I am going to be in Europe for a year, and would like to take
advantage of the opportunity to have new racing experiences.

Any suggestions on classic European regattas to enter? I have a
preference for head races. (and suggestions on how to rent/borrow a
single if my club isn't entering the race)

I could recommend the Skiffhead, a head race over 7.5km on the river
Amstel in Amsterdam. It is held in spring, a Sunday near Easter.

HRR is a must :)

there are some amazing mass start regattas too, don't you like them?

Try the Silver Skiff in Turin, the Scullers Head of the River, in
London and the Armarda Cup in Switzerland
May be hard to co-ordinate dates - but most regatta organisers are
helpful about introducing you to places to borrow / rent boats.

Thanks for the help. I will try to do these.

Any other thoughts? Or just water I should row on or clubs I should
visit??

If you happen to be in Florence, the local rowing club "Canottieri
Firenze" is just under the "Uffizi", very hospital and with a nice
restaurant too.

It's not a race, but theVoga Longa is worth experiencing. You start
and finish in front of St Mark's Square in Venice and paddle about 30k
round the lagoon, past Burano and through Murano (or vice versa; I
forget).
The only criterion for boats is that you must have at least one member
facing forwards (because there are usually around 1500 boats of all
types setting off at roughly the same time), so a 1x is out I'm
afraid.

Have a look at www.atlanticcharters.co.uk - They run 2 Pronavia 38's
out of Gibraltar and have fantastic access to some Great European
Regattas around Spain and even Morocco. Some offshore and some round
the cans racing.
