Here's another Olympic spin from the Australian media and
parliamentarians over the issue that Australians allegedly never
mention (and another nice example of Aussies welching over bets):

http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/pure-gold-aussies-beat-brits-in-individual-medal-count/2008/08/26/1219516458956.html

Pure gold: Aussies beat Brits in individual medal count

Federal Sports Minister Kate Ellis reckons Australia did beat arch
rivals Great Britain at the Beijing Olympics - on one indicator at
least.

Team GB may have won more more gold medals - 19 to Australia's

14 - but Australia walked away with more individual medallists, Ms
Ellis told parliament today.

"We had 136 individual medallists in the team of 435. Incidentally,
Great Britain, in order for comparison, had 74 individual medallists,"
she said during Question Time.

"(This) I think again illustrates just what a truly amazing
performance Australia put in."

The British haven't been backward in gloating about their superior
medal count.

Ms Ellis, who made headlines when she challenged British Sports
Minister Gerry Sutcliffe to a bet that Australia would do better on
the medal tally, will now have to wear a Team Great Britain t-shirt at
a major sporting event in Australia.

And British tabloid newspaper, The Sun, this week paraded billboards
around London and Sydney gloating about Britain's gold medal success
over Australia.

Emblazoned across an image of a massive red, white and blue Union flag
were the words: "Where the bloody hell were you?" and the gold medal
tallies for the sporting rivals.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who along with Opposition Leader Brendan
Nelson, greeted the Australian team on their return at Sydney Airport
this morning, promised Australia would win more medals at the London
games in 2012.

"Can I say this to our friends in Britain," Mr Rudd told parliament
this afternoon.

"We wish them well for the 2012 Olympics and I'm sure they're going to
do a fantastic job in hosting those Olympics.

"If I know anything about the Australian competitive spirit, and if I
know anything about the Australian Olympic Committee, our lot will be
there with spades on, ready to take it up to the Brits in the best of
Australian traditions come 2012."

He congratulated the Australian athletes on their achievements in
Beijing.

Dr Nelson highlighted the efforts of triple gold medallist Stephanie
Rice and pole vaulting Olympic champion Steve Hooker, among others.

"We were the sixth highest in terms of medal tally at 47 medals
(Australia actually won 46) but we were first when it came to the
inspiration of a nation," he told parliament.

Australia's funding for elite sport came into question after Britain's
medal-winning Olympics was linked to a major funding boost for sport.

But Ms Ellis, who was baited by opposition MPs on the sports funding
issue during question time, would only say that Australia would
"maintain" its support.

Earlier today, Mr Rudd told the Nine Network he would look at the
merits of introducing a national sports lottery to raise more money
for Australian sport.

Kate Ellis is not only our Sports Minister, but also holds the Youth
portfolio. She is a 29 year old political science graduate, whose partner is
a trade union official. She has 2/10ths of fuck all experience at anything,
so she's perfectly qualified, as far as our esteemed, Chinese 'lap dog'
Prime Minister is concerned, to manage the destiny of our sporting
programmes.

Ah, the old 'I was misquoted' excuse, always good for a laugh.

Seeing as parliamentary stuff gets reported in Hansard, I'd suggest
that this is excuse is even lamer than usual.

Anyway, what was it that she did or didn't say that you reckon puts a
different spin on it?

direct Govt grants at $A16.7mill (no mention of how much the silver

Kenny, anyone who had spent time in Manchester, Leeds or Liverpool would

The SMH is a leftist, feminist, PC, socialist bugle....they'll push an anti
sport angle without much provocation..........

If your going to post bullshit you might at least try and shroud it with
some believable numbers. You quote '$16.7mill per gold medal' and then apply
an 'indirect gov't grants' formula to then come up with $100mill per
gold....excellent work, really like to know how you fashioned that balance
of $83mill per gold.

Do yourself a favour, have a browse through this :-

$42mill total is a long way off your rubbery numbers. By all means I
acknowledge there have been corporate contributions, understanding employers
and a host of breakfast cereal companies. $1bill ? I think not.

By the by I think the Brits did really well and I congratulate themn for an
outstanding effort. Major difference appears to be your cyclists had better

So you're saying the SMH is an unreliable souce?

I thought you said I was lying?

Simple, really.
I'm surprised you didn't spot it yourself, given that you've quoted
the first part already:

"Reports yesterday suggest the real cost of a gold medal through
direct federal grants could be up to $16.7 million.
The sports academic James Connor said even that figure may be an
underestimate once other government funding is added and the real
price could be "up to $100 million" ."

So, if it is $100mill, you times it by the number of golds won and
(here's the hard bit) $100mill x 14 = $1.4bill

Hmmm, interesting report, though hardly unbiased. This John Coates
guy. Is he the same John Coates who made all the disparaging remarks
about GB that kicked all the fuss off?

But I'm wondering how they've managed to work out the cost per gold
medal in 2008 from a report published in 2007.
Looks to me more like prediction than fact.

Yeah, but I assume your cycling chemists will simply talk more closely
with your swimming chemists between now and 2012.

Indeed it doesn't.
Given that team GB is 3rd on the all-time list of medal winners for
the summer Olympics, I think we can safely assume that the Australian
swallow has been and gone.

Perhaps it's gone to Georgia.

Those 136 individual medallists no doubt include all members of medal
winning teams. I think the Aussies sent more teams to the games than
the Poms did.

A link to a document from the body responsible for spending
Australia's Olympic dollars.
That they put forward the idea that they spend the taxpayers money
wisely and thriftily and give great value for money is really no
surprise.
Hey, Olympic medals cost the Australian taxpayer very little, about 8c
a day!
Think how many more medals Australia would win if you gave us even
more money!
They are hardly in the business of telling us the true cost of Olympic
medals, and it's quite embarrasing when some paper speculates that the
true cost, taking into account indirect expenditure, may totally dwarf
their estimates.

Estimates, by the way, that were provided in 2007, at least a year
before the Beijing Games were held.
You always get suckers taken in by that sort of spin.

Not really.
It's fairly common knowledge that Australia spends up big on the
Olympics.

You found a link to a source that was saying that Australia doesn't
actually spend as much as everyone thinks, so you seized it like an
Australian cyclist with a syringe.

Not really, in fact I'm not overly fussed about people who make the
odd mistake (I usually only comment when twerps like Alvey, who makes
enough himself, attempts to ridicule someone else who makes one).

Chuckwit makes so many spelling and grammar howlers that it's not
really worthy of a reply, except when they are funny, but what is
funny is when a softcock like you makes one and even Chukky picks up
on it.

Kenny, there's no air left in the balloon mate, the ref's called the fight
off, it was a TKO eight posts ago. The 'war of attrition' routine was put in
the cupboard after your mate Haig's less than spectacular application of
it........
