From the June issue of Spin Magazine (transcribed without permission):

THE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO THE WORLD CUP

by Stuart Bathgate

The 15th World Cup - soccer's holy grail - begins in Chicago on June 17.
So many teams, so many balls, so little time. What's a stupid American to
do when faced with a game where they don't use bats and they call the team
uniform a "strip"? Read on.

HOLLAND
Elegant darlings of European football purists. On their day, the most
stylish team in the world

Loose Cannon: The dreadlocked Ruud Gullit, who had threatened not to play.
Once sent off the field (benched) for, according to the referee, "clapping
in an ironic manner."

Fans: Renowned for chanting "Give us back our bicycles!" - an obscure WWII
reference - during matches against the despised Germans. Paint themselves
orange to pass the time.

Strip: Cool pastel orange shorts.

CAMEROON
Shock troops of the 1990 tournament. Artful but brutal.

Loose Cannon: Roger Milla, now 42, last seen arranging tawdry exhibition
matches between teams of Pygmies and bushmen.

Fans: Low-profile and undemonstrative, mainly because they can't afford to
travel to matches.

Strip: Deep green and tarnished gold.

ARGENTINA
The L.A. Raiders of world football. Once boasted a player called Killer.

Loose Cannon: Diego Maradona, last spotted shooting an air rifle at
journalists from his Buenos Aires apartment.

Fans: High-strung manic depressives.

Strip: Washed-out, cheap-looking blue and white stripes.

ITALY
Skillful cynics who divide time between training camp (for set-piece
rehersals) and theater-workshop classes (for those realistic falls in the
penalty area).

Loose Cannon: Roberto Baggio, minuscule pigtailed Buddhist.

Fans: Demonstrative and arrogant.

Strip: Rather tasteful light blue.

GERMANY
Stereotypically efficient, widely loathed for their unsporting tendancy to
win everything.

Loose Cannon: Jurgen Klinsmann, who has threatened to give up football for
international charity work and spends long stretches of each match falling
in the penalty box.

Fans: Blow Klaxons throughout the match.

Strip: Clinical white with sinister black bits.

COLOMBIA
Unpredictable and absurdly talented.

Loose Cannon: Insane goalkeeper Rene Higuita, notorious for hanging out
with the late drug lord Pablo Escobar.

Fans: Sober in the extreme. Poker-faced aficionados of pendejada -
annoying people for the sake of it - which many players have tried to turn
into an art form.

Strip: Pale imitation of Brazil's

BRAZIL
Spiritual home of world football. The greatness that won them three World
Cups is, however, long gone.

Loose Cannon: Romario De Souza Faria, expert in unarmed combat. Breaks
his leg every few matches.

Fans: Play samba drums throughout games.

Strip: Sunshine yellow with gloomy blue bits.

U.S.A.
Qualified automatically as hosts. Competent and a tad tedious.

Loose Cannon: Goalkeeper Tony Meola. Spends so much time during the match
dissing opponents that he often forgets about the ball.

Fans: Known for innovative chanting, e.g. "U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A...."

Strip: Red, white and blue, you idiot.

Here is a periodic posting of Facts about North American CISL teams
that I have been collecting from this mailing list:

First,
Let me say that I came up with very little of this on my own. Most of
this information came from Chris Allen and the indoor stuff from ???.
I keep posting it once in a while and getting updates. I try to
encorporate tidbits that I see flying by on the list, but may miss
some.

I propose that for each of the teams, we have someone responsible for
information on the team (the coach, the ticket prices, the manager, the
players, etc. In this document, we can keep the email addresses for
each "team info keeper." Anyone who wishes to do this for any of the
teams, let me know, and I will put your E-mail address in this file.
This file could have a lot more info, but it is getting awful big
already!

Any problems, send mail to us-socce...@lerami.lerctr.org
To "post" to the list (echoed in the digest), send mail to
us-s...@lerami.lerctr.org. Do NOT "post" directly to the digest.

To get the digest instead of the list, see below for instructions on
unsubscribing from the lsit, and subscribing to the digest.

THE NORMAL LIST:

TO SUBSCRIBE, send mail to us-socce...@lerami.lerctr.org
with the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) in the subject
line. The address that will be added to the list is the
address you send this mail from. You will get mail back
confirming. If you wish to subscribe a different address, you
put the address after the word "subscribe" on the subject
line.

TO UNSUBSCRIBE, send mail to
us-socce...@lerami.lerctr.org with the word "unsubscribe"
(without the quotes) in the subject line. The address that
will be removed from the list is the address you send this mail
from.

To change the address to which the mailing list mails your
mail, you must unsubscribe from the old address, then subscribe
from the new one OR send a request for it to be done manually
to the us-soccer-request address.

THE DIGEST:

TO SUBSCRIBE, send mail to
us-soccer-di...@freke.lerctr.org with the word
"subscribe" (without the quotes) in the subject line. The

A VERY small help/info file is available by sending an info or help
request to us-socce...@lerami.lerctr.org. I know it will accept
the command in the subject and I think it will accept it in the body
also. I will be adding to the info/help file as time passes. If any
of you have info that you think I should put in that file, please send
it to us-socce...@lerami.lerctr.org

To reply to a message, most mailers will accept an 'r' key to reply back to
the person who sent the mail. Again, most mailers accept a 'g' key to do a
GROUP reply which will go to the author of what you are replying to, AND to
the members of the list.

The owner of the site hosting this mailing list isn't interested in soccer,
nor does he want to deal with the list. Please do not send him any mail.

After watching CNN's World Soccer Weekly for the past several episodes, I
must confess that I am growing more and more disillusioned with the
program. Paul Crane has no spunk or meat to his broadcasting style - its
about as whitebread and, well, white bread. And Rodney Marsh's analysis
goes only far enough to let us know that he agrees with Paul Crane. I
guess I'm still looking forward to the day when a commentator will have an
emotionally charged opinion that isn't coated with crisco frosting.

OK, Lalas can sing and strum at the same time. We get it. Thank you.
Now lets concern ourselves with whether or not he can mark an attacker and
watch the ball at the same time. IMHO, that will be much more important
to the success of soccer in this country than whether he can strum, sing,
drink slurpies, or have sex (as discussed on CNN this week), or anything else
We don't want to tempt Madonna away from basketball - soccer has enough
image problems the way it is.

St. Louis 3 Sioux City 0
Sioux City 0 Cincinatti 4
Milwaukee 10 Oklahoma City 1
Milwaukee 4 Des Moines 1

I saw St. Louis defeat the Sioux City Breeze 3-0. The team
seems to be in total transition as they are now in the process of
adding their college players and players on loan from the St. Louis
Ambush of the NPSL. Mark Moser, recently of the Ambush, scored twice
in his debut with the Knights. His brother Kirk added the third goal.
The field was in great shape considering it had been under water only
ten days previously. The Knights looked a little unorganized on
their attack as might be expected with all of the new additions but
they clearly outplayed the Breeze. I would expect them to come on a
little stronger later in the season once the roster settles. It looks
as though the three home rain outs may work to their advantage in terms
of being able to play them later in the season. At this point in the
season I would have to say that Milwaukee looks the best of any Midwest
team I have seen.

Why is Brazil's strip blue and yellow instead of green and yellow as
in their flag?

The difference is in the socks, Colombia uses red ones and Brazil uses
white (?).

The flag is Blue-Yellow-Green-White, and so is the uniform.
