You know what I find ironic in all this? That people want Tara to skate to
something more mature and serious not some cheezy song but people want Michelle
to skate to Cheezy songs that are less serious and more imature! The truth is
that skaters can do anything but fans wil never be content. Sigh!
I like Michelle's choices in music (or maybe it's Lori Nichol's choices) - we
apparently both like "moody" music.

I think you've nailed it.

"?" I thought it was to spend time with her dad and her dogs. ;^)

While there is some boring classical music, most people skate to "interesting"
or "appealing" classical music when they skate to classical music. If they
found it "boring," they wouldn't be inclined to practice the program or give it
their all. That some people might have more sophisticated musical tastes than
you does not make the music they choose "boring" - just beyond your ken.
>if she dosent' want to.
Nobody I saw was pushing Tara to skate to any kind of classical music. They
just want her to use interesting, non-shallow music, to skate a program worthy
of her talent. What the heck is wrong with wishing she push herself
artistically, rather than lose her edge and just settle for something popular
and cheesy?
>And isnt' this her exhibition program only!
In the "pro" ranks, your "exhibition"-style program *is* what you use to
compete.
>You know what I find ironic in all this?
I'd love to know...
>That people want Tara to skate to something more mature and

"interesting" and worth her time and effort...

right...
> but people want Michelle to skate to Cheezy songs
1) not the same people
2) the only people who want Michelle to skate to cheesy music don't like her;
no skating fan *wants* to see a skater use cheesy music unless it's a comedy
bit.
> that are less serious and more imature!
Yes, people have expressed a sincere interest in seeing MK be less serious, but
*never* have I seen someone who likes MK want her to skate down to an immature
level. Projecting your own attitude on others, perhaps?
> The truth is that skaters can do anything
You got that right...
> but fans wil never be content.
And you got that right as well, but IMO not for the reason you think. You're
right because I can never get enough new and interesting skating programs, so
I'm never going to be content with old and uninteresting programs. Some skaters
deliver better than others in that regard, and they stand a better chance of
same if they avoid the cheese. And that, I think, is the crux of the kvetching
about what appears, on paper, to be an extremely shallow music choice by Ms.
Lipinski.

IMO, she does. Now, how about all the other skaters on the planet, upon whom
you're not fixated? Why do you always make this a Tara-Michelle duel?

Wrong, Richard. (Good to see you answering from your established persona, by
the way.) But what you don't know about me would fill many books.
>Classical music is NOT more sophisticated than pop music.
Oh, Richard, how can you opine that? LOL!
> I've played some collections of pop music on my trombone and I

Well, of course you do. Pop music "collections" are arranged for band
instruments, which are written by band enthusiasts who write interesting
trombone parts. Classical compositions, broadly speaking, use brass for color
and harmonic support, not usually for the lead. You'll get nice bass lines and
a few counter-tunes, throughout musical history, until Impressionism, where
you'll get to play a note in a big slab of sound/chords for color. Big whoop.
No wonder you feel the way you do, though - your instrument skews your
perspective.
>There are simply snobs who think Classical music is superior.
Perhaps. But there are educated musicians who have studied all kinds of music
and recognize sophisticated construction when they see it. It's not opinion,
it's fact. And note, Richard, that not all Classical music is sophisticated,
nor is all pop music unsophisticated, but this Genie music certainly is un.
>Classical compositions are generally straight forward.
Not on my planet. That's what makes them so interesting after centuries or only
weeks of life. ("Classical" is a term that embraces a lot of genres and time
ranges here, not the general term that falls between Baroque and Romantic in
the timeline.)
>There is a lot of subtletly and sophistication in the melodies of many

Again, Richard, you assume things about me that are wrong. I'm well aware of
the wonders of some (you said "many") pop music. Now... which skaters have
skated to this wonderful pop music with the fabulous 'bone parts? Huh?
> and tried playing both pop and classical.
Oh, Richard, you ought to try keeping up with me when I improvise jazz. We
could make beautiful music together. ;^) Again, you're assuming too little.

Duh. But you'll notice I said in the quoted line "interesting, non-shallow
music" - which does not preclude popular music of any ilk, so long as it's
interesting and not shallow, of course. I know you can keep up with me,
Richard. Don't put words in my hands.
>>That people want Tara to skate to something more mature and

>You mean more snobbish and pretentious.
No, I mean mature and serious. If I'd've *meant* "snobbish and pretentious", I
would have said "snobbish and pretentious." But I didn't, so that's not what I
meant. :^)
> Screw that.
You first.
> I like seeing her skate to pop music. It's more fun.
Fine. Just let it be *good* pop music. :^)
> Let Kwan be the phoney baloney drama queen.
Again, Richard, why pick on MK? What about all the other skaters who you don't
watch in freeze frame?
>> not some cheezy song

I think you have no clue what "cheese" is.
>Like I said, don't go by what the people say on newsgroups. In the

A lot of people like Kool-aid, too, but that doesn't make it a sophisticated
drink.
>Newgroups are full of snobs who hate whatever is popular.
First, that's an absurd generalization. Second, since you frequent this NG, you
just intimated that you are a snob who hates whatever's popular. Third... good
music *can* be popular, and people who like good music would then be liking
popular music. Why do you seem to think serious = classical? All classical
music is not serious. And serious, interesting music doesn't have to be
classical.
BTW, fabulous discussion, Rich.
When I wrote the comment about how people wanted these skaters to skate to
different music I in no moment meant it to be a Tara vs. Michelle thing. I
was merely stating that fans will never be content. I know you probably were
not refereing to me but I just wanted to clear that up. :)
This comment, unattributed, looks to be a quote directly from my post *to*
Richard, the Tara/Michelleaholic. ;^) It was an actual dialog, which is rare
and exciting enough in itself.... but he hasn't replied yet. <sigh>
