Palmeiras stumble, but take provisional lead. Sport get unexpected
result, but are relegated.

Palmeiras 2-2 Sport Recife
[Deyvid Sacconi 73', Danilo 85' - Arce 12', Wilson 16']
A nice exchange of passes set Dutra for a perfect low cross
to Arce, who tapped in a surprising opener. Wilson added an
even more surprising second with a nicely placed shot from
just outside the box. Magrão was playing a sensational
match to stop a desperate pressure by the hosts, but was
finally beaten when Ortigoza did a nice turn over the ball
surrounded by three defenders and found substitute Deyvid
Sacconi with a nice through pass. By that time Sport were
already one man down, since Durval got a second yellow for
pulling Ortigoza by his arms to stop a counterattack. Big
controversy ensued from Palmeiras' equalizer, as albeit the
play was perfectly legal, the referee had blown the whistle
before Danilo's turn and shoot, probably expecting that the
linesman would call an offside that never happened. You're
now invited to come up with Sesame Street jokes, since
the name of the referee is ELMO.

The play was legal, but SporTV won't let that get in their way. I came
home earlier before a meeting, and caught a good part of the
Switzerland-Colombia U17 WC semifinal. During half time, I was
surprised at how many times they replayed the goal, and at the outrage
in their speech.

Granted, it was a bizarre mistake, but what is this fuss all about?
Sport complain that their defenders stopped when they heard the
whistle. They might have been somewhat screwed in that sense, but it
would be an even bigger of a screw-up if a legit goal was waved off.

Now there's talk of annulling the game. Good idea. We all remember how
well that worked back in 2005. While we are at that, let me suggest
that all matches decided by a referee mistake this season are annulled
too. It makes no sense to stop just at this one, right?

I don't believe anything will happen. The field result will stand.
But, in the unlikely event that the game gets annulled, here's what
happens next: Palmeiras win the replay *and* the League. Everyone who
claimed for a replay will then be convinced that the match annulment
was part of a big Palmeiras conspiracy from the beginning.

All these refereeing mistakes suck, and take a lot away from my
football enjoyment. But this time a legit goal counted, for crying out
loud. If only all referee mistakes ended up like that, with a correct
call.

Abraço,

Luiz Mello
