Pick for each position the player that you are sure will be the best
next season.

For each position, you can pick one or more player. 36 hours to vote.
And I already know, my selection sucks.

May I add some South American-based names to the list?

Best next season according to whom? Or do you mean that what we vote here, is
who will be "best" next season, and the most votes wins?

So it's a projection of predicted output, not an assessment of how
good they are now?

And we stay to your players?

This criterion make you abstract from current form / performance this
season (the Player of the Season award will come after the Copa
America) / career. OTOH, the very conservative selection doesn't allow
non-established young players to be there. The remaining ones should
be players that have performed well and are expected to continue doing
so: not a perfect definition of "world class", but I hope it goes in
the right direction.

> For each position, you can pick one or more player.

As usual, so that you don't have to decide between the underdog who is
in your heart and the lad with realistic chances who you would like to
win against that annoying lad that half of the people will vote. E.g.
if you like Navas very much and you prefer Messi vs. Ronaldo, you can
vote both Navas and Messi.

Hmm... I thought about it and then preferred to *not* go for a
nomination-then-selection system. Maybe I should have done it? Let's
say that the list is closed by now to avoid chaos, but *please* tell

it have been? (call for nominations first?)

While I waited for your answer, I've tried to make a list, but it
grew too big and too concentrated on attacking midfielders and
strikers, and I've also noticed that you've put Ronaldinho and
Riquelme in your list, so maybe it was just the case of adding a few
names. I'll have to work on that list so I can add only a couple or a
handful of options in each position.
And calling for nominations would indeed become chaotic as you said.

In my mind it's an assessment of how good they are now, but not in the
sense "Torres has scored just 1 goal in the last 4 months" or "Di
Natale is the best striker this season" (?!). OTOH, I wanted you to
choose someone who has still fuel, since otherwise one could be too
influenced by global career performance (e.g. I'm not stating that at
their peak Ferdinand>Nesta). I tried to find a tricky way to ask you
"who is the best goalkeeper in the world" avoiding such ambiguities; I
don't know whether I've managed to do it, though!

Yes, please.

I've received a private vote via e-mail (I don't know if he wants to

Consider that I limited myself to 10 (or little more) players per
position. So there are of course a lot of great strikers left out.

I know that my list is very "big European leagues + oldies"-focused.
(As a matter of fact) the South American players that almost made the
cut include Luis Fabiano, Veron, Victor, Ganso (no Neymar?!).

Indeed I just thought: "People won't like to basically answer twice
the same question. Come on, am I not able to come up with a list of
all the players who someone could desire to vote?" Now I know that I
am not.

I'm still not sure I understand, though. People should vote for the players
they think will be the best in the 2011-2012 season?

It's worht A LOT. Thanks.

I don't know whether some of us would have voted for anyone of these
players as the best in the world in his position, but for sure they
are better than some of my picks, so I should have thought the whole
thing better.

Now I want to know who you pick among the players in the original

That they "are sure" will be the best in the 2011-12 season... ;) I.e.
if you are undecided between someone with still-unfulfilled potential
and a player that is already at his peak you should pick the latter.

The fact is that in my mind "I am sure that he will be the best GK
next season" and "he's the best GK in the world" [1] somewhat
overlap... If for you they don't overlap, I'd like you to pick "the
best GK in the world" (even if it's against the wording of my original
post) [2], but of course you are free to interpret my words as you
want.

[1] I.e., again, not "the most in form" or "the GK of the season", nor
"the highest among those one in an all-time ranking"; even though they
could all be the same person, obviously.

[2] But I would also like to know why the best GK in the world won't
be the best next term... :)

Actually even taking into account the omissions the list shows just how
crap the level of modern players is compared to say 20 years ago. The RB
& LB slots are especially brutal. DMs? Not one of them is anywhere near
Desailly, Vieira, Gattuso, Petit (in their prime) level.

Indeed it does. No Barbie?!? Come on! It's true that most coaches misuse him
- I'd play him as AM, not ST - but come on! And I don't know why people here
don't like Amauri - I'd listed him too. Next, wtf is Danni Alves doing at RM -
he's a RD! And useless at both positions, but that's just IMHO. And no Gareth Bale!

I refuse to be bound by your selection, and will vote as I please. What to do
with my vote is in your court. :)

<Scanners>
And what's that nonsense I read about not counting second picks? Why would
we do them if you don't count them! Of course you count them! You count them!

Agger - A megastud. Like Woodgate he's hurt too often to recognize,
but impeccable when he plays.
Vidic

Tevez

No Bale? No Cavani? You got Rooney/Tevez in different categories of
players from Messi?

I'm almost serene about this one, since picking just ten strikers you
have to leave out great players. OTOH, why have i chosen to pick just
ten strikers?!

I won't try to defend it, but look where he plays on the field: it's
where a lot of wingers play...

I won't count out-of-list players (so *people don't do it!*), but I'll
keep a record of them, so archaeologists of the future will be able to
decide. :)

Don't worry, we'll find them and train them to be like us!

(just to be clear: if you pick two players, it's one point each; but
if you pick "first X, second Y" is one point to X, 0 to anyone else)

OK, I'm going. The funny thing is that I'm already sweating *and MH
hasn't replied yet*. I better have some form of satori before he
posts.

While Ronaldinho has been quite pedestrian, Thiago Neves has been the
standout player of a Flamengo side that hasn't lost a single match
this year.

This is not surprising. He has always been a productive player at club level
in Brazil. Football-wise, I like his signing better than Ronaldinho's (who
to me is closer to a former player).

Don't read too much into this, though. They have been bad often - and this
is not my admitted bias talking. Even the fla-press is saying the same
thing!

I don't see enough of these players and am too easily swayed by live
commentary and what I read to vote fairly in this. I'm glad you're
doing this, though, and look forward to seeing the results.

So it's logical to make him play at NT level outside Brazil. So it
seems to me, at least.
