Personally I think Germany will get past Italy and meet France in the
final and win the WC but it's curious that if you look at Germany,
Italy, France and Portugal the only one of the 4 who does not have a
great pair of Centre-Backs is indeed Germany. Can a team without a
Carvalho-Meira or Gallas-Thuram or Cannavaro-Nesta really become World
Champions, for some reason it's a little hard to believe even though
that's my opinion, that Germany will indeed win it all.

Portuguese media had not been caustic against a single opponent all
month long but sadly it has come to and end as today's edition of "O
Jogo" opens up with "Idiot Frenchman" refering to Frank Ribéry:

www.ojogo.pt/22-133/index.htm

Frank Ribéry: "Scolari is a great player who played for great teams".

Was this reason enough for the Portuguese newspaper to brand him an
idiot, an ignorant, and a joker? Not in my book, this sort of cheap
insults directed towards a future opponent embarass me as a Portuguese
citizen and I hope it does not get worse than this rethoric which was
stupid and umpleasant enough already before our upcoming game.

I thank "O Jogo" for giving extra motivation to Frank Ribery, much like
I thank "Marca" and Aragones for having given extra motivation to Zidane
and Henry.

The vast majority of Portuguese Football fans are horrified at this
sort of behaviour by the Newspaper and aren't siding with the paper.
Speaking for myself I am embarassed to see a newspaper from my country
mistreat opponents pre-game like this.

I think this sort of disrespect for opponents is disgracefull no matter
what the media from the opposing country might be saying against us
there is no need to try to up the ante.

Before a game one needd humilty and ambition, "O Jogo" today stinks of
arrogance and dissrespect, I have no empathy with this sort of
rethoric.

Disgraceful.

I'm not sure why you're doing this Andre, but you're grossly
overstating the cas. The quote in question (at the end of an article
that presents Ribery as a wise, measured interviewee):

"Confusão, piada de mau gosto ou simplesmente ignorância. Só mesmo
Ribéry saberá porque classificou Luiz Felipe Scolari como "um grande
jogador, que jogou em grandes equipas". Informado em plena conferência
de Imprensa sobre o cargo de Felipão, que, enquanto atleta foi um
defesa-central de poucos atributos, conforme o próprio já admitiu, o
avançado francês manteve a postura. "Perdão, confundi a pessoa..."

Which translates as:

"Confusion, joke in poor taste or simply ignorance. Only Ribery would
know why he classified Scolari as a "great player, who played on great
teams". Informed during the press conference on Felipao's [career?
"cargo" is hard to translate here], who, while an athlete was a
center-fullback of small [talent, maybe? "attributes", literaly], as he
himself has admitted, the French forward kept his ["postura" here is
perhaps best translated as "poise"]. "Pardon me, I confused the
person".

Hardly the rabble-rousing screed you claim.

Now, the front-page link does read "Idiot Frenchman", but the article
proper seems eminently fair.

Yes, but the front page is everything lots of people see, and even if the
article is correct, it is awful to see a portuguese newspaper go that way
after all we criticized the british media before the game. I have to agree
with André on this one cause I too thought it was a front page in very poor
taste. I like to see front pages cheering for our team, not stomping on our
opponents.

I know but the cover alone is enfuriating. And I'm sure a lot of
Frenchmen see the cover and don't bother to read the rest.

It could say "Ribéry Confused" or "Rybéry's gaff" but to actually
call him or any other opponent an "Idiot" is inadmissible. As a
Portuguese I feel ashamed by this.

Agreed 100%.

William Gallas who I think is one of the world's top 5 Centre-Backs and
one of my favourite players spent today's Press Conference denigrating
us:

http://www.maismundial2006.iol.pt/noticia.php?id=703481&div_id=2714

But I don't care, if he wants to say that then it's his business, he
does not represent me or Portugal but "O Jogo" to a degree does and
this sort of "Sensationalist 1st Page" is insulting and makes it sound
like we are a country without fairplay. There's no room for this sort
of tactics in football especially from the nespaper which I consider by
far Portugal's best sports newspaper. This is very unlike them, reason
all the more why I was surprised and not ammused.

If France mocks us, if their players denigrate us, if Domenech puts us
down (he hasn't) in the media then we will try to the best of our
ability to give them our answer on the Football pitch on Wednesday and
nowhere else.

Something tells me that Ribery never heard of "O Jogo", much less read
it the day before a WC semi-final. This is just trying to sell
newspapers.

Who cares about Scolari? Nobody gives a shit about him, his past, his

André,
Se te dizes tão português como apregoas, escreve em português, este grupo é
de sufixo .pt.
Vivi alguns anos em Inglaterra, não tenho nada contra eles, bem pelo
contrário, mas sempre me irritou ver um português a armar em bife.

Tens toda a razão.
Só uma pequena correcção.
Não é sufixo pt.
É prefixo pt.
