For the fifth time out of six, the best overall player of the season is the

UCL top scorer.
Players repeating themselves:
- Casillas wins every time the season ends with an even number (Spain
anyone?): 07-08, 09-10, 11-12.
- Messi is the best forward for the forth time in a row.
- Messi best overall player for the third time: 08-09, 10-11, 11-12.
But other trends ended...
Silverware counted less than ever: Casillas won Liga+Euro, Kompany the EPL,
Iniesta the Euro, but no player from the UCL winners is there, and Messi won
no major trophy. Of course Messi had the numbers on his side (50 goals for
Barca).
Usually the GK and DF rankings are narrower, this time Casillas won by a
margin of 6, Kompany and Iniesta by 4, Messi as FW by 1 (over Ronaldo, who
also got 1 vote as MF).
Interestingly, Messi as overall player won by 8: we are OK with saying
"Messi and Ronaldo are equally good forward" but not with saying "Messi and
Ronaldo are equally good players"?!

vote! Otherwise it was probably Casillas/Buffon, Ronaldo/Messi, or
something like that.
