I'm soliciting opinions from the group on Filippi rowing shells,
particularly the eights. They've been recommended to me, I'd like
to hear from people who use them, this is for a heavyweight college
men's crew, rowing on salt water.

Durable? Components good? riggability?

Email or post ok, thanks

We own a 8+ fillipi in our club. However, I have rowed also in an
empacher 8+.
From my experience I found the empacher more stable and rigid compared
to the fillipi. The boat sounds better and is quite robust in
turbulent waters.
It terms of speed I cannot say much as we did not compete in the
empacher.
I do recommend smaller fillipi boats such as skiffs. They are
extremely comfortable boats to row in.

FWIW they're currently the "big boat" used by Rowing NZ...
Most training on fresh water.
don't require a lot of re-rigging.

We have Filippi only, and of course we have an eight. All of these
boats proved to be durable and we row on salt water, and often with
waves. The most recent of them has ten years, others have from twelve
to over twenty. We wash the boat with fresh water after each outing.
The only weak part of the boats are shoes, salt destroys them and do
not last long with crews that have little care fo them, this is why
our old coach only wanted "clogs" footstretchers. I not not get salt
water on shoes on my single, but only when it happens I wash the shoes
with fresh water and they are lasting almost 10 years, almost perfect.

I can give you a more complete description and suggestion about
Filippi 8+s if you want but in few words they are really good.
You can pick from different shape and models. There basically 2 main
shapes (and I think he made some variation on those too). One that is
the old Veb shape and that is my favorite. I think that according to
unskilled rowers it's hard to set (although I never had that feeling)
and then there is the Empacher clone shape. I am not a big fan of
that I think it was more of a commercial move since when it came out
with that Empacher was the "winning boat". At BU I personally tested
both and what we called "the short stern boat" came out on top every
time and we decided to use that for races despite we had a much newer
one available.
Stiffness wise I didn't see any significant difference between Filippi
and Empacher in any of the boat that I tested. I can actually tell
you that Empacher craftsmanship in the past few years went down. It
seems that to have a good boat from them you need to be a finalist at
the Olympics. All the singles that I bought in the past few years had
construction defects. It was a big disappointment since I am one of
those people that grow up with the dream of owning an Empacher.
The main issue that i had with Filippi is that their boats seems not
to fit women. Bow seats are really narrow and the hips can't get
through the ribs.
This is my experience.
I hope it helps
Ciao,
Marco

I must add that my unisuit gets weared at sides in my single and I had
to use a seat pad to lift me up a bit in a double and pair, even if
this is happened in two boats only and I have no expererience with
several boats, I'm going on for ages with the same.
