Her serve is as fast as some of the men at times.

Well it's not even remotely true. You should be able to tell that for
yourself if you watch the matches. I just saw the tape delay of that
match on ESPN... Serena hits bent-armed like the other girls.
Dementieva actually has a sharper stroke, but could not match Serena's
mental strength.

Besides that, for all you sexist guys, just look at her more prominent
features and you should be able to lay such talk to rest :-)

Not remotely close. Unless she hits a smash and he hits a slice.

I have to say, I have no interest in the Williams domination of the
Ladies' Singles. I'm so glad that I have a ticket for Sunday rather than
Saturday. In fact, I'd rather have tickets for any day of the fortnight
than the last Saturday or Thursday.

You should check up the definition of "not remotely close"!

Serena Williams' fastest ever serve is as fast (in mph) as Nadal or
Federer's average serves. The only difference is that the men can do it
more often. So there isn't actually much in it, just the men are more
consistently powerful.

I'm not saying either of the Williams sisters could beat anyone on the
men's tour mind you. But they can hit a one-off powerful serve as fast
as some of the men. At least, that's what Sue Barker said the other day!

probably going to beat her sister as well.

I have to say I didn't hear quite so much negative talk when Steffi Graf
was dominating even more suffocatingly than anyone, men or women,
today. Not with everyone, but in many cases there's been a lot of
latent and even not-so-latent racism in people's reaction to the
Williams sisters. Sad, that.

Compare the fastest to the fastest, or the distribution to the

Venus is supposed to have a record in the 200 kph range. Slightly
faster than the _average_ for Sampras's second serve.

Murray and this era is a lot more competitive than the big serving
Sampras era.

There is no point in watching women's Tennis for the sport. The only
reason to watch is for the eye candy. The women's game is vastly
inferior to the men's game. You'll see more unforced errors, more
dropped serves and considerably less variety in the play itself. Henin
and Hingis were the only women worth watching for their shotmaking. Now
they're both retired and we're left with Eastern Europeans, some of whom
are very attractive (Sorana Carstea and Ivanovic) and the Williams
sisters. Graf may have had a big nose and played a horribly defensive
game but she was attractive. The Penis sisters are hideous and the
colour of their skin is irrelevant to that. Serena is so clearly juiced
to the gills it's ridiculous how many excuses people make for her
physique and muscle injuries, a tell tale sign of steroid use.

I don't follow women's tennis that closely, but have never heard any
such innuendo. Is this something that's whispered about on the tour?
And if so, do you really think she's the only one?

There's absolutely no evidence that Serena Williams is, or has ever
taken any performance enhancing drugs. To accuse he without any
evidence is absurd. Of all the major sports, tennis has been
relatively clean with most of the positive test coming for
recreational drugs like coke.

The William's sisters are also Jehovah Witnesses and their church has
an absolute prohibition on all drug use. Bottom line, it's highly
unlikely that either sister has, or is, using any drugs.

Her physique is the evidence as are the muscle injuries. It funny how
Navratilova was always accused of being on the gas, and she was, but
Serena is obviously clean. You cannot test for HGH and masking agents
which flush any trace of steroids and recreational drugs out of a
system. You can buy masking agents over the counter in the US and there
are guides on how to pass drug tests online. It's not rocket science.
How do you think most pro athletes pass drug tests? You think they're
all clean? Don't be so nave. Any athlete who gets caught is either a
complete idiot or has a poor medical team.

I wouldn't know what's said on tour but rumours about Serena being on
the gas are hardly news, where do you think I got the joke from? The
media in general are blinkered about steroid use in sports and the
former athletes turn a blind eye to it. Serena has more muscle mass than
most male players. Mauresmo and Kim Clijsters also have unnatural
physiques so I'd say they were on the gas as well. Many of the Eastern
Europeans are slim and athletic. Steroids aren't only used for gaining
muscle mass, they can also be used for stamina, slimming, muscle tone
etc, etc so who knows. I'm suspicious of most sports in general. There's
a reason why in the run up to the last Olympics WADA admitted they're
always one step behind the steroid users.

My original statement was "some of the men", not the Roddick's/Sampras's
of this world! Not remotely close was not the correct response. So don't
move the goalposts! The BBC were comparing it to the Nadal average
serve, and the Williams sisters are close enough. IIRC there was only a
few MPH in it, and strangely enough they were saying Venus has the
stronger serve of the two! However, it was only because it was being
discussed the other day that I posted my original post. But I really
couldn't give a shit about two women who look like men anyway. Unless
they come knocking at my door looking for a bit of 'rough' that is! :-)

Did you follow what happened with baseball?

Current debate in baseball is wether those caught deserve to be in
hall of fame. Consensus is that all the record breakers that did
steroids should still be in the hall of fame because "they were still
good" and also "their contemporaries and competition" were doing it
too.

Then there's some that think banning performance enhancing drugs is a
waste of time anyway, and it should be legalized and brought above
board.

True.

I don't think they should be legalised because the last thing we need is
kids and adults pumping their bodies full of steroids just because their
heroes do. Some bodies can handle steroids and some cannot. Broadcasters
need to acknowledge this is a huge problem in sports instead of turning
a blind eye or only accusing Johnny Foreigner while maintaining their
own athletes are clean and this utter bullshit that elevated levels of
testosterone, nandrolone or HGH etc, etc are due to toothpaste, cough
medicine, inhalers or are naturally produced etc, etc needs to stop as
well. The ignorance of the mainstream media is astounding.

This is nothing more than unsubstantiated claims on your part. Anyone
can make unsubstantiated claims about any athlete. Provide proof or
admit that you have none.

Carl Lewis has never tested positive for any banned substance but
Marion Jones has admitted that she used steroids.

This wouldn't be a problem if many of the substances have some very

What part of most drugs cannot be detected don't you understand?

http://www.innovations-report.com/html/reports/life_sciences/report-31507.html

'In the August/September issue of Update, the magazine of the New York
Academy of Sciences, writer Diane Kightlinger documents how advances in
drug production and genetic engineering are benefiting athletes
interested in evading tests and the ways in which scientists are
figuring out ways to create ever-better detection techniques.'

'However, current methods of Olympic testing still cannot catch athletes
who use steroids to bulk up during training but stop months before the
Games, or those who use EPO more than a few days before competition.'

> Carl Lewis has never tested positive for any banned substance

Yes he has.

Carl Lewis's positive test covered up
By Jacquelin Magnay
April 18 2003

Olympic legend Carl Lewis is among more than 100 American athletes
involved in a cover-up of drug use, documents reveal.

Lewis and two of his training partners all took the same three types of
banned stimulants and were caught at the 1988 US Olympic trials,
according to the documents released by a disgruntled former senior US
anti-doping official, Dr Wade Exum.

But on appeal to their national Olympic committee, all were cleared of
inadvertent doping. Two months later, at the Seoul Olympics, Lewis
finished second in the 100 metres sprint. But when Canadian Ben Johnson
failed his Olympic drug test, Lewis was awarded the 100m gold.

Lewis also won the Olympic long jump - as part of his career tally of
nine Olympic gold medals - and his training partner, Joe De Loach, won
the 200m in Seoul.

Lewis's lawyer, Martin Singer, has responded to the revelations by
saying his client had taken only a herbal remedy.

"Carl did nothing wrong," Mr Singer told The Orange County Register.
"There was never intent."

The latest documents show Lewis tested positive for the banned
stimulants found in cold medications: pseudoephedrine, ephedrine and
phenylpropanolamine.

The World Anti-Doping Agency's chairman, Dick Pound, dismissed the "no
intent" defence. Mr Pound has seen copies of the documents and said that
in some instances there was almost "automatic forgiveness" by the US
officials.

Letters written by a US Olympic Committee executive, Baaron Pittenger,
were sent advising some athletes of their positive drug-test results -
and at the same time told them they were being cleared.

"It's got to be pretty embarrassing to the USOC," said Mr Pound, "to
have their secretary-general writing in the letter, where he advises an
athlete of a positive A sample, 'I have to send you this, but we already
decided this was inadvertent.' That whole process turned into a joke."

Dr Exum, the former USOC
director for drug control from 1991 to 2000, released more than 30,000
pages of documents to Sports Illustrated. They confirm widespread
suspicion of the USOC drug-testing system before it was moved to an
independent body, the US Anti Doping Agency, AFTER the Sydney Olympics. *

The Herald reported last year that a US athlete tested positive to
steroids in 1999 but was allowed to compete - and win an Olympic gold
medal - in the 2000 Sydney Games. US officials still refuse to divulge
the name of the athlete, or those of 13 other athletes who had failed
drug tests around the same time, citing privacy laws.

In the Seoul 100m, Britain's Linford Christie was elevated from third to
second after Johnson was disqualified. In later years, Christie was
banned for using steroids.

The International Olympic Committee's medical commission chairman, Arne
Ljungqvist, said the Exum documents "fit a pattern" of failure to report
on positive drug cases. But the USOC called Dr Exum's accusations
"baseless".

Dr Exum said there were more than 100 positive tests for US athletes who
won 19 Olympic medals between 1988 and 2000, but many were allowed to
keep competing.

* After the Sydney Olympics Olympic Champions Justin Gatlin and Marion
Jones both tested positive for steroids.

> but Marion Jones has admitted that she used steroids.

Of course she did. She got caught and given her husband was also caught
she had no defence.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/16/sports/baseball/16anderson.html?ex=1355547600&en=86333aeb78309eed&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

Like it or not, H.G.H. is out there for any baseball player or
world-class athlete to use without fear of being detected. And as long
as there is no test, any baseball player or world-class athlete can deny
accusations of having used it. Selig and Fehr pointed to only three
flunked steroids tests this year as an indication that drug testing was
working, But was the low number of failed tests influenced by H.G.H.
becoming the performance-enhancer of choice?

Well, when they bring the game like Roddick did today then yes. As much
as I was supporting Andy today though, it is rare he gets this close
with Federer. Normally, he is out after 4 sets, especially after
choking the 2nd away the way he did.

Even four sets would be better than endless parade of straight-sets
matches we see in the women's - one of the semis was 6-1, 6-0 FFS!

Thirteen times a man has won a Grand Slam singles title without dropping
a set. Only two of those have been since 1980 - Federer (AUS 2007) and
Nadal (FRA 2008) have done it once each.

Women have done it 79 times in total and 13 times in the last 11 years.
The Williams sisters have managed it five times between them (Venus USA
2001 and WIM 2008, Serena WIM 2002, USA 2002 and USA 2008).

All fair enough and I hear you. In general though I think it was more
extreme in the Steffi Graf era and there was less negative talk about it
than there has been after the Williams sisters got going.

When Clijsters and Henin were still around and the rise of the Russians
was just starting, it was quite different. Women's tennis was much more
vibrant. Then the two aforementioned sharply declined and the best of
the Russians got interested in other things.

Let's be honest that's because the Williams sisters are no oil
paintings. Every schoolboy fantasised about Graf's thighs wrapped around
their waists.

More competitive yes but not vibrant. With the exception of Henin and
Mauresmo most of the women on tour play/played exactly the same.
