To my friends in the rowing scene in Christchurch.

I understand that the quake has done quite extensive damage to the
older rowing club buildings. I hope not too much damage was done to
the boats and oars, so that people can still find a way to row.

Sadly, though, I've heard that Avon and Union may need to be
demolished.

If there is any silver lining, it's that the quake happened at 4:35
AM, and not PM, when the place us often crowded with rowers.

Best wishes to you all with my hopes for speedy recovery from the
damages.

Walter,

Rebecca and Grant are in Dunedin. On the map it looks like Dunedin
would be too far from Christchurch to have felt any effects from the
earthquake. I am assuming they are ok. I have been thinking about them
since I first heard of the earthquake this morning.

It has gotten to be such a small world.

Cordially,

Charles

I have a friend in Nelson who was jolted awake. Farther still, but
felt. I think most of the damage was limited to the immediate Chch
area because it was so shallow, but there are reports of a 3.5 meter
wide fault newly opened...
Wow.
I've heard that the boat sheds at Kerrs Reach have had a very rough
time of it, but also that nobody in Christchurch and surrounds was
killed by the quake.

If you go on to NZ Rowing pages, there are pictures up there.
