BERLIN -Canadian world champion Jeremy Wotherspoon has been taken to
hospital after a crash at the season-opening speedskating World Cup
meet.

Wotherspoon, from Red Deer, Alta., fell as he was entering the last
corner and suffered a broken upper left arm in the 500-metre race on
Saturday, according to Speed Skating Canada.

He was carried off the ice on a stretcher.

"What happened to Jeremy is regrettable," said Michael Crowe, the
men's sprint team coach. "This injury will keep him away from
competitions for weeks to come. At the very least there should be no
need for surgery."

Crowe is confident that Wotherspoon didn't commit any technical
mistake at the turn, and says that ice conditions and the facilities'
age had a role in the gravity of the injury.

Wotherspoon, who won a dozen World Cup medals last year, including
eight gold, took the entire 2006-07 season off.
