil in the 1990 World Cup. What is
happening to my Brazillian team? Can anybody explain if there is a problem in
organizing the team or what? To me Brazillian soccer style of playing is by
far the best in the world, don't even think of Argentina, there is no
comparison. But overall South American style of playing is more exciting to
watch than European style of playing, but one thing I believe is the problem
with South American teams especially Brazil, they need to score more goals in
their matches instead of relaxing when they are winning. The European teams
seem to be more consistent when it comes to scoring goals, although South
American teams are more skillfull when it comes to scoring goals.

Ivor Reid
SUNY AT BUFFALO (BUFFALO, NY)
P.S. I know that many European teams are adopting South American style of
playing.

OK, I was a bit OTT, but something must be done about standards (or double
standards) of refs. Making them accountable is a good idea, you are in most
other jobs.

I wonder what Richie Pitt or Bobby Park think when they see tackles like that!

Exactly the point. Many people see quarters (which, after all, are for
the sole benefit of *American* television - commercial television all
over the world copes with halves) as the thin end of an American wedge
to change the character of the game. And by coincidence, this very morning
I got a "blueprint" from the San Francisco Blackhawks for their vision
of a U.S. "division 1" soccer league. Surprise, surprise it has the
a list of "needed" rules changes:- quarters, kickins, unlimited
substitutions, no offside except within 30 yards of the goal, no
defensive walls, and best of all, keeper not allowed to use his hands
on shots from outside the area...

----- MEXICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE: FIRST DIVISION NEWS -----

29th WEEK SCORES (20-22/FB/93)

VERACRUZ VS LEON 0 - 1

MONTERREY VS ATLANTE 1 - 2

First defeat at home for The Gang. Luis Miguel Salvador
scored both for the Iron Colts and became the new scoring
leader.

ATLAS VS MORELIA 1 - 1

The Foxes were uncapable to beat 'Tota's tribe. Trailing
0-1 early in the first half, Atlas put more pressure in
the second period. Luis Flores made the equalizer.

TOLUCA VS PACHUCA 2 - 3

It was it for Toluca's coach Jose Valtonra who got fired
after the game. The Sausage Makers have made only two
points in the last ten games. A golden victory for Pachuca
who keeps the pace with Santos and Queretaro on Highway to Hell.

GUADALAJARA VS U. DE G. 1 - 1

This was the good-bye game for Javier 'Vasco' Aguirre
who will now be assistant of Miguel Mejia Baron in
the national team. Like in last week game against U.A.T.
the Holy Flock saw the victory fly away with five minutes
left. They are still trailing Atlas by three points
searching desperately for a place in the playoffs.

PUEBLA VS U.A.T. 1 - 1

Tragedy at Cuauhtemoc Stadium. The worst team in the
tournament (3 points in 14 away games) came alive
with a draw against Lapuente's boys. Puebla is now
trailing both America and U.N.A.M. by three points
trying to get a wild card spot.

QUERETARO VS U.A.G. 0 - 0

U.N.A.M. VS CRUZ AZUL 1 - 0

David Pati~o buried the Blue Machine. The Cougars are
the best second round team and are looking forward to
reaching Leon Green Paunches in the second place of
Group IV.

SANTOS VS AMERICA 1 - 3

Tough victory for the Eagles in a sold-out at Corona
Stadium. The situation is getting more and more diffi-
cult for the Torreon squad combined with Pachuca's win
and Queretaro's draw.

NECAXA VS U.A.N.L. 2 - 2

Necaxa started the game as if they were to blow the
Tigers out with goals by Vernuncio and Garcia Aspe.
However, U.A.N.L. answered with a header by Carlos
Mu~oz and a beatiful goal by 'Abuelo' Cruz. Excellent
campaign for both sides. Necaxa keeps the first
overall standing, and the Tigers are solid in the
first place of group three.

Of course, by law, the keeper is not supposed to move his feet from
the goal line until the ball is kicked (although he can wave his arms
or jiggle his knees---a la Bruce Grobelar---if he likes). However, my
little interesting contribution is that the keeper doesn't have to
stand in the centre of the goal---a coaching manual I read when I was
a wee lad told how some keeper way back when took the approach of
trying to psych out the penalty taker by standing about only a third
of the way along the line from one of the posts; the penalty taker
could take the option of going for the bigger area, knowing the keeper
would most probably dive that way, or trying to wrong-foot the keeper
and squeeze the ball in the smaller area. Don't know who the keeper
was or how successful his technique proved to be, but it was legal (at
least according to my old coaching manual)!

: (But don't let your linesman make that call!)
: ---------------------
: The duty of the linesman to watch for keeper movement is clearly
: spelled out in the Laws of the Game under the section The Diagonal System of
: Control (p. 69, Laws of the Game, 1992). The Linesman also acts as a goal
: judge.
:
: What you intend, I think, is that the linesman should provide you the
: information that the keeper moved and that the you, the referee, should make
: the actual call. The mechanics and cooperation between officials at this
: point is critical. There are many ways for the linesman to indicate there was
: a problem, without becoming the focus of attention. Then, as you pointed out,
: it takes a referee with the appropriate courage to actually make the call.
:
: Please, be certain of what you say (versus what you intend). Some non-
: referees might quickly take your comments out of context (or literally, if
: not expressed well) and turn on some unsuspecting linesman or referee at a
: game.

You're right, of course. I instruct my linesman that his primary duty
is to watch for a goal. Secondarily he is to watch the keeper's feet.
I don't want him to wave a flag or anything - but with eye-to-eye contact
I want to know if the keeper stayed his line or not.

Its not a popular call (what calls are?) but I've called the keeper for
premature movement, who saved the shot, then have had the PK retaken.
("Hey, keeper, I don't make up the rules, I just enforce them.")

The English leagues have used this for quite a few years now. I say it does
+ stop
teams playing for a draw. It's a good idea and I hope FIFA go for it.

There are surnames in Turkey, but sports figures are typically referred
to by their first name. Therefore, one usually mentions a player's team
as well, to make it clear which Mustafa etc. they may be referring to.

There has been times when a first division team has had (according to
my recollection) as many as 3 players with the same first name, in
which case nicknames are used to distinguish them.

It's always funny to watch an away match for the Turkish national team
since the TV feed from the host country usually has the last names
listed at the beginning of the match, and it's not always obvious from
that which players are on the squad.

Thanks for typing the info, it's already been copied to at least one
Turkish mailing list.

According to how you describe it - the player should have been shown
a red card and sent off. Last year's instructions included the
'deliberate handeling of the ball' to stop a goal as "serious foul play".

Subject: PROPOSED CHANGES
Message-Id: <1993Feb24.0...@news.cs.brandeis.edu>
Date: Tue, 23 Feb 1993 21:29:11 -0500
Organization: Brandeis University

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about the proposed changes to the game.
The most prominent suggestions have been to divide the game up into four
quarters and allowing more substitutions. Pele, that wizard of Brazilian
soccer, has also spoken up in favour of certain changes. In a recent issue of
Shoot/Match (?) magazine, Kevin Keegan also talked about the changes he would
like to see implemented - four quarters, two substitutes from five, downsizing
of the English Premier League from 22 to 18 clubs etc.

I have a few comments.

FOUR QUARTERS?

If the game is divided into four quarters of 25 minutes, would not this give
players more of a chance to catch their breath and recuperate? When soccer
games are played during harsher weather conditions especially in the summer or
winter, player well-being becomes all the more important. When the players are
affected by the heat and humidity or cold, there is a more likely resultant
drop in match quality. Soccer is an extremely taxing sport, even so for
athletes in tip-top condition. Dividing the game into four quarters would give
players more of a chance to replenish lost bodily fluids and give coaches more
of an opportunity to change tactics and strategy. Of course, there is the fear
that the game might be divided up further into more sub-units. A typical
rhetorical question goes: what next - ten quarters of nine minutes? This is
flippant. Going by that line of logic, we might as well not divide a game up
into two halves. Have 90 minutes of continuous play.

If dividing the game up into 4 quarters can engender more TV commercial time
- why not? More sponsorship could mean that clubs can go on to bigger, better
things.

PLAYER SUBSTITUTION - FIVE ON THE BENCH

Teams should be allowed a maximum of five substitute changes. Again, this will
give coaches/managers more of a chance to change tactics and strategy. When
there are too many in-form and healthy players competing for first team action,
it becomes difficult for a manager to make player selection: who to select? what
formation to adopt? With a wider choice of player selection, managers can
actually think deep in the areas of tactics and strategy without being
hampered by limited substitute availabilty. Of course, a good manager is a
good manager whether there are two or five substitutes available. But, the
point I'm trying to make is that with more substitutes available, the scope
and opportunity for tactical/strategic change is made greater. This could
produce a more exciting game.

Appreciate CONSTRUCTIVE comments. Thanks.

Yeah right, he *REALLY* planned it that way, and barmby is the *ONLY* player
Spurs have. Silly me, I thought Gary Flitcroft of Man City would be in the
squad. Anyway, the teams were notified over six months ago that they would
have to release players in line with FIFA rules.

I was at the game, and yes you were imagining this. The first thing I
noticed when I came through the tunnel was how square the field looked. I
estimated the width to be pushing 80 yards (75 meters). This is a good
width for most fields in the States because of the track around fields and
such. The length, however, did seem a bit small. Looking at the where
the football endzone was (you could see the faded lines), I'd say the field
was barely 110 yards long (100 meters). According to FIFA, the width ranges
from 50 to 100 yards (45 to 90) meters while the length ranges from 100 to
130 yards (90 to 120 meters). I actually thought they could have dropped
a yard or two on each side and been able to add five yards or more in length.

Regulations have been "overlooked" in some cases. I think NY is not
wide enough for WC standards, but I won't get into this cause others
probably know more and are rather emotional about it.

We have had lots of rain this past month so the field was rather wet.
I did not notice the field being too "bouncy" at the time, however looking
back I can remember a couple of times where the ball took some large
bounces. BTW, it rained almost the entire week leading up to the game,
including Saturday, however game day was sunny and rather nice. On
Monday the rain started again and it has been raining all day today. At
least that's the story over here in Santa Cruz (hour SouthWest).

Before I go on I would like to know if anyone out there is
interested in, or keeps copies of, World Cup information. I have some
and would be happy to post it or put it in the archive if it isn't already
there. On with the show.

Well as you can see I have way too much time on my hands at the
moment so I'll be bombarding you with more information on the teams in
the World Youth Championships. This time around we'll look at perennial
finalists Brazil.

(begin quote)

Brazil qualified for Australia '93 by winning the 4th South American U20
Football Championship in relatively easy fashion, only dropping one point
(a 0-0 draw with fellow qualifier Uruguay) in its six matches. After
struggling to defeat easy-beat Bolivia by only 1-0, Brazil finished its
preliminary group matches with a 100% record, seeing off Paraguay (1-0)
and Ecuador (2-0). In the final group matches, Brazil overcame its hiccup
against Uruguay to beat Ecuador (2-0) and Colombia (1-0), thus completing
its overall campaign without conceeding a single goal.

Although Portugal won the last FIFA/Coca-Cola Cup on home soil, it
was Brazil who did most to excite passions. Second in 1991 they will, as
always, feature amongst the favourites of a competition they dominated in the
mid eighties. The current young Brazilians have the famous Brazilian flair
laced with deadly finishing and are rich in individual skill. As if that wasn't
enough, the Brazilian squad will be amongst the best prepared in the
tournament, having almost played continuously since winning its qualifying
series in Medellin, Colombia, last August.
Brazil will also have the added advantage of being familiar with local
conditions after four matches in the host country last December. [They won
this series on a penalty shootout after the last match saw both sides with
wins apiece and two draws and equal goals]
Lover of the 'jogo bonito', Brazil's beautiful play, should not be
disappointed by this 1993 vintage Brazil. The hard to please Brazilian press
says that this team arouses memories of Brazil's glory days. Under Julio
Cesar Leal Junior's coaching the talent of the youngsters has blossomed, none
more so than No 10 Adriano from the Guarani Club, midfielder Marcelinho and
winger Mauricio.
Marcelinho is the team's playmaer who, with Adriano, is the provider.
Mauricio and Vasco de Gama's Fian operate as out and out strikers and
account for most of Brazil's goals. The slightly-built Adriano is being
compared to none other than the former great playmaker of the 60's and early
70's, Tastao, while Mauricio has been hailed as the best Brazilian winger
since the incomparable Garrincha, no less! In Dida, a goalkeeper who combines
acrobatics with total dominance of his area, and classy full-back Gerson,
Brazil have more brilliant individuals who can colour any canvas [huh?].
Brazil is the one team sure to satisfy the purist. Australian soccer
fans are already licking their lips in anticipation of their breathtaking
skills. There is no finer sight in football than the Brazilians in full flow.
With a coach loathe to shackle his youngsters with defensive
constraints, the young Brazilians should provide the soccer connoisseur with
untold delights at this World Youth Championship.
[Not the most objective report I've ever read but I'm sure the point is made]

Henrique Silva's comments about Romario and Brazil's 1989 Copa
America championship side got me thinking. That was a wonderful
team: Mazhino, Aldair, Ricardo, Mauro Galvao, Branco, Dunga,
Silas, Valdo, Bebeto and Romario. I don't recall the play
that Henrique mentioned, but I do recall Romario's incredible
scissor-kick goal against Argentina, and his header that gave
Brazil the championship (1-0 over Uruguay). There was another
midfielder that started early in the tournament and eventually
lost his place to Silas (Geovani?? I don't recall his name). And
where is Silas playing now? Things did not work out well for him
in Italy with Sampdoria. Is he back in Brazil? Also, does Jao Paolo
have any chance of playing for Brazil again. He was the best player
Brazil had in an otherwise disappointing 1991 Copa America, played
well for Bari in Italy, and then suffered a serious leg injury. But
that was almost 18 months ago. Is he playing again?

I still think the problem with Brazil in 1990 World Cup was not
the system that Lazarone used (though he was criticized heavily
for it), but the players that he selected: Mozer fouls too much,
Alemao is terribly overrated (sorry, but though I love Brazilian
soccer, I don't like him at all) and with him and Dunga in the
midfield there was little creation (Valdo still seems like more
of a dribbler than a creator), and Muller is simply not a world
class player.

Henrique wanted discussion on Latin American soccer. I am all
for that too!

So Telemundo has done it again. Last Sunday I settle down in
front of a friend's TV to watch Argentina-Brasil, having
assiduously avoided my email in order not to know the score
beforehand, having begged my friend's indulgence (she's no
futbol fan, and I have no cable, and the station is too faint
to catch via antenna)... ok, you get the picture. IT'S A BIG DEAL.

It's always a big deal when Argentina and Brasil play. And as the
show starts...

SEVILLA-VALENCIA.

Immediate flurry of words conveying shock and anger... Tony la repu...

And the hijo de la reputisima madre que lo remilpario didn't even
apologize for not having the game that he promised.

ARGH!

Ariel
PS: So are they EVER going to show this game?

"... if an Argentinian or such ..." or such ? what do you mean Steve ? do I
smell rotten racism there ? (by the way about 1 out of 60 Argentineans (..eans
please,) are of British ascent, and many Argentinean ways are customs (including
excellence in football,) are equally of British origin.

Cheers,

The following was given to me by a fellow referee. He claims it to be on of the
first written versions of the Laws of the Game. When I read it, I had to laugh
about the emotional discussions in r.s.s about quarters, kick-in vs throw-in,
back-passes to the keep, etc. I personally love laws V and X!!! And I wonder
what the Laws will be a hundred years from now????? Enjoy.

Soccer Football Laws
1863

I
The maximum length of the ground shall be 200 yards, the maximum breadth shall be 100
yards, the length and breadth shall be marked off with flags and the goal shall be
defined by two upright posts, 8 yards apart, without any tape or bar across them.

II
The Game shall be commenced by a place kick from the centre of the ground by the side
winning the toss, the other side shall not approach within 10 yards of the ball until
it is kicked off. After a goal is won the losing side shall be entitled to a kick
off.

III
The two sides shall change goals after each goal is won.

IV
A goal shall be won when the ball passes over the space between the goal posts (at
whatever height), not being thrown, knocked on, or carried.

V
When the ball is in touch, the first player who touches it shall kick or throw it
from the point on the boundary line where it left the ground, in a direction at
right angles with the boundary lines.

VI
A player shall be out of play immediately if he is in front of the ball, and must return
behind the ball as soon as possible. If the ball is kicked past a player by his own
side, he shall not touch or kick it or advance until one of the other side has first
kicked it or one of his own side on a level with or in front of him has been able to
kick it.

VII
In the case the ball goes behind the goal line, if a player on the side whom the goal
belongs first touches the ball, one of his side shall be entitled to a free kick from
the goal line at the point opposite the place where the ball shall be touched. If a
player of the opposite side first touches the ball, one of his side shall be entitled
to a free kick from a point 15 yards outside the goal line, opposite the plave where the
ball is touched.

VIII
If a player makes a fair catch he shall be entitled to a free kick, provided he claims
it by making a mark with his heel at once: and in order to take such kick he may go as
far back as he pleases, and no player on the opposite side shall advance beyond his
mark until he has kicked.

IX
A player shall be entitled to run with the ball toward his adversaries' goal if he
makes a fair catch, or catches the ball on the first bound: but in the case of a fair
catch, if he makes his mark, he shall not then run.

X
If any player shall run with the ball towards his adversaries' goal, any player on
the opposite side shall be at liberty to charge, hold, trip, or hack him, or to wrest
the ball from him: but no player shall be held and hacked at the same time.

XI
Neither tripping or hacking shall be allowed, and no player shall use his hands, or
elbows to hold or push his adversary, except in the case provided for by Law X.

XII
Any player shall be allowed to charge another, provided they are both in active play.
A player shall be allowed to charge even he is out of play.

XIII
A player shall be allowed to throw the ball or pass it to another if he makes a fair
catch, or catches the ball on the first bound.

XIV
No player shall be allowed to wear projecting nails, iron plates, or gutta percha on
the souls or heels of his shoes.

Definitions:

may chose to place it.

Free Kick is the privilege of kicking the ball, without obstruction, in such manner as
the kicker may think fit.

Fair Catch is when the ball is caught, after it has touched the person of an adversary
or has been kicked, knocked on, or thrown by an adversary, and before it has touched
the ground or one of the side catching it: but if the ball is knocked from out of
touch, or from behind the goal line, a fair catch cannot be made.

Hacking is kicking an adversary on the front of the leg, below th knee.

Tripping is throwing an adversary by the use of the legs without hands, and without
hacking or charging.

Touch is that part of the field, on either side of the ground, which is beyond the
line of flags.

Gee, it seems that Australian Rules Football, American Football, Rugby
Football, and Soccer used to be very similar sports!

But, after a hundred and thirty years, they have developed along
totally different paths. So I wouldn't consider these OLD laws from
the past when deciding on the benefits of a new law at the present.
