Interesting that most of the Egyptian players are Egyptian based, while the
majority of Algerian players ply their trade in Europe. Among them Mourad
Meghni, who was once dubbed the new Zidane and had led France to a U-17

Strange are we watching the same games? :) I perceive this one as
exceptionally boring, no real chances for any of the sides, and quite
poor play. On the other hand Ukr-Gre was really exciting with non-stop
chances for both - real for Ukraine and potential for Greece. And much,
much better play. Unfortunately, the good Greek defence won them the
game again.

TV. This time they mention how the team that eliminates Brazil every
breakfast is going to the WC thanks to an illegal goal. Maybe someday

I think the point Luiz is making is that the aggregate score would
have been even with another Irish goal and yet they would be through.

It doesn't matter that they had a hard time qualifying. Now that they
are in they could, at least in theory, be a threat to any team out
there (same goes for Argentina).
Anyway, my point was more about how sports announcers tend to elect
some horses and beat them to a long, painful, cruel death. Even when
they have to associate completely unrelated events, like in the above
example.

TBH, I find it inconclusive. It may or may not be a penalty. Judging
from the way he fell, I'd say it was, unless he has taken classes of
artful falling in the box. But I can't see any clear contact on this
video.
If that's the best there is, I don't know, I guess it's not enough to
overrule the ref.

buildup of the goal, a french player is pushed down in the box when
trying to jump for the ball:

In high def it is almost certain there is contact on Anelka's right foot
that is caught in Given's scissor motion (foot trips on Given's left leg
while the heel is pushed forward by Given's right leg). The question is
whether Given also tries to grab his left foot but another angle is needed
to be reasonably sure.

I agree it looks like Given's left leg slightly tripped Anelka, but I
don't know, it really doesn't seem enough to bring him down by itself.
Maybe in high def it's more apparent. As for Given's right leg making
contact, that's impossible to say on this video I think, no matter
what definition. You'd need a view from above to be able to tell. And
even then you might need precision measurement.
So I don't know, I still find it not conclusive enough.
What do you think of the french player pushed down in the box before
Gallas' goal ? That one seems clearer to me.

It's possible to see the foot extended by the leg scissor when Given's right
leg makes contact with Anelka's right heel.

more camera angles are needed which would also allow to see what Given does
with his left hand (seems to grab Anelka left foot). Measurements aren't
needed when body parts move in a way that is consistent with the timing of
forces (like the extension of the foot mentioned above)

There were several incidents like that in the Irish box. I pointed out the
very obvious one at 19:57 on Squillaci but I haven't looked at the one you
mention in detail.

FWIW I eventually loaded the clip in a video editor last night in order to
zoom in and slow down the action. I have now little doubt remaining that
Given grabbed Anelka's left ankle with his right hand since it is easily
visible in the camera view looking at Given's back. The reach can be seen as
well as the glove wrapped around the leg, and Anelka's foot rotating left
almost 90 degres as it happens.
