What about when the pitch is baked hard? You should know about that, and
I've done a few laps of school sports fields in the summer, not good for
rugby at all.
Don't forget, he lives in a place where summer rugby is a viable option,
late kick offs, pitch sprinklers for the odd weekend when there hasn't
been enough rain, easy to do. But in the south of England as well?
Really not sure.
Next time I see him out jogging I'll go and ask him wtf he's on about.....

Let the grass grow and water it.

I've played on some really baked hard pitches and it's not as big a problem
as you would expect it to be. Increasingly you can see 7s being played in
parks during the summer here. No baked pitch compares to some of the 'all
weather' pitches in France. Why anybody would think it's a good idea to get
a load of gravel, cover it in sand, plant grass on it and play rugby there I
don't know. I've still got the scars.

See further down in the blog:

"Logic tells me that it would be a split season with a month off in the
summer, July, and two off in the winter, December and January. Or is a nine
month season too long?"

That's pretty much what they do in Switzerland, and as we all know they are
rugby gods.

A 'two peak' season would suit the training schedule better. Club in
winter and internationals in Summer, I could go with that. Tough on the
traditional 6N, but if there's money and better results in it, who
cares....? Could always play the 'A' 6N in the winter anyway.

In fact thinking about it, playing internationals and possibly the HC in
the summer could be better because they'd have the resources to water
the pitch etc, hmmmm.

That's true, but there is plenty of money flowing into NH rugby at the
moment, perhaps some genius would think to, I don't know, water the
pitches?

Whenever this topic comes up, the impression I get is those who oppose
it are looking for reasons. I suppose there is a sentimental aspect to
it.

My take on the matter is *abosultely* move rugby to a summer game. It
works on all the right levels. Use Richard's advice: Screw it, let's
do it.

Yeah sure, we'll just tell all those small clubs to install sprinklers
on the pitch they rent every other sunday. Sorted.....

Just get some barrels to catch the rainwater and a trailer. Get a length of
hose with a number of holes in it, block the end up and lay it along the
back of the trailer. Drive up and down the pitch. Simples.

Where in Britain would pitches get baked hard in summer? Not based on
the 2007-2009 summers.

Remember the "Barbecue summer" of 2009...?

It does happen. In fact in the south it usually happens. And if we're to
believe the predictions for global warming {currently -11 here....}
Southern British summers will get hotter from here on.

Yeah, seems last summer was possibly the last time we'll see el nino:
it's unlikely to have an effect now due to rising global temperatures.

All I know is it's bloody cold here at the moment....

Feeling really annoyed so I think I'll go and mow the lawns before the day

I have always wanted a converged NH and SH season. It could remove
these crazy end of season tours (both directions) when either a
knackered or understrength side tours.
Clearly in the SH we cannot play in summer so we can almost share a
common season.
Makes international slots easier and we can probably shorten the
season (although the commercial types wont like that)

I have played the odd game when I have considered it cold.
In Durban (school, university and first 7 years of work) 12 degrees C
was the considered the end of the world.
In the army we once played a game when it was 5 degrees C.

How you guys do it is beyond me.
Tough, stupid or both.

We did it, but it wasnt a joy. We did it at school and uni cos we had little
choice. Much later whilst playing in a veteran team, you just didnt turn up
to training if it was too cold. That said, at the time I was living in the
south of France, so the cold spells didnt last long. Now I'm living in the
middle of France, there is snow on the ground, the temperature hasnt been
positive for about 10 days and wont be for at least 5 more. you couldnt get
me out to play or watch rugby anywhere other than in front of my tv.
Playing in cold weather sucks, and the fact that we may played on half
frozen pitches (and we did) when we where younger doesnt change anything.

At least the outside backs would look for work which is unusual for

Just watched the Leicester v Wasps game today (the only one thats gone ahead
as a result of the weather).
Enjoyed it on SKY sports and was glad it did go ahead, but there is no way
you'd catch me going numb from freezing in the stands. Contrast that to
seeing several Super League games live all because of the weather.

Im actually happy that rugby happens all year round between the two codes!
But yeah for the sake of RU, I think a summer switch would benefit
massively.

Reminds me of the June Test in 2008 between the All Blacks and
Ireland:

Conditions at Westpac were unusually bitter for the match. "I don't
know if I've played in much colder than that," said Irish captain
Brian O'Driscoll, and similar thoughts were echoed from All Black
counterpart Richie McCaw. "It's probably the coldest game I've ever
played in. I've never got cold out on the field but after half-time I
was shivering. It was nasty."

New Zealand centre Conrad Smith commented that "There was one point
there are the end when one of the Irishmen went down that both teams
were running around in circles doing their own thing (to keep warm). I
just looked around and thought 'this is stupid'."
