Does anyone know if our sport of football has been portrayed in oil,
watercolour, or other artistic media?

I'm sure there must be some painting out there with it as a central or
secondary theme.

In a related note, how about posters? How many of you have vintage or
collectible posters with footballers or perhaps World Cup memorabilia
and the like? :)

Probably the most famous (and most valuable) is L S Lowry's "Going to
the Match" which was sold at Sotheby's for just under 2 million GBP.
The painting depicts crowds going to Bolton Wanderer's Burnden Park

He also painted "The Football Match"

Nicolas de Staël painted a few football scenes in the fifties.

I immediately loved it. He's got that El Grecoesque elongation of
figures which gives a languorous vitality to his subjects.

I like this one less, since the composition is too crowded for my
taste.

Check out Huddersfield. And Britain at Play! Also Three Men and a Cat.
Brilliant. :)

Thanks Paul! Trust you to know about this.

Ali, this is simply amazing. Thank you so much for finding it.

If only I had the money and it were available, how happy I would be to
buy this painting.

Wow. And his description is enchanting. It reminds me of Loul and
Juan's meeting at this self-same Parc des Princes, and how they must
have felt -- a timeline of emotion and reaction that is duplicated
time and time again about football.

Merci encore, Ali. :)

Hi I've been 'lurking' on this ng for awhile now and finally decided
to try posting...anyway a couple of months ago there was an exhibit at
the SFMOMA by a German photographer Andreas Gursky. He had a beautiful
photograph of an international match between Holland and I think
France. I believe you can see Stam at the bottom. I'm not sure if you
can see it online but I just thought I'd let ya know :-)

My favorite is on the WC 94 shirt I bought, not sure who the artist is but
it shows up on ebay from time to time.
